New rear shoes - new noise!

Hi all,

just had both rear tyres replaced yesterday (1st time for my Z) and now I have a 'metallic clanking' noise when driving over bumpy roads (pot holes, lowered man-holes cover, etc - not usually intentionally!)

The sound is coming from drivers side rear quarter, possbilly from close to petrol tank filler/hood stowage area, maybe underside of car - not certain atm.

Had the car back to tyre fitter for visual inspection on ramp tonight and nothing obvious found, not even evidence of yesterday's incident (point 1 below).

Points to note when tyres were replaced.

1. Tyre fitter attempted to drive car (slowly) onto the ramp/lift until binding sound told him he'd bottomed it on a metal beam on the ramp - I'm not too impressed with this as I'd asked if he had enough clearance beforehand but he had a mate checking from behind as he reversed and still managed to catch it! The noise didn't sound too painful and the visual inspection after more carefully getting the car on the ramp showed no apparent damage.
2. After failing to get the car onto the ramp, he used a trolly jack, doing one side then the other.
3. Without thinking, I'd left the roof down for the entire operation.

So, looking for any pointers as to what this annoying sound might be!

Thanks for any help that you might be able to offer.

Cheers,

Andy

sounds like it could be your rear spring snapped...

mine sounded like a spanner knocking against the bodywork...

rear spring - maybe a good call from what I've read on this board, but is this really likely after only 17500 miles (4 years old in July)?

booked in for a check at local dealer tomorrow.

Woman on service desk claimed that she had never heard of this problem before, but said that BMW may part-fund repair. We will see....

What's the likely price for dealer replacement of a pair of rear springs?

I'm always wary that if a specific dealer doesn't know about 'common' issues, then they're not likely to have worked on many of your model, so I'd take it elsewhere.

I was told they would pay part & "my contribution" would be £170 for both rear springs on my M

Well, disappointed to find that both rear springs had failed at only 17500 miles, but very pleased when Dealer replaced both today for only £117 with BMW/Dealer contributions. :)

Thanks for the feedback guys.
