Good morning.

I’ve just registered as a potential owner seeking information, hints and tips from existing owners, to help me consider my options and hopefully get into my first Z4.

If I do this it will almost certainly be an E85 3 litre. My quandary at the moment is whether to make it my daily driver, or keep my current snotter for commuting duties and save the Z for weekends and holidays.

I look forward to getting stuck in to reading much of the information on offer within the forums and hopefully landing myself a fine example sometime in the coming months.

 Pete

Welcome to the forum Peter

I’m quite new myself and this is definitely the right place for information and advice!
I use my own only at weekends and holidays: too thirsty for a regular commute and a waste in bumper to bumper traffic.

Good luck with your search for your own Z4 and don’t forget to post pictures when you find it :)

Hi, you've found a good place to start looking - 3.0 roadster just what I went for

Its well worth having a look at the cars forum members are selling - Number 5 (Bristol area) has a 3.0si roadster for sale at the moment. This is also the place to ask questions and post details of cars you've seen if you want a second opinion.

welcome aboard, just up the road from Exeter.
lots of advise on here, check out number5 3.0si before I do.

Welcome, I run my 2.5 roadster as a weekend car. I run a Honda Accord as a daily and occaisionally bring the zed to work. I'm lucky to have found a particularly nice one so I'm not keen on picking up road rash and parking dings. That said it's comfy and not too bad on fuel if you want to get one and just use it and enjoy it.
What ever you choose to do, enjoy your new car and get some photos up when you get one

Hi and welcome

Be sure to check out the for sale thread here. Forum cars are obviously well loved and generally well maintained :D.

Hi & Welcome
Now's a good time to buy, before the summer rush for convertibles starts, so hopefully you will get a good deal

Thanks for the welcome messages. I have a bit more saving and some money shuffling to do before I'm ready to buy. Having said that Number 5's car in Bristol does look like a cracker.

whatever you buy, post lots of pictures, especially interior coz we needs to know what the inciderrrrs like

I run mine day to day - I work in sales so do a fair bit of driving! The Z is perfect for it, although after a few hours the back starts to hurt but that's the same in any car for me!
They aren't special enough cars to worry about keeping in a bubble for the weekend, just enjoy it every day imo!

Welcome to the board Pete. :) I'm in the keep the snotter and have the Zed for the weekends camp. Enjoy the hunt.

Mine is my daily for exactly the reason cremeegg states. Its only £4k worth of car, I enjoy driving it too much to have an old clunker as my daily. It's not like its a 250 GTO.

Hi and welcome to the forum - loads of useful information (and conflicting opinions) on here!

My Z4 is a weekends/highdays/holidays toy - but primarily because my elderly mother can't get in and out of it!

So I've got an E91 325i for daily duties.

I'm sure Number 5's will be a good example - he is one of the "hands-on" Forum members who revives and relocates roof motors. So even if you don't buy his car you might want to pay him a visit!

Good luck finding one you like.

Welcome to a new new Somerset member, I'm in the Burnham-on-Sea area so just up the road

The daily Vs weekender question is really down to the mileage you do and whether you occasionally need to carry more people or ferry stuff about? Mine is a third car bought 10 years ago and only do a few thousand miles a year and has been very enjoyable and financially painless. But if you use it as an average-mileage daily drive you have to be realistic and realise that any car of this age is going to require regular replacements and repairs and budget accordingly. If you have the facilities and are handy then most of the regular stuff on the M54 pre-facelift 3.0 is not bad for DIY, but can become eye watering at garage rates and this will be the biggest financial factor. Call one of the local indi BMW places around Taunton for a general quote on servicing and common repairs like complete brake swap, suspension bushings, water pump or VANOS seals, on average you will be doing one at least one or two jobs like this per year at average mileages.

No5's car is tempting and at the least a good one to view and compare with, if you see any cars of interest post it up, I'm sure people will offer an opinion :)

Welcome Peter

Mine was a daily driver for the last two years and whilst it could handle being a daily, I felt it lost its special feel. I now have it as a weekend car and I must say after driving the van all week getting back in the Zed feels very special. Mine is a 3 litre too and feels really fast after the van. I know this probably won’t help your decision, but for me the feeling when you only use it say at weekends does make it feel really special

The more I think about it the more I believe a Z would be better as a weekend car for me. I do 20 miles each way each day to work, but half of that is on fairly poor quality minor country roads. Lots of mud when it’s wet and narrow in places, so hedge scratches down the near side. Added to that I do need to use my car for work sometimes, which also means some mucky minor roads and leaving it parked in remote parts of the countryside at times.

I’m reckoning on spending up to £6k. For me that is a lot of money, so I would like to look after it. I know they’re made to be driven and it will be, but I would feel better about it if that was on dry, decent quality roads and with the soul purpose of enjoyment, rather than the daily grind. Mind made up I think!
