They have gone the same way as the rest now offering a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre flat six petrol engine, which in the Carrera develops 365bhp at 6500rpm and 332lb ft from 1700-5000rpm. In the Carrera S, those outputs rise to 414bhp and 369lb ft. Moving away from the larger naturally aspirated units of the previous models. The added power means the Carrera now sprints to 62mph from rest in 4.2sec when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono package. In the Carrera S, that time drops to 3.9sec, making both models 0.2sec faster than their outgoing equivalents.

Porsche says the facelifted 911 has already lapped the Nürburgring in 7min 34sec — more than six seconds faster than the outgoing car. The adoption of turbos has resulted in significant fuel economy gains. Porsche says its new engines are up to 12% more efficient than the units they replace.

The Carrera returns 38.1mpg in PDK guise, while the Carrera S achieves 36.7mpg which is impressive thats similar to a Mini Cooper S. The equivalent outgoing models managed 34.4mpg and 32.5mpg respectively. A new option on the 911 Carrera is a four-wheel steer system, similar to that used by the 911 Turbo and GT3.

The interior is also a big improvement with Porsche finally creating a multifunction steering wheel with the PDK integrated. The interior looks like a fantastic place to be what an improvement. Multimedia is now on a 7.0in touchscreen interface supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and satellite navigation is standard.

Thoughts…

Im sure they are incredible cars and I love the visual modifications and the interior looks stunning but I have a feeling the heart and soul is now disappearing with the electronic steering and now turbo charged engines that howl will be much reduced too similar to the Turbo.

What I will say is if you want a 997 or 997.2 buy one now as come december when they are launched they will be going through the roof as the purists snap them up. Similar to the E46 and E86s now being wildly more expensive.

I wonder how the turbo's will affect the sound. The NA boxers have that specific howl.

Most turbo engines can't 'howl' anymore. They try to add sound by giving the exhaust a hollow sound, but that gives more of a 'snorting' sound....

Been inevitable that this was going to happen, I think they need to be driven to see how they compare as the figures are pretty breathtaking the std car is not far off where the 996 Turbo sat in terms of performance.

I think the lower rear end looks a bit of a mess on some of the photos with the way the exhaust comes out of the valance - quite like the rear light cluster upgrade and the grille on the rear which was never the Carrera or Carrera S strong point.

we will see ....

Emissions certainly have a lot to answer for if you enjoy old school N/A engines/manual gearboxes/hydraulic steering...today and the futures obsession is twin clutch gearboxes, electric steering and turbo`s all in the chase for lower emissions, the future isn't bright when it comes to cars sadly.

We can look back in fondness though when cars used to be designed to thrill and involve the driver and that's what I will hang on to...now wishing I could afford a manual 997 GT3!! :driving:

Time for some investment crowdsourcing on something like this....

991 GTS still gonna be the car of choice then, just now there's going to be more people wanting nearly-new instead of new.

I should add - the attraction for me, to Porsche, is NA engines and handling. Take away the NA, and i'm instantly looking elsewhere.

Also, not a fan of the new rear end at all.

I didn't realise how much money the 996 GT3 fetched, that is a nice low mileage example.

Interestingly the pistonheads article has different pics, lacking the (imo horrible) centre exhaust setup on most of the pics (i spy it on their vert overhead pic):

Not sure on:

- Exhaust location
- Rear lights

Just wonder how it will drive with the Turbos, it is nice to be able to be lazy and drive in low gears and still being able to pull away quickly (manual gearbox only of course).

Looks like you can have either. Maybe its Porsches answer to making the turbo sound a bit more like an NA.

Interesting.

The 996/7 GT3 prices have been rocketing for two years at least (as I've found out to my cost). On the trajectory they were on until the 991 GT3 came out I would've been able to afford a nice 997 version by now. Now there's no chance unless my circumstances change significantly for the better (always possible).

My personal view of the 991 is that it is a great car but I don't really hanker after it. I really do think that if I had the choice between a 997.2 GT3/RS or GTS versus the 991 equivalents I'd choose the former. I know the 991 is faster, better in every measurable way, quicker round the 'Ring etc., blah blah blah.....BUT I can't quite get past the new market positioning and the size of it. It's quite a big car these days and the rear 3/4 looks too long to my eyes. I much prefer the proportions of the Boxster/Cayman. It seems to be slowly morphing into a Panamera coupe.

Edit : it doesn't sound great on that video Tom's embedded above. Mind you there are very few turbo engines that do sound good really. An F40 with a Capristo or Tubi-style maybe and after that I'm struggling a bit.

Yes, that certainly is the case! And wide as well, have to take the coach section on the Channel Tunnel as it does not fit in the standard train.

So the current 911 Turbo, whats that going to be called then.......

and it's called progress, embrace it, you can't live in the past (I can imagine similar discussions on the introduction of ABS, no we don't want a computer making it easier for you to drive). Don't knock it until you have driven it, the 488 GTB is Turbocharged and pretty much every tester thinks it is an improvement on the 458

Still going to be turbo .... its like Range Rover and Range Rover .. there might be Sports and Evoques but there is only one eponymous model the turbo.... well thats what the Porsche Press are saying.

the top end stuff is a bit of mine field - would sir like the investment grade GT3 or ... the instant depreciation Turbo S ? .... but it will be worth a bob or two in twenty years time.

I think non Carrera 996s look sensible buys at the moment they have started to look cool again - and actually the Gen II fried egg lights have a certain style about them.

Progress is moving forward, yes, but this advancement comes at a cost - driver involvement and experience. I think lots of people buy these cars purely for the fun factor, and progress is pointless if it's for the gain of EU regulations and statistics, and at the detriment of fun factor.

Luckily, we CAN live in the past. Any brands left sticking to NA only? That V12 Vantage is getting more and more appealing.

Ye it doesn't sound that great and didn't expect it to.

Im not saying ones better than the other as in real world terms the new cars are far superior, but IMO "progress" isn't always the case in terms of outright feel. Seen as tho you have the choice with an older car I would take the NA over the turbo. If you wanted a brand new car you haven't got the choice.

I think the 997.2 is the sweet spot in the water cooled era with the GTS is the best overall package. The GT3s are now in the stratosphere and I wouldn't want to live with one as an everyday car. If I had the money to be able to have a garage of cars it would be in there but I don't think its the best 911 in everyday terms, too raw.

Markets showing it there are barely any 997.2 GTS for sale the ones that are have no spec, high milage or are white. But it seems to be a trend atm, having a look on any of the car sites… there are no manual E46 M3s, E86 M coupes unless your willing to pay silly money. There is a huge resurgence for NA classic atm with barely any cars for sale.

You can get pretty reasonable 997.2 Carrera S's quite a few around but I don't know for how long.

Its only going to get worse so if you want one get in one or you'll find it will be like the 993 with standard Carreras with 80+k being over 55k and it gets worse the further up the hierarchy you go. Wouldn't want to spend that sort of money on a car regardless of how good it is because it will need 10-15k spent on an engine rebuild in a few years time.

Its is progress... The way forward is smaller displacement with a turbo..... But doubt any purest will enjoy the linear power.

Also with regards to supposed mpg... I dont buy it! My TT along with my brothers GTD are well under the claimed mpg... Bmw were far closer to the true figures.
