New Apple iPhone 4g?

I see on PH that the unlimited download plans (although capped pretty highly as they are) are a thing of the past now though:

Smart phones and iPhones been too successful...

Shouldn't affect me because I do any serious downloading to my HTC off my home wifi/broadband but will be a bit annoying for those who buy them to use as a main internet accessing device.

Cynically you could say no great surprise in the tactic - the network providers get you hooked on the mobile web then crank up the price once you can't bare to be without it

thing is most people dont use much over 500mb a month, 1 gig tops, so everyone huffing and puffing about it wont even be affected - its the top few % who wont be too happy. i dont use much but thats due to o2 being crap. ive decided to wait till the next gen of the iphone, selling my 3gs and getting an ipad and an htc desire - which over a 2 year period costs less. i break even as if i sold the ipad and desire after 2 years i think id get about what i would have paid to have an iphone 4 for 2 years, but i get 2 devices!! plus my calculations included an ipad data plan @ £15 a month for 10gb from 3 - so i can use as much as i want

the new iphone looks very good but i cant ignore what i can get for the money with other devices, but at least i can still use all my apps.

if youve never had an iphone or if camera/video was a killer for you the iphone 4 is a fantastic bit of kit. i dont really use phones for games, photo or video so the new iphone is overkill for me.

I used my Iphone 3g extensively over here and in the states. A few real data intensive apps (one that springs to mind was Qik). Looking at my bill (well for the states) I never really came close to a gig. I'm not worried here, for the smart phones that's quite a bit of data. like Klarky said (well paraphrasing) very few people will probably even reach 1gig much less surpass it. The best way to avoid it is use free wifi whenever possible.

As others have said, the Iphone 4 is great, but then so is the 3GS, and IMO if you don't plan on using everything the phone has to offer then go with the 3GS.
The video, folders, etc is nothing new. I was using 99% of the what the OS can do on my jailbroken 3G. The main new thing will be video calls & multitasking. I can't wait to see what companies like Qik & Skype will do with the front camera.
I'm hoping I'll be able to call my friend in california from the apple store and video call him. We will have to arrange a pickup time.

http://www.qik.com/cajunmgster for an example of what Qik looked like over various networks.

So I'm curious about how UK companies run things. With the UK supposedly following O2 and getting rid of unlimited data...

1) If I choose say 500MB limit and decide after the first month I need that max data limit (1GB?) can I get that changed easily or will they tell me I'm stuck in however long contract?

2) Oh what is that simplicity thing I saw on O2's price list as well?

All that said, O2 has already booted them out of my consideration as I'm borrowing a friends O2 phone and can't keep a signal in or even around my house outside.

Don't know about O2 but taking my Sky Broadband as an example, if you go over your allowance it just becomes the perfect excuse for your ISP to charge you more money. Sky bumped me up £5 a month to their next price plan because I'd exceeded the limit too many times.

Yeah I checked the overage charges, Yikes! I'll probably go ahead and order the largest data plan availiable as I do use Qik and everything else. I just really don't want another 100 dollarish mobile bill every month.

Somehow I figured that as big as mobile phones are over here, they would of been quicker on the uptake when it comes to new releases. Now I see that is not the case.

I believe so, if not it is dead easy to "convert" your SIM to a micro-sim :D

iPhone is on the AT&T network here in the states so I ordered one from them.

I would be happy to switch to Orange if they can get me one next week!

They say "at the moment we're planning to release on the 24th"
Which actually makes me wonder whether they will or not!

I was planning on getting it on a business tariff, until I noticed that they're actually more expensive than the personal ones, and are exactly the same without the unlimited texts!

Unless they (like some companies) don't charge the VAT to a VAT registered company, which would make it far more attractive! (I'm on flat rate VAT, so don't claim it back in the same way)

AT&T has temporarily suspended pre-orders of the iPhone 4, after system problems Tuesday with processing orders for Apple's new phone resulted in confusion, frustration and possible data breaches.

Those who visited AT&T's website Wednesday to pre-order the device were greeted with the stark message: "Pre-orders for iPhone temporarily suspended."

"iPhone 4 pre-order sales yesterday were 10 times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3G S last year," AT&T said in a statement. "Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24, we’re suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders we’ve already received."

The company said "the availability of additional inventory will determine if we can resume taking pre-orders."

Apple, in a rare public statement, said the company and AT&T took pre-orders for more than 600,000 iPhone 4's on Tuesday, the first day of pre-orders.

"It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions," Apple said.

"Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock."

Yesterday brought "unprecedented pre-order sales," AT&T said, with "more than 13 million visits to AT&T’s website where customers can check to see if they are eligible to upgrade to a new phone; that number is about three times higher than the previous record for eligibility upgrade checks in one day."

Apple's website for iPhone pre-orders Wednesday appeared to be up and running, despite a deluge on Tuesday and slowness in getting through to the site. Apple's site was accepting orders only for black models — and not the white iPhone — and is guaranteeing shipment by July 2.

That means the long lines that have typified iPhone releases since 2007, when it first came out, will likely happen June 24.

AT&T is the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the United States. The new phone, which includes video calling between iPhone 4 users, costs $299 for a 32-gigabyte model with a two-year AT&T contract, and $199 for a 16 GB model.

Troubles in meeting demand for the iPhone aren't new. But the latest apparent breach and other recent security foul-ups by AT&T could lead to identity theft — and have consequences for both companies. Customers have called for Apple to allow other carriers to serve the iPhone in the U.S., and the latest problems offer another argument.

Some customers who tried to buy an iPhone 4 on Tuesday said they were met with error messages on the company websites, and lines formed in stores as clerks tried to get orders into their systems.

It reads on the O2 site that the iPhone will be available to nuy on the 24th, it looks to me you cant pre-order, plus it sounds like you will have to wait to get the micro card with the phone to then activate it which can take 24 hours. My guess you wont have the new iPhone from onto working until saturday or monday!
