Need to ditch the run-flats!

I swapped my RFTs for a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 tyres 3 years ago and its one of the best things I've done for my car. Just had a new set fitted the other day and the handling is buttery smooth now and the ride comfort is significantly improved over the Pirelli P Zeros that were on it before.

Let's face it, fellas, 19" tyre performance on the E89 is never going to be brilliant. Liquorice strips look good, but ...

If by the name ‘performance’ you mean ride comfort then for sure a move to 18” tyres will offer a perceivable improvement in ride comfort then that’s for sure…

Of course some will argue that a19`’ low profile tyre will offer enhanced cornering capabilities…

Having tried all permutations of 17 / 18 / 19 with both runflats and non runflats I think for a road going car (mostly in Scotland) I’d say 18” non runflats are the best trade off…suspension excepted..

http://tradepricetyres.co.uk Just ordered a full set of winter tyres (Blizzaks) for £400 on a staggered 18" set up for an E89 28si drive 2015 model from here.
Is that amazing or what !

Ah, yet another 'tyre debate'. :)
My 2p worth:
Unless you are a) a professional racing driver and b) drive on the roads like one then I would challenge anyone to notice any perceivable difference in ANY make of tyre.
Controversial I know but I have never, ever, thought "these tyres are not very good" about ANY make of tyre on any car I have owned or driven. I am not a racing driver, though, just an average car driver going from A to B.
Even runflats are OK, just not on the E89, as the suspension is too firm already and they just exacerbate the problem. I have runflats on a 440; they are absolutely fine as the suspension is a lot more forgiving (read better). :)

People on every car forum I've seen in recent times will always recommend the PS4S; for what reasons I am sceptical. They are fine, but so are many, many other makes IME.
correct.
People are lead to believe that the most expensive sticky tyres are the best.
If you are pushing the car hard enough to feel the difference, you should be on track.
As said, a good set of even mid range tyres will be plenty for normal road use.
A lot of the time, people dont even get the super sticky tyres up to optimum temperature on the road to even feel any benefit over mid range tyres.
Yes, avoid the ditch finders, but do not be lead to believe the most expensive stickie tyres will make any noticeable difference in normal road driving.
On track, yes, i have compared the various tyres on my bikes, and then there is a big difference, but again, if you have the best rubber available, it will still only make a difference over a less sticky tyre if you are pushing hard enough to get it up to temperature .

Both are a premium tyre, but you should be able to get a set of MPS4s for about £400 with the right discount codes.

PZero is probably a little more ‘elite’ from a brand perspective, but a real world difference between those and MSP4s would likely not be appreciated by the average road user.

Please tell me where I can get a set of MPS4 for £400 pls? :tumbleweed:

It’s back on!!!

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 - I’m putting over 400bhp through them and even in the wet their very good..

Only at 6000 (ish) rpm you are. And only on the back. Surely torque is the important factor when referring to 'tyre performance'?

Trust me there’s plenty of torque, the car goes like a stabbed rat, all I can say is how I’ve found them and I think their great in both wet and dry conditions. The run flats on it originally were terrible.

In what way?
I have Bridgestone Potenza RFTs on my Z4. They grip fine, just a tad 'firm' IME.
I also have Goodyear F1s (assy 5) RFTs on my other BM. They again grip fine, but are not too firm as the suspension is better.

I find them better on that car in every way compared to the run flats. I know other people that find them really good on other cars. I’m not on here to prove anything. I thought someone was asking if they ditch the run flats has anyone any recommendations….But I’ll stand by how dreadful the run flats are in comparison…

I had brand new Potenza run flats on two E89..one on 19” and the other 18”

Both on OE ‘sports’ suspension.

They tramlined horribly…the ride was crashy….the feedback poor…poor grip in the wet……apart from that they were great…

If you want to make a car handle better start with the tyres…

Got rid of my run flats with just over 12000 miles…. Replaced with Michelin MP4s ..Best thing I’ve done for my wheels..and my spine!
