Need new summer tyres

Hi all

I've come to put my summer tyres back on and noticed that one pair is quite worn.

I've got three main options:-

Falken FK452 (naturally) - £178 for a pair fitted
Michelin Pilot Sport 3 OR Primacy HP (can take my pick) - £236 for a pair fitted
Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta - £206 for a pair fitted

None of the above are run flats, but that's what I think I'd prefer.

I'd like something that is good all round, although I do prefer to have a little extra grip in the wet.

Anyone got any advice about which set to go for?

Take it they're pretty good all round and in all conditions then? They want to be given the price! :)

Nothing wrong with falkens, had them on my last Z. Got the vreds on this one, they're pretty noisy but great grip.

For your information Michelin PS3's are the replacement for the Michelin Exalto, not the PS2 which has been superceded by the Michelin Super Sport.

Personally I'd go for whatever tyre your "good" existing pair are, i.e. keep all 4 corners matching.

I'll have this dilemma sometime this year as my rears will need replaced, but the Falkens on my front are fine. My plan is another pair of FK452s on the rear but once that set's done I'll replace all 4, possibly not with Falken (no reason other than to experiment).

where are getting the falkens at £178 a pair fitted at mate? thats a very good price!

x2

even the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta are well priced, I need to get all 4 tyres pretty soon but not to sure what to get. Its between the falkens on the Vredesteins

I thought it was my imagination but my vreds are def noisey.

Plus point on the vreds and ps3's over the falkens is that they offer "some" rim protection on the wheel - but as i found out not enough to stop them getting curbed

I'm basing my prices on mytyres.co.uk and then adding a fiver a rim for fitting at my local friendly garage, it works out cheap doesn't it? :)

My tyres size is 225 45 R17 which also helps to keep the costs down. I had toyed with the idea of simply flogging al four wheels and sticking some 18's on there but haven't seen a decent set yet and can't really afford the expenditure right now anyway!

A late contender here:-

Camskill can do the Uniroyal Rainsport 2 at a price that works out as £175 fitted. I've heard good things about these tyres, anyone used them?

I would normally keep my tyres in matched pairs, but the other "good" pair are Potenza RFTs which needless to say, I won't be buying!

Hi Blue, I was always under the impression that you shouldn't mix RFT's and Non RFT's...

Officials seem to say its a no no, against manufacturers advice blah blah ...

Just so your aware before parting with your cash .....

Aye, it crossed my mind, but the mix won't be on the same axle and it's only going to be until I wear out the Potenzas which will then be replaced with something to match the other axle!

I'm really confused now anyway, reading reviews of the Rainsport suggests that they don't like potholes very much and tend to blow out the sidewall, my commute is littered with them so they may not be the best option!

Hmm, you've got me googling now and it seems that the consensus is that tyres should not be mixed at all. Bummer. Looks like I'm going for the FK452s then for the simple reason that they are cheap and I can get all four done for about £320 via Cam Skill.

Rainsports aren't much more but I'm genuinely concerned about them not liking potholes.

Towards the end of the year I may look at swapping out to a set of Ellipsoids but can't really afford it now, there's a set for sale on here but by the time a refurb and new tyres are paid for I'm going to be well out of pocket

There'll be a set of Potenzas going in the for sale section soon ;)

Def don't mix RFT and non RFT's. Lots of discussion threads on here about it. Some posts will tell you people have driven on them just fine, other that they perform differently on the limit (My belief)

Great if it were a commute car, not a balanced precision sports car

Yeah, I've made my mind up to change all 4 now, I just really am torn as to what to buy.

I keep reminding myself that the PS3's could be had on each corner for just over £100 more in total which is less than 2 tanks of fuel, but then at the same time it's a third more expensive than the FK452s, and I'm not sure that they'll be a third better!

:?

Of course the other question that I'm now asking myself is do I really need to ditch RFT altogether, should I just replace them with Conti Sport 2s.

This would work out at £227 for two, vs. £320 for FOUR Falkens.

Decisions decisions!

Ps3 vs Falkens... what is the wear rating for each tyre?

if PS3 wears better the extra could pay for itself :D

They're excellent tyres IME - I had them fitted for 15k miles on my Clio 172 (205/45/16 size) and rated them higher than the original Conti Sport 2's that the car came on. Quite progressive towards their limits too. Bear in mind that was a FWD lighter car though so not sure what they'd be like on the Z4.
