Navigation Screen Freezes & Resets

I have been experiencing navigation screen and radio button freezes and resets. I thought my head unit and navigation drive could be going bad, but I just remembered that I updated both the Navigation disk to 2013 and also updated the firmware to v32.2. I regularly get an error message that my drive can't read the disk and think it could either be a laser or a scratch or bad burn of the disk. I'm curious if there is any way to get the firmware back to stock, so I can put in the original 2003 or so navigation, to see if I still have radio / navigation freezing problems. Any thoughts, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Best Regards,

You don't need to change the firmware to use the 2003 disk.

From the above it sounds like you may have a non original BMW disk in the system, so my first suggestion would be to insert the 2003 (and no need to change firmware).

If you are going to use a 'custom' disk you must ensure you use a high quality single layer disk with a slow burn speed. Makes it much easier for the laser to read. If your disc is cheap or scratched and has been burned at a fast rate it will make your laser work really hard.

Thank you both for the replies.

I was under the impression that I was buying original factory discs, due to the price I payed. The discs came with nice labels, so I followed the instructions and updated to v32.2 and inserted the discs. It worked at first, but then I started getting read errors. I thought my Navigation DVD drive was going bad, so I started researching this and believe that the discs I purchased were burned. If it has red light cameras, night mode, etc. it is a modified disc, is that correct?

The radio and display freeze is the the much bigger issue for me. The navigation is nice to have, but I use my iPhone and google maps most of the time. But, the radio, cd, other functions freezing is a much more frustrating. Especially, when I come to a red light and turn off the car and turn it on again and it's still frozen. If I knew how to reset the radio on the fly that would be helpful, as well.

I can put the factory 2003 disc back in, which is not a problem and I will report back the results. I was was wondering if 32.2 is the most recent revision and/or is 32.2 a "modified version? If it is modified, can I or should I revert back to a more stable firmware? Thus, going back to a factory disc and a more stable firmware would kill 2 birds with 1 stone and give me a greater chance of fixing the issue. Also, if it still does it after doing this, I can move on to troubleshoot other possibilities.

Thanks again for your thoughts,

Not a firmware issue. Your nav computer is struggling to extract the data from your map disc at the correct rate. You just need to get a high quality single layer burn to make its life easier. You could try one of those cleaning discs too but I'm not sure they are effective. If you are really unlucky your laser might need replacing.
