new alternator

I've been back of my road trip now for 3 weeks, just gone to the car and nothing, zero power.

New battery a matter of weeks ago, so it looks like altinator as gone (as expected).

So how much am I looking at, dare I ask?
 
If you've got a Bosch service centre nearby they will bench test it for you, if it's just brushes or regulator pack they will fix it relatively cheaply.

Unfortunately if it's comm or stator windings it's time for a new one.......

I don't have the know how to remove it.

I will probably just end up paying through the nose for it :thumbsdown:

Wait until you start at Bowker then leave the car at the indy I use in Grt Harwood ( he's well known at Bowker as they often offload their problem cars on him :wink: ) from memory the alternator on my 6 series was about £200 which included removal , refurb & refitting :thumbsup:
Just keep the battery on conditioner in the meantime
 
Just because the battery is flat after a couple of weeks doesn't necessarily mean the alternater is duff.

Surely the first thing to do is charge the battery and check for a drain then check the charge rate with the vehicle running. Unless of course I have missed something and you had a previous fault with said alternater?

Why does everyone always think the worst first on here ??

He did have a fair show of gremlins on his recent euro roadtrip , somethings not right & agree it needs some investigation before chucking money at parts

Had the RAC out today to mobilise the Zed.

After extensive testing the result was the battery had failed (after a month). He was insistent the alternator was fine. However I'm not convinced and I'm still going to explore this option.
 
and if it is the alternators its usually the voltage regulator , to the actual Alt failing.... this part is cheap and easy to replace!

I don't think the voltage regulator on our's is as simple as on other cars, as it's part of the casing and not a separate/serviceable item (ask me how I know!).

A bit of digging suggest the regulator is Valeo part number 593873? Have a look at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-VALEO-OEM-ALTERNATOR-VOLTAGE-REGULATOR-593873-MERCEDES-C-CLASS-/172003594058 Probably beneath that black plastic cover held on by a couple of 8 or 9mm nuts?

My plan is to run a cable from the terminals in the engine bay to a multimeter in the cabin. Go for a good long drive and ask a friend to monitor the values.
 
For the alternator? Just run it at idle and see what the output is. It is possible you could have had a dud battery, they crop up every now and then.
