So tip of the day.. Be VERY careful what you get on Nappa leather.

Trying to clean some stitching in the car today I put a little fabric cleaner on it;

And a gentle rub results in this..

Disaster! Normally id be so livid no one would come near me but I'm full of cold a d don't have the energy to be vile.

Looks like that scuffmaster liquid leather kit was worth the investment!

Well ill try the leather paint first and if that doesn't work then its a new door panel... Just £700 :(

Edit actually it seems you can just get the arm rest for £149 which isn't too bad I guess.. Ish. Damn.

Oh no - you wouldn't have thought it'd do that to it :o

Another top tip - don't sit on leather with skin sprayed with Jungle Formula insect repellent. Sat on our sofa yesterday after my boy's rugby training, realised I'd gotten it on the sofa, and when cleaned off it took some of the colour with it...

Well the first couple of scuff master coats are on.. It's not 100% but its better. Ill leave to dry and then finish it off later. Probably get it good enough that only a super close inspection would ever tell.

That is a lucky escape! There is no way I would have thought that could happen with a generic fabric cleaner. That said, they always warn you to try it in an inconspicuous area first, which of course nobody ever does...

Well done on the recovery

BMWs poor quality leather, It really shouldn't do that with gentle cleaning

Scuffmaster is good stuff though, from your pic looks like its masked most of the damage :)

I tend to use leather wipes at the mo and gently go over the seats etc although I think the Kansas leather might be more durable than the nappa? The lighter colours can be a nightmare to keep ontop of.

The dealer did the Guard X treatment on the interior so might break out the Kit they gave me :)

The nappa leather is very thin. You pay more for it, but its easier to damage. I don't think its just down to the leather quality, I think there was something in the product that reacted with the leather surface. I sprayed it on, agitated with a MF cloth and bam the surface just dragged away from the leather underneath. The damage has largely been addressed and I could always get a new arm rest on if it really did my head in but in fact its hardly noticeable now. I just lightly raised the surface of the leather before painting it and its covered nicely. I wish however that I'd not even bothered trying to clean the stitching now. Serves me right, I'll not be quite so particular in future. Thank god I didn't try this on the seats.

Have you tried BMW's foam leather cleaner? Under £10 and great value.

Simply squirt, agitate the dirt with soft hair brush and wipe with a MF cloth.

Leaves a fantastic clean matte finish. Works great on the steering wheel too, to get any greasy paw prints of. :)

I have some really good leather cleaner, I used that first to clean the leather but it didn't clean the stitching hence I thought well I'll try the fabric cleaner on the stitching... bad idea as it turned out :x

Should start a new thread 'Detailing Disasters' .

Im sure we all have a story to tell and can help others avoid making similar mistakes!

Thanks for the post, looks much better after stuff master.

That has shocked me :o but the job you have done on it to sort it is excellent...it just shows how much damage you can do to the soft nappa.

I would have to look at this stuff for the Abarth, as Mrs PVR has had a zip on one of the trousers which marked a corner of the driver seat. This looks pretty amazing stuff though.
