Thanks but you may wish to check that the code on the bottle is designed for BMW engines. Last time I got Edge from Costco the code was for VAG engines and I use It when servicing my sisters Polo as it's the correct spec.

Often wondered if it is really that different, but never bothered to research it.

Probably isn't too dissimilar and I can't think that it would make a huge difference if changed frequently but always worth going for LL04 spec.

It shouldn't be. I believe it's due to VAGs long life services on some of their cars as you can have the car serviced every 12 months or based on miles and the car ECU can be changed by the dealer to reflect this.

I only know because my sisters Polo was on a 12 month frequency when she was doing little miles so they changed the settings.

From the Castrol Product Data sheet..................

Castrol EDGE 5W-30

Product Performance Claims

ACEA C3
BMW Longlife-04
MB-Approval 229.31/ 229.51
Porsche C30
VW 504 00/ 507 00
Fulfils the requirements of the former VW 503 01 specification

and......... Castrol EDGE 5W-30 is approved for use in VW Group vehicles that require a VW 504 00 / 507 00 5W-30 lubricant including vehicles with
variable service intervals and diesel vehicles equiped with a diesel particulate filter.

Can't see Costco having their own version that leaves something out, (or puts something nasty in....?)

So I assume you checked the code on the bottle and then cross referenced this with the Castrol site. Believe it or not there is several different versions because they contain different mixtures.

So what is the code on the bottle?

Even on the Castrol site they now list the new Titanium version which seems to indicate that it may cover different vehicles but you are still advised to check you handbook prior to purchase. They also lost more than one 0W-30 Edge and the other version of titanium is mentioned for Honda, jag etc but I believe in total there is a few different mixtures available, even more now they've introduced edge titanium.

And I note you've quoted the 5w-30 when the recommended oil is 0W-30 but I think that's due to the information held elsewhere.

Nope.

No idea.

Doesn't seem unreasonable.

The handbook that came with my 2014 car (p245) quotes "BMW recommends Castrol" and "SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40 and SAE 5W-30". From memory the selection of the "W" figure is climate / ambient temp dependent.

Maybe mother got it wrong and gave me the wrong book?

Anyway - I have no horse in this race and it won't change my life one bit if anyone rushes out to Costco, or Halfords or anywhere else and spends their hard earned on a drop of Castrol Edge. But there would seem to be a saving available...

And perhaps if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility.................
