New boiler?

Pleased to see the Worcester Greenstar I have is ranked =11th on efficiency in the link posted, out of 3074 gas boilers listed.

My mum and dad bought a Ferroli boiler, i think they would advise you stay well clear of one of those! Loses pressure regularly - have to climb into attic to sort, inconsistant temp - tap runs hot then cool, back to hot to cold etc, and its stupidly noisy

One of my mates is a gas fitter / hot water specialist with his own business.

He will only fit Worcs or Valliant.

Ferroli

The cost of replacing the boiler was recovered in 3 years from the reduction in gas usage because its so much more efficient.
i

I've always treated those comments when used by the ad men with some sceptisism and its good to hear the results from somebody who has recorded the results of their own investment!

I've just fitted PV panels and I have kept a record of their output on a spreadsheet. :D

Worchester bosch for sure. We have a combi one and went for a bit more powerful than the plumber initially recommended. Also it is worth getting the more expensive control panel thing. The electric one with separate thermostat. It means you can set the temp to go up and down at different times even if someone (usually my wife) has manually whacked up the temp in the meantime. It will reset itself when the next time block comes along.

This means that the heating stays on all the time, but it automatically shifts the temperature up in the morning and evenings and then down during the day and at night at your preset times and temperatures. Much better than having the heating going off completely etc. So actually saves energy.

Boilers are no different to cars , some go wrong & some don't , some have a badge that requires you pay more for it
My son is a qualified plumber/gas installer & 3 years ago fitted one of these in our house http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Baxi-MAIN-24HE-Potterton-Condensing-Combi-Boiler-NEW-NR-/200418709815?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&hash=item2ea9e2d137&_uhb=1
Faultless so far with rapid hot water flow into kitchen/ bathrooms & central heating for 9 rads with ease

Had someone out today vaillant approved. Emailing price tomorrow morning. Says 10year guarantee

Worcester. I am a fan of the floor standing ones that incorporate a heat sink.

BG are supposed to be pricy.

Plumbers should not be trusted too much as they get incentives to sell. Holiday in the Bahamas if you fit over 100 boilers in a year kind of thing.

That's no different to any sales organisation that has incentives from suppliers. You'll get sold whatever the spiff of the day is.

We had a combi boiler fitted towards the end of last summer, and in addition to some alterations to the system (some new radiators, a good clean out, some re-routed better insulated piping etc. etc.) it's amazing the difference it has made to the house in terms of efficiency, and performance.

I believe ours is a Wiessmann, no problems so far... but then it's only been 7 months!

still got another couple quotes to get, going to try to get another 4 or 5

got 2 approved vaillant quotes coming soon,
2 approved worchester bosch quotes coming and british gas quoting.

Nope, they do offer ridiculous guarantees via their dealer network

but do you pay through the nose for extras

No. Ours was pretty much a swap and clean. That cost about 2.2k. That was 1k cheaper than BG. Although BG do have a funky online control system which enables you to turn the temp on/off/up/down, so you can piss SWMBO off from anywhere in the world. It was tempting. But not 1ks worth of tempting.

Have you a water tank or electric heated shower?

Reason I say that is we have a combi (4 bedrooms 2 reception rooms, 17 radiators), which replaced the previous boiler/tank set up and we have pressure issues constantly. Hot water is fine but the pressure will fall drastically if there is more than one tap demanding hot water. Not ideal, but we've learnt to live with it though I would say if you do have a hot water tank, do keep it.

I always get the impression that combi boilers are not suitable for larger properties or where there is demand for hot water from a number of sources.
