The third system is consistent - 300 lbs. of amps and giant speakers, but they sound great (this is in the old room - now re-established in a new venue. That's an old small screen, too. The current one is 125". Not easy to get a good listening room that also accomodates a home theatre. Too many hobbies........

All the old hardware gear sounds a lot better today because of the advance in speaker technology. I've been involved in the music biz for many years and had a home studio with a lot of hardware in the form of speakers, desks, amps, effects, and instruments. Even with a set of speakers costing more than a car in the 80's the sound of the gear was shite (but it sounded good at the time) compared to putting the same gear through modern speakers. It's a world apart in sound quality. What you can buy nowadays for £400 blows me away. I've spent a small fortune on a eurorack (analogue and digital synth modules mixed in together) setup that sounds out of this world. But that's making music with the hardware not listening to it via a recording.
So much is lost from the studio to the home listeners speaker,s no matter how expensive the setup. But the 'enthusiast' can deffo get some astounding results. Speaker placement, room acoustics can make the big difference. Having a great set up in a room that's had a few minor 'adjustments' can improve the sound immensely.
Having a great set up in a crap square room will muddy everything in a crescendo of standing waves and reflections...

Here's my eurorack set up... I had to stop there! It's a bottomless money pit, like most things that are musical, hehe.
My setup nowadays is very 'practical'. Not many, in fact probably 1% of consumers have a set of speakers.lol. Those stats are pulled out of thin air btw
Most listen via a laptop, phone or in rare cases an ipod;even those have bitten the dust. I'm a big advocate for digital as well as analogue. I like to mix it up. Software has come a long way since the 80's and I'm a big fan. I've had many sets of speakers though never owned anything that cost more that a couple of grand and that was a long time ago.
I use 3rd gen krk rokit 6's atm (Very cheap and quite cheerful) I have access to other sets to reference with. I've cleaned up my rooms spill, standing waves and reflections so the results tend to get very close to what I'm referencing from the sweet spot. The finished article seems to travel across other speakers of all shapes and sizes pretty well.

I have a little home studio at my place in the UK. Inventory consists of lots of old synths from the 80's which I started collecting back in the 90's when I could afford them 2nd hand. Mostly Rolands- SH101, juno6, juno 106, jx3p, jupiter 8. Also an Emulator 2 and ensoniq mirage early samplers as well as some tr's and tb's which i understand are probably worth a bob or two nowadays! As well as a myriad of other sequencers and drum machines. There's an Oberheim thing knocking around that i could never figure out how to program.
Always wanted some Moog gear but never found anything.
It's amazing that eurorack has taken off as the synthesizers that were available in the 80's were a direct replacement for all the old modular synths!

Nice that some of you guys are preserving and using some old heritage analogue gear. For quite awhile it got no respect at all and many otherwise interesting units were trashed.
The purist recording studios often maintain an all analogue recording chain.
BTW, as tape suffers from shedding coating, and CD/DVDs suffer from digital decay, it looks like the longest lasting method of preserving recordings has come back to the vinyl LP..... :evil:

Hehe, i'm a big vinyl junkie and its so cool to see a sustainable resurgence in the format and even mainstream releases (coldplay etc). Anyone remember 'porky primecut'?wspohn said:

Haha, it probably is! Twice over! I actually have 2 but one doesnt work. Suspect the power module as theres no lights or anything. Always meant to fix it but never got around to it. Picked it up for £200 at Hessy's in Liverpool who told me it was given to them by Thomas Dolby's road crew when they were in town for a gig in the 80's. Apparently it was DOA and Hessy's couldnt source a fix in time and it was never colllected. They kept it for 5 years in the back of the shop before having a mass clear out. The working one sounds lush though- 8 oscillators! Has that typical 80's synth sound.
Edit: 8 voices rather- 2 oscillators each= 16 oscillators! Not that we're counting lol

The 'Mirage'! 8-bit 32kHz & 128Kb of RAM. MASSIVE! That's where it all started for a lot of n-n-n-n-nineteen fans. Around 6 secs sample at a heady 10khz. There was nothing else around unless you knew Sting who'd bought all the Fairlights except for the ones Trevor Horn and Nick Rhodes bought before Sting got to the shop.
Moogs are still very sought after, but the old ones wander about a bit and need to be maintained which can cost a bit. I've had a mini and a voyager (originals)- Nice FAT sounds but again too much hassle to keep f**king about with. I sold them a while back along with a Korg MS20.
I use the Arturia collection and Korg software, with the right eq it'll take a keen pro's ear to tell the difference, especially when in the mix. You've got some analogue gems there and worth a good few grand now. The Jupiter 8 is still one of my faves. As for drum machines I've had the 808 and recently sold it, again I don't have the patience to work with the non midi stuff anymore...I use maschine if I want hands on and the http://d16.pl/nepheton in the box. My workflow is a lot faster nowadays so I gravitate towards 'Xfer nerve' as my main drum machine software. Superquick and sounds great. I love the eurorack, it's as whacky and impenetrable as it gets. Some of the modules still baffle me to this day but I get some great sounds out of them. It's great that there's now so many one man bands making all the modules.
