Need to ditch the run-flats!

Hi All,
I have recently bought a 35is that is shod with Bridgestone run-flats on 19 inch 296 rims. As has been well documented on this forum, they bang around a lot and of course there's always the worry that an alloy could crack. I try and avoid potholes whenever I can, but two recent encounters really shook my fillings!
I had Pirelli P Zeros on a previous vehicle and really liked the way they performed but choosing them would be a case of sticking with what I know rather than exploring an alternative. So many people seem to champion Michelin Pilot Sports.
My question is does anyone have experience of both, and if so, how do they compare? I'm going to change all four so, at over £800 for the set, I want to get this right. Very appreciative of any advice :)

Hello..welcome..

I’ve not had P Zeros on an E89

I have had the Potenzas, Michelin MP4S, GY Assy 5, Conti Sports 5/5P and Conti Sports 7..

I await a user of P Zero and MP4 on an E89 for comment

Both are a premium tyre, but you should be able to get a set of MPS4s for about £400 with the right discount codes.

PZero is probably a little more ‘elite’ from a brand perspective, but a real world difference between those and MSP4s would likely not be appreciated by the average road user.

Please tell me where I can get a set of MPS4 for £400 pls? :tumbleweed:

I got a set from Kwikfit with a discount code.
Worth a look.

Zero experience with Pirelli here, but very happy PS4S bloke. Worth re-hashing this, tyres don’t perform by themselves. They go together with camber, pressure, suspension, etc, and must jive with your driving conditions and style. Otherwise it’s just ornament.

You can’t get MP4 in 19” sizes for an E89..

MP4S in 19” best price £727 with £60 discount..

MP5 not available either in E89 19” sizes

I just replaced a cracked 296 rim. :headbang: In the process of replacing the rim, the tire shop destroyed the Pirelli runflat. I replaced both rears with Goodyear Eagle F1s (Summer) just because they were available, forgoing a two-day wait on Michelin all seasons. After $1300 USD of injury from the cracked rim and replacement tires, I will never return to run flats. Summer tires are fine for me, this toy goes into storage in another few weeks.

I'm sure the Eagle F1s are a lesser tire than the P-Zeros... but I'm with @deepseaskateboard in the view that this is a toy for me, not a race car. The most significant difference in tire choice will be when you intend to drive... Summer/Winter and whether that's a different climate in your area! I'd stay away from Pirelli's since they are not warranted by the mfr for repairs.

I’m rollin’ 18”s

Sure but the OP is on 19” rims..hence the lack of some options..if you stick to BMW recommendations on sizes…

Ah, yet another 'tyre debate'. :)
My 2p worth:
Unless you are a) a professional racing driver and b) drive on the roads like one then I would challenge anyone to notice any perceivable difference in ANY make of tyre.
Controversial I know but I have never, ever, thought "these tyres are not very good" about ANY make of tyre on any car I have owned or driven. I am not a racing driver, though, just an average car driver going from A to B.
Even runflats are OK, just not on the E89, as the suspension is too firm already and they just exacerbate the problem. I have runflats on a 440; they are absolutely fine as the suspension is a lot more forgiving (read better). :)

People on every car forum I've seen in recent times will always recommend the PS4S; for what reasons I am sceptical. They are fine, but so are many, many other makes IME.

Someone's never had the pleasure of a sub £1k mid-engined RWD ebay car with budget tyres! Terrifying... but yes, easily rectified with a nice set of mid-range Toyo's or Yokohama's.

You see, there's the irony. I am old enough to remember when Toyo Proxes and Yokohama Advans were considered the dog's bollox in tyre choice for your average 'petrolhead'. I think marketing comes into play here a great deal as well as peer recommendations! :D

Michelin must be laughing all the way to the bank; as car forums do all their advertising for them these days :)

Had Michelin’s on the 35iS (PS4S’s) and M40i (SuperSports), the Conti 7’s now currently on the M40 are a better tyre than both and they have all been “put through their paces”

Or is the G29 just a better balanced and handling car?? Very subjective topic.

As I've said before; if they are black and round and hold air they do for me!!

M40i had Supersports prior to Conti 7..Supersports being ‘optimised’ for the car..
