N52 3L mpg

Just had my first long drive in my new Zed, 130 miles home on dual carriageway and motorway between 70-80...averaged 37mpg. Previous owned seemed to average 32mpg. Clearly a motor that benefits being warmed up;

Unless you bought new, I don't think depreciation on these cars is bad at all. Particularly not on the Coupes.

Bought mine at 18months old!

Fair enough, that may have depreciated somewhat! I bought mine a month ago and I dont expect to lose much on it (providing I dont have any accidents obviously).

Bought June 2012 - £25.5k
We buy any car value £15k

But I'm not worried as my last shirt won't have any pockets !

 Like that ronk - never heard it before

Re. depreciation - Seems like the Zed holds it's value surprisingly well at the lower end of the market, especially if you can show it's well cared for . . . .

Z4 may not be the right choice if mpg is a major consideration - search 320d!

FWIW my OBC is showing 31.7 average at present, but I don't use mine to commute and the p*xy M3 has 50 average cameras at present (and for the foreseeable future)!

Mpg is not a major consideration for me but when you do use it as a daily doing 52 miles a day you still want to get the most out of it as traffic doesn't permit much 'fun time'. It may as well cost me as little as possible going to work so there's more to spend when I'm not!

Ditto. I didn't buy the car for the fuel economy but if I can use it effectively, then it's a bonus.

I read an article a few years back, guy called Anthony Sale (link). He stated that the optimum revs for each manual gear in a petrol engine was 2,500 - at that point you need to change gears if you are going for economy (2,000 rpm for diesels). He also said that driving at 80mph is 10% less fuel efficient than driving at 70mph.

Be interested to see what you can get with driving following these guidelines?

EDIT: here's the article...

Evening peeps

Thanks for the advice on resetting the avg mpg and mph.

Im in wales now and i have done a few mpg tests whilst on my route from cornwall to wales.

So findings as follows:
- country lanes (average driving) on windy and hilly roads - 48mph avg = 32mpg
- flatish motorway - 78mph avg = 35 mpg
- "' - 70 mph = 40 mpg
- '' - 52 mph = 48 mpg

*Please note two people in car (~120kg) and full boot (~20kg).

I achieved this by setting the speed on cruise control and running at least for 15 mins... please note that the averages were reset at each speed so doesnt include warm up time, which will lower mpg.

Overall i found the avg a bit crap if driving stlye was varied e.g. country lanes to motorway.

Next time im doing a big motorway stint ill try and see how gearing effects the mpg. I would imagine not too much but who knows

So next question is..... how reliable do you think the mpg calculator is?

T

(UPDATE)
- 25mph avg = 25 mpg (relaxed driving)

I work mine out manually & my trip computer is accurate to approx 1mpg, I would say that's fairly accurate :P

The mpg calculator is pretty accurate on mine. I've checked it by calculation on filling up numerous times and it's usually within the next jump in value of the trip meter so as accurate as it can be. For example it goes 32.1 to 32.4 and it could be 32.2 when I work it out showing 32.1.

Not sure how accurate my OBC is, although it is showing an average of 31.7 mpg and an average speed of 35.6 mph since it was reset when my water pump was changed in January but that was only about 1,000 miles ago.

My sad Excel spreadsheet is showing 32.8 mpg over about 8,000 miles, but that is dependent upon the mileometer being accurate!

I probably get better than most because I don't commute in it (now that I don't work) and don't use it for short trips locally (the 325ti goes to Tescos), plus I am regularly on the M3 between J4 and J2 where there is a 50 average limit and the M25 from J12 to J10 with variable speed limit (usually low!) until I get to the A3 where I can finally open it up a bit :D

Having said all that I don't really care about mpg - anything over 30 is good for a car that is so effortlessly quick and sounds this good! If I was that bothered I would have kept my 123d! (And still gone reasonably quick, but in a dull and boring sort of way)!

Yeah overall anything 30+ is good in my books.

Once again z4 proves to be amazing for mpg / economy / speed / luxury / overall cost / fun!

Ok great... think that solves all questions!

On the flat motorways in the Netherlands I've seen well over 40 mpg - then it all goes to Hell in a handcart when I reach the German border !

I can't imagine why - is Germany very hilly? :D

There are hills, of course there are hills but it's those sudden 140mph head on winds on some parts of the Autobahn that does the real damage to the fuel consumption!

Yes, those 140 mph winds are not economical!

It gets worse if you have a 3 litre - they can turn into 155 mph winds (restricted only by the limiter)!

+1, My commute is only about 6miles a day, but 16 miles round trip on 'B' roads to the nearest Shell station to fill up with Vpower, thats when the fun begins!!

Mine is 3.0 but the limiting factor is Mrs K in the passengers seat - I find it impossible to concentrate or enjoy a blast with that screeching and feet stamping - yes feet stamping, going on!

To be fair she doesn't start playing up so much and so early when the roof is on!
