N52 Engine Noise Information (HVA) *Cost Update

I am so happy it finally got it done. It was done under the 3 year new car warranty rather than the approved used warranty.

I`ll get the invoice on Monday to give an idea of cost changes since srhutch had his changed 2yrs ago.

Currently driving an 11 Plate Mini, its terrible. I`ll keep everyone updated once I get it back.

Just got the invoice for the all the work £2000 for replacing cylinder head + £700 for replacing the HVA's.

They also found I had a leaking exhaust manifold and when they replaced that did not store the water pump properly when they removed it (must be kept in a sealed container full of antifreeze) so they had to replace that - there goes another £600.

TOTAL COST £3300 (This is with labour @ cost only)

Car feels more repsonsive, exhaust note is crisper. Love it!

any more issues with the N52 engine?

i started mine the other day and i could hear this noise, this is only the 2nd time i have noticed it and i know it will not show up once i am at a dealers

i want to try and get it sorted whilst its within its 3 year warranty

Like srhutch, ive had no further issues since the head was replaced. Touch wood.

If mine had only done it twice I woukdnt be too bothered but it was getting more and more regular...and louder. All sorted now though.

i may contact bmw and see what they have to say, if its a known fault mine may get worse, if i can get it done within warranty it will be better

car as gone to williams rochdale today, i have just emailed them a video and a link to this post

they have had previous good feedback on here so hopefully they will not disappoint, fingers crossed

had an email from BMW Rochdale today, they have witnessed the noise and have sent a report to BMW HQ, they are waiting for a reply/instructions as to what they should do

That's good Taz, no doubt they will change the HVA's only though.

Thats all BMW are authorising apparently as the new design of HVAs fix it (according to BMW that is, which is bollocks but even the UK MD has got fed up with talking to me about it now!)

richtea78, who is the UK MD?

have you got any correspondence from him?

Tim Abott is the UK MD, his email address is [email protected] although he is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard and just passes everything on to his underlings to deal with.

To quote the last correspondence I had from one of the plebian underlings

I have spoken with Chandlers Worthing who have advised us that they have thoroughly investigated your car and thereafter replaced a number of components as a precautionary measure which they have discussed with you. The dealership have also advised us that the “noise” that you are experiencing is characteristic of this particular model and that no manufacturing defects have manifested themselves and indeed the “noise” that you are experiencing will have no adverse affect, or cause any consequential damage, on your car. I do appreciate that this does not meet your expectation with regard to eradicating the “noise” entirely and I can only offer you my sincerest apologies that this concern has caused you such dissatisfaction.

As you say complete bo**ocks, and replacing the HVA's is hit and miss as you say. :x

Lucky I was one of the first to get the problem to getting mine fixed properly.

Well I am only planning on keeping it another 18 months or thereabouts so I doubt anything will go wrong with the engine in that time at least.

Id love to see what it does longer term though, the clicking is obviously not normally and it implies excessive wear so I bet it wont be good long term!
