There's going to be a lot of competition in this space, I would expect prices to drop to closer to the £500 mark early next year.
Ye at that price its not going to be popular! It fits in with the Sony Nex 5N which is currently £480ish with the twin lens kit and cashback. The Nex 7 is more in the higher bracket and this doesnt fit there. That orice will be Canons RRP price so expect to see it drop very quickly especially as a higher end version is set to be announced soon.
Like I said you do pay more for newer tech. It is basically a 650D in a compact. I think after Christmas it will be a good price with a twin lens kit (18-55 and 22mm)

But its not a DSLR replacement...
Its for the time when you want a smaller form. Like I said earlier for the purists it will never be a replacement, a DSLR cannot be beaten for ergonomics in any photographic sector which is why it is the only form factor that has dominated for last 50 years. And until EVF (electronic view finders) get better the prism is here to stay.
But yes you could replace the 60D with it because it offers exactly the same functions except a rotating screen & slower FPS. it also takes the same lenses! So... you have the whole EOS series lenses to choose from.
Like discussed the whole point is that DSLRs are big and heavy and as a pro yes I take it everywhere but its not necessary all the time they're also rather in your face and conspicuous. So it would be nice to have a small camera that offers the same features and quality of a DSLR but in a small form factor hence the mirrorless.
For purists it will be a camera that compliments a DSLR, for amateurs I think they are better options than DSLR, unless you specifically need certain features or like a big weighty camera or like the way it feels. Like said DSLRs are the best (in this example) but where do you put it? Except over your shoulder all day.
I will buy one for this reason. It will never replace my DSLR but my DSLR is so big it would be nice to go to places where I want to blend in more or maybe just a family event and take something I can chuck in my bag. Or when traveling, I took my DSLR into Africa and it was a pain, heavy etc in the heat too. Add a few lenses and you have quite a thing to lug around in 40+ deg. If a small camera offers the same quality as a big DSLR then im all for it. TBH for traveling I like to just take a cam and a 35mm. Which is why they have brought this out with the 22mm it basically is a 35mm on the APC (35.1mm). As 35mm is as close to the field of view of your eye so it is a fav amongst pros. Which is why they have all brought out a prime of this length.
So yes and no, depends how much you value the extra features. If anything the EOS M PRO model will offer 10FPS I would say... and better conrol similar to the higher end Sony Nex 7 but the canon will be better as they generally are.
IMO you cant beat a mirrored camera but I would love one of these they come very close and would love to be able to choose between either for a shoot and not worry that the compacts quality couldn't cut it. The fact you can get the bokeh that you would get on a DSLR, on a camera that measure less than 4cm in depth is incredible.
Most compacts dont offer any DOF at all because of the size of the sensor. Everything is in focus which means that its hard to be more creative. They are great for landscape photography believe it or not. In fact some sharper than most low end DSLRs with the standard lens kit. But try and take a nice portrait and you get a pic with a large DOF even on smaller apertures. Like 2.8 on a compact probably gives about the same DOF as f5.6 on a APC DSLR which is absolutely rubbish! Most compacts dont have faster lenses than 2.8.
So ye im pretty excited to get one of these!

Excellent summary Tom. 
I mainly use (or only use) my SLR on holidays, and my mobile for nights out... did the inca trail with my DSLR + 2 lens, it weight more then all my clothes! And was a paint lug around.
As the adapter thing take the larger IS lens will prob cost as much as a new lens i'll prob hold off getting any more lens for my camera for a while!
