I'm in line

Ok - I have 4 of these, how about 2 each? :D
Thanks PVR but I've decided to take a raincheck - I really need to start getting rid of all my old gadgets and gizmos, not buying more stuff just for the sake of it!
Spikey I hope is still interested in taking these off your hands and if anyon'e interested in buying my SONY TCD-D8 DAT recorder and a box of DAT's drop me a line. PLayers in immaculate condition and there are about 30 tapes of various lengths/brands. Looking for about a gwand for all..... Will be putting on ebay if no takers here.

Sorry to jump on the back of ur post PVR!

Yep, that's the main sticking point, £30k :dizzy:
Here's my eurorack set up... I had to stop there! It's a bottomless money pit, like most things that are musical, hehe.
My setup nowadays is very 'practical'. Not many, in fact probably 1% of consumers have a set of speakers.lol. Those stats are pulled out of thin air btw ;) Most listen via a laptop, phone or in rare cases an ipod;even those have bitten the dust.
I'm a big advocate for digital as well as analogue. I like to mix it up. Software has come a long way since the 80's and I'm a big fan. I've had many sets of speakers though never owned anything that cost more that a couple of grand and that was a long time ago.
I use 3rd gen krk rokit 6's atm (Very cheap and quite cheerful) I have access to other sets to reference with. I've cleaned up my rooms spill, standing waves and reflections so the results tend to get very close to what I'm referencing from the sweet spot. The finished article seems to travel across other speakers of all shapes and sizes pretty well.

Nice setup DMC!
I have a little home studio at my place in the UK. Inventory consists of lots of old synths from the 80's which I started collecting back in the 90's when I could afford them 2nd hand. Mostly Rolands- SH101, juno6, juno 106, jx3p, jupiter 8. Also an Emulator 2 and ensoniq mirage early samplers as well as some tr's and tb's which i understand are probably worth a bob or two nowadays! As well as a myriad of other sequencers and drum machines. There's an Oberheim thing knocking around that i could never figure out how to program.
Always wanted some Moog gear but never found anything.

It's amazing that eurorack has taken off as the synthesizers that were available in the 80's were a direct replacement for all the old modular synths!

What comes around goes around eh

The 'Mirage'! 8-bit 32kHz & 128Kb of RAM. MASSIVE! That's where it all started for a lot of n-n-n-n-nineteen fans. Around 6 secs sample at a heady 10khz. There was nothing else around unless you knew Sting who'd bought all the Fairlights except for the ones Trevor Horn and Nick Rhodes bought before Sting got to the shop.

Moogs are still very sought after, but the old ones wander about a bit and need to be maintained which can cost a bit. I've had a mini and a voyager (originals)- Nice FAT sounds but again too much hassle to keep f**king about with. I sold them a while back along with a Korg MS20.
I use the Arturia collection and Korg software, with the right eq it'll take a keen pro's ear to tell the difference, especially when in the mix. You've got some analogue gems there and worth a good few grand now. The Jupiter 8 is still one of my faves. As for drum machines I've had the 808 and recently sold it, again I don't have the patience to work with the non midi stuff anymore...I use maschine if I want hands on and the http://d16.pl/nepheton in the box. My workflow is a lot faster nowadays so I gravitate towards 'Xfer nerve' as my main drum machine software. Superquick and sounds great. I love the eurorack, it's as whacky and impenetrable as it gets. Some of the modules still baffle me to this day but I get some great sounds out of them. It's great that there's now so many one man bands making all the modules. Got a 19min jam from last night...If you feel brave enough pm me your email and I'll pop over a dropbox link and you can have a listen.
Here's my studio

That looks like a very cool little studio DMC! I'd be in there for hours if it was mine!
I've been meaning to get back into playing around with the synths and sequencers but it's all located at my place in the UK and I've based myself in Holland for the moment!
Have a little software-based setup here in NL that I bumble about with occasionally - mostly putting DNB/dubstep tracks together and jamming along to some ambient Eno/Sylvian/Budd stuff on the piano.
Consists of a really impressive-for-the-price Yamaha KX8 USB keyboard which is beautifully weighted, and hooked up to the PC running Kontakt, Ableton, Cubase etc.

Some of the Kontakt Piano modules are insanely realistic, right down to the sounding board nuances on a vintage Steinway Grand!!
https://8dio.com/instrument/1969-steinway-piano-vst-au-aax-kontakt-instruments-samples/

Ableton still a massive amount of fun on a Friday night with a few beers buried in the mancave!

u can email me that link to [email protected]

Cheers

Does anyone want the DAT tapes? They are gathering dust (in their wrappers) so might as well give them to someone who can use them.

Hi PVR - I will have these if still available but would have to pay you something for them - realise they may already have found a new home though - let me know

Gonna have to fire up the old DAT player now - head clean first I think 8)

Well, they are yours Spikey - all 4 of them :D

I was charging Chris £100 for them, just because he is a tight arse - but they are free to you

Nice that some of you guys are preserving and using some old heritage analogue gear. For quite awhile it got no respect at all and many otherwise interesting units were trashed.

The purist recording studios often maintain an all analogue recording chain.

BTW, as tape suffers from shedding coating, and CD/DVDs suffer from digital decay, it looks like the longest lasting method of preserving recordings has come back to the vinyl LP.....

Hehe, i'm a big vinyl junkie and its so cool to see a sustainable resurgence in the format and even mainstream releases (coldplay etc). Anyone remember 'porky primecut'?

However, i'm more enthusiastic about 32bit DSD files these days which is basically 'studio quality' recordings and only limited by the quality of playback gear in replicating what was heard/recorded in the studio! Being digital it will also be around for as long as 'digital' formats are supported. Cant see that changing any time soon...

DSD, wow, that's oldskool...

I'll post the link over later this eve...

I was a logic die-hard but recently moved over to ablelton, love the superquick editing and ease of use. Tho I like to mix down in Logic x.

Talking of Steinways... This is my weekend practice piano, located in a beautiful little chapel in Hampstead London. My friend is the caretaker so I'm able to bypass the £220 per hour rental fee. Spend a couple of hours on it most weekends.

Thats true, but the studios that still run 2" tape are fast disappearing or should I say the tape machines are. Tape is sooo expensive now and most of the finished recordings tend to be run into pro tools, or some other DAW at the end which brings into question 'why waste the money on tape?". Though I do see the argument for the harmonic distortion which is one of the main reasons tape sounds so good. Jack white (White stripes) still uses an old 8 track tape machine. If he can't get it on 8 tracks it doesn't go on, no overdubbing. I put a cassette of the Eagles on in my ford fiasco, it only has a tape player and I was blown away by the sound quality.

I belong to a dedicated internet vinyl group, and we have a bunch of audio reviewers as well as mastering guys that check in from time t time. I think it was Stan Ricker, (who used half speed mastering for audiophile releases - see http://rickermaster.com/) who told of reels of master tapes that had taken on moisture over the years until they were basically glued together on the reel.

The cure was to gently heat them to allow separation. On some of the rare masters, sticking them in an oven to gently warm worked, but the oxide layer on the tape backer was so tenuously attached that they only got one playing to use before they were trash. I can imagine how nervous they would have been when cutting a master in one shot. Guess they probably ran the output into another recorder to save a second generation copy, but who knows how good that would be.

BTW, a recent post referenced an article stating that vinyl sales topped downloads recently!

+1 for tape.
My first 'professional' recording device was an old fostex portable 4 track that used standard tapes. It was ace!
My Yamaha KX-580se is still making all those Peel sessions I recorded back in the 80's sound as good as when they first aired!
Still trying to locate a decent tape player for the rear centre console for the zed. Lol

Haha Chris - adding to my existing pile of stuff would provoke a bad reaction from Mrs Spikey - she would go raking and find all the guitars she knows nothing about

https://9to5mac.com/2016/12/06/vinyl-sales-greater-than-digital-sales-last-week/[/quote]

That's a nice thought, but the fact is that the growth for the sale of vinyl sold in the previous year was the margin by which a recent comparison was made. Therefore, the margin of growth from a very small vinyl sales market percentage was exponentially higher than the dloads which is fast decreasing in the light of streaming. There wasn't more records sold than dloads made as of 2016. I recently wrote a thesis titled 'Change in income revenue streams for artists in the last 15 years'. It's all streaming now, vinyl has made more sales from indie labels pressing up for djs. Pressing vinyl is sooo expensive nowadays. There's only two major pressing plants that are worth using in the EU. One in Germany and on in France. I was speaking with the owner of Hospital records (Uk based D&B label) and he mentioned that they press a 1,000 every now and then for special releases making nothing on them after, recording, mastering, cutting, pressing, printing, shipping and distribution. It's all digital, most of the djs are incorporating live composition tools and DAWs with the CDJ decks. So they dload the lossless file or another high quality file, burn it to CD or turn it into a WAV for Ableton live and off they go.

If you dig deep enough you'll probably find the the site that you linked to is owned by apple and is a marketing site for Apple streaming service. They use a lot of different angles to get people from all listening prefs to use their service. Btw, I haven't bothered to check out the site but it's a commonly used tactic.

But that said, it's getting close to the festive day so there will naturally be an increase in buying anything.
