You're a bit confused. What's happened is that you'll now be able to stream/download the movies you buy from Apple on any iDevices, rather than having to store the file. They did the same with music and tv shows when iOS5 rolled out. It doesn't count towards the storage space used in your iCloud account.
 
I though it was wrong when I tried to save my movies to the cloud....although my business manager told me at the store you can def upload films to the cloud but will need to buy my cloud space.

I have a problem then. I have 18 films on my iPad, my PowerBook is full, how can I ensure then that my films make it to the new iPad when I get it next week?

My PowerBook won't let me save anything of that size, almost 40GB to it.....it's 5 years old, not doesn't have a huge memory.....any thoughts?

You get a 5gb iCloud allowance free. If you want more, then you buy more space - say an extra 50gb for £70/year.

Alternatively you could get external storage for your iPad, such as the HyperDrive which is about £200 for a 500gb unit, or an AirStash which is usable on more than just the iPad, or a Seagate GoFlex Satellite (which is what I'll probably go for).

The final option is to buy the 64gb version of the iPad, so you'll have about 60gb of free space to play with.

My biggest problem with iCloud (or any cloud service) is that it would take me months to upload 500gb or music/video/docs at 2mbps (it'd take a couple of weeks to download it at 20mbps), and I'd have to pay hundreds just to store it.

If they're movies from iTunes, they will be added to your "purchased" tab on all your iDevices and you'll be able to download them again at your leisure.

For the big files you have that isn't from iTunes, I recommend a personal cloud solution. I've got a 100GB drive attached to the new via my ISP that I can access remotely, but I've also got an AirStash that is like a portable cloud that hold 64GB on a SD flash that I can access via wi-fi on my iPad, effectively doubling it capacity. It's about the size of an iPod Nano, weighs next to nothing.
 
I can't see how the iPad would be of use to me. I use my MacBook pro for most of what I need a computer for at home and when on the move my iPhone 4. For video and photo editing and few other things I also have an iMac.
 
WLH - how bout when your on a plane and want something to do... oh wait I have an ipad full of movies, music, and entertaining apps. Pulling the laptop out on the plane is not so easy... at least not with a 17" screen.

also ipad is great when sitting on the lounge watching tv. so light and convenient to use. try one, I bet you'll convert...

Im a bit of a tech geek, build my own computers etc but I dont even use laptop anymore, been converted to apple even though 2 years ago I thought they were some hyped up craze!

5D MKII doesn't work with iPhoto ;)! haha poor if you ask me. That screen is worth having, but as a mac nut and photographer and graphic designer I I'm still yet to find a need for one, especially as it is a glorified iPhone. It is definitely more an indulgence item rather than an obvious purchase. Nice to show work on but thats about it I find, bought my mum one perfect for her, for people that don't need to use more than simple documents web browsing and multimedia content its great.

More for the oldies haha! Sounds stupid but there so simple they work great for people who are not technologically minded my nana 77 has one she loves it, uses it for eBay find her antiques and using FaceTime to keep in touch with family its perfect.

When I say "use it" all I mean is the photographers have their portfolio on it and sling it in their camera bag, it's not like they process anything on it really. My Dad uses the camera kit with his 5DII so he can upload to flickr when he is abroad. As a portable picture frame it's quite nice with the new screen... probably not worth the cost but if you can justify it on other grounds then it's a pretty cool screen to have.

My laptop is the MacBook Pro 13 inch model which is great for surfing the web, e-mail and forums while watch TV in my Lazy Boy recliner. I know you can do that on the iPad but I also support/manage 3 web sites which I can't do on the iPad. That said, I will never say never as I have tried one since a number of my friend have them and likely some day in a moment of weakness....well one never knows.... :?

13" MBP is the way forward great to use out in the field too! :thumbsup: Have one myself with a Mac Pro to do the more heavy duty stuff.

O ye I know what you mean, I use an iPad 2 at the newspaper I work for to show clients proofs etc. Nice for them to handle and looks professional. When it comes to using using them in the field tho.. there not really very useable take ages to download from the camera, limited space and usability. But when they make them more of a 'laptop replacement' maybe add a decent wacom style pen to edit images on the fly with a version of lightroom would be incredible, a perfect photographers tool. Until then just have to wait and hope. For now the MBA or the MBP 13" is a much better option for a working pro although a little larger and heavier. Good for downtime tho or when your traveling editing on the fly, really hope they add the higher pixel density screens on the new MBP 13" like the MBA need a new lappy too! These items are going to take a tole on the Z haha!
 
A 13" (or 15") Air with a "retina" display would be the ticket... With Lightroom not even being on the Apple App store I doubt we'll see it on the IOS app store any time soon. Shame, it's be really quite cool.
 
Just picked up an iPad2 on a work trip to the US for £250. :thumbsup:

Star Wars Falcon Gunner app is causing hilarity in the office... ...it's Augmented Reality, you sit in a swivel chair and shoot down Tie Fighters from 360 degrees...! :D
 
Yup, queued up like a geek and have it....and the verdict? Not sure. Display doesn't feel that much different and I'm not sure that I really feel all the other features that good either. I'll see how I get on with it over the next few days .... I will keep you posted
 
Ok Siri is pretty good. Comparing it to using the keypad, and to the wireless kep pad, and using Siri is much easier. Just don't know how to punctuate with it yet.

I didn't really feel people will notice the display change. The 2 is a tad brighter I think. Is it quicker? Well side by side they are exactly the same, loading up pages etc....
 
I hate Siri... used it twice on the 4S and never again... most people spend a large part of their time either in public or in an office... do they really want to be shouting commands at their phone... I doubt it. We have one guy in our office who for medical reasons has to speak to his computer... imagine if the whole office was like that, it'd be a nightmare. Siri is really a gimmick, I;m pretty sure.

What I am more interested in is the new haptic technology that changes the feel of parts of the display... that has quite a lot of possibilities (and no, not just interactive pron, before anyone suggests it!!)
 
Siri is fine, in the confines of your own office or home, you're right. And it works surprisingly well. I can talk quicker then I can type. I'm still getting used to it and I still have my iPad 2. I want to see how I get on but first indication I don't think it's enough to be different to justify the extra outlay....

Probably because the limiting factor is the broadband connection, not the processor. In all 3 versions the processor will be kicking around wondering what to do with itself for half the time while the page is loading.

I'd not tried the text dictation etc on my android phone until Siri came out, and it made me wonder how good the android one was. It was pretty accurate but I got bored of it pretty quick. I kind of feel it's only useful because tablet & phone keyboards aren't very satisfying - which is why I think a keyboard dock would be an essential for me for an ipad, or a transformer prime if I was buying a droid. Ever since voice dialing has been around I can't say I've been walking around pretending to be Capt Picard barking commands at my communicator... I can see the tech lasting though - especially if we manage to move to completely integrated wireless homes and offices :- leave your phone anywhere in your house and from another room just speak an instruction, and speakers&mic in that room wifi or bluetooth it back to the phone. Then as you walk around the conversation or interaction follows you from room to room.
 
Just picked one up at my local comet. Black 32g wifi, £479 less 10% for buying Comet money through my work discount reward scheme. No drama, lots of stock.

Shame I'm not allowed to get my hands on it for real until my 40th on the 29th!! Will only then see how it compares to the wife's ipad1.

Defo heavier and defo slightly thicker.....you actually notice the extra weight if you're used to holding it one hand a lot of the time....or rested on my chest in bed....

Siri is the only overwhelming thing for me.....makes my life a lot easier using Pages on it...
 
The only thing I seem to consistently use siri for is to set myself reminders for things and to create lists. For example, I love being able to tell siri to "remind me I have a dentist appt in two weeks time"
