Hey everyone,

I'm just coming onto this forum to spend some of my free time reading and learning as much about my car as possible. A little about myself, I'm a 21 year old from California. I love 2 seater sports cars, and after landing my career decided it was time to sell my 1991 Mazda Miata (in pretty bad condition) and step up to the Z4! It's a 2003 model, 3.0i. I've put about 500 miles on the thing and it seems to be in good order. I did have the Service Engine Soon light just kick on, and a local mechanic and friend of mine said he's somewhat familiar with the Z4 and he'd take a look this Tuesday, and if it's anything he's not familiar with he won't charge me and I'll just take it down to a Dealer. After the light came on, I started paying real close attention to the engine sounds and I notice a very faint rattle at 1750 rpms.

I'm being optimistic about it and hoping that some light work is gonna fix it for less then 200 USD or so, and that'll be the last of my service engine light woes for at least 5 thousand more miles. The car has a couple faint scratches. Wheels have some light chips. Everything seems to function properly. Automatic top, cruise control, and power seats are some of the options that I think are optional (maybe not for the 3.0i). Had a little below 91k miles on it when I bought it, and I paid 13,888 USD, much cheaper than any other Z4 I could find used, and this one seemed to have more options. What do you all think? Good buy for the price? Thanks for you input, I look forward to conversing with you all.

Great looking car, looks to be in very good condition.

Perhaps see if your local BMW dealer is wiling to plug the diagnostic into the car to see which, if any, error message pop up. Surely they wouldn't charge you for this...

The local dealer not charging! More chance of my hair growing again.

Hope you sort the problem out without too costing too much.

Looks a lovely motor, though as with anything mechanical if the light comes on don't drive it too far till you get it checked out.

As for what you paid, seems Z4's in the US go for a real premium as I only paid £8.75k last month for mine... maybe now's the time to start importing cars from Europe rather than the other way round...

Welcome to Z city

Jembo, that may just be the case. It might be more so because the climate here tends to be a bit more convertible friendly than a lot of other places in the US. However, I just checked the starting price listed on BMW UK vs. BMW USA websites on a 2011 3.5i. The UK was considerably more expensive.

Btw, thoughts on the SMG transmission? Forgot to mention that's what mine is. I like it, although I think I would still rather have a manual; this is close enough. Just got be a bit more carefull around town, else ill start up the whole Kangaroo motion.

Nice Z, is it jet black ??really do like those wheels on a black Z.

I remember looking at the different colors for the different years, I don't think 2003 was offered in jet black. It is black tho. I think it was saphire something or other.

nice car,nicer weather !
absolutely right the weather here is crap for convertibles ( well it has been in July at least )
:D

Actually sometimes in July and August, the weather here can be much too hot for a convertible. On the freeway it's not as bad, but when we get those heatwaves and the temperature exceeded triple digits, (37.7C), I definitely don't wanna be caught at a stoplight with the top down. I'd much rather have the top up and AC blasting.

Can imagine that, year before last we got caught in roadworks in Italy, 40 minutes in 36 degree C heat on the autostrada almost had my finger reaching for the roof close button, ....almost :)
