N52 2.5 Water Pump

Hi folks,

First BMW owner so please don't come at me I'm still learning 🤪

Gonna be changing the water pump out on my e85 sooner rather than later (just waiting for low ramps to pop up at the right price!) as it's still on the original pump, from 2006 on 135k miles, I'm frightened to say the least 😂.

Was just wondering what are the "go to" pumps, particular thermostat?

I did read somewhere there's one you can get without the gasket and it bolts straight on with the 3 bolts provided, but I'm not too fond of that idea, any one else tried this?

Also, might be a stupid question as I've never done this on any car before, (non belt driven and the latter), I assume drain coolant beforehand and refill with new stuff?

Anything else I should be checking while I'm in the vicinity of the water pump?

Couple other knick knacks with the car, but nowhere near as important as this!

Sorry for the long read, but I appreciate yous making it through it 😀

Cheers 1000012482.png

If your car is deffo the n52-

It’s a fairly simple job. Euro car parts have 30% off at the moment so a pierburg unit is £329

Don’t buy cheap

You don’t need gaskets as the pump sits outside of the engine. Don’t reuse the bolts from the old one they are single use

Undo the 2 electrical connectors. Undo the big u shaped hose between the pump and the thermostat

The hoses are a combination of the clip release and jubilee clips. Undo the ones around the thermostat next then unbolt the thermostat from the pump (2x 10mm)

Once that’s off take the rest of the hoses off the pump and the 3 securing bolts. The upper one be mindful not to undo the wrong bolt as it’s easy to take a bolt out of the air con compressor

I prefer the n52 pump to doing the m54 one. While there check the condition of your belt.

Bleed the system using the n52 bleed procedure which is electric and refill the system with the right coolant

Is there any benefit to changing the hoses at the same time? Thinking purely for preventative reasons. Or is it a case of if it ain’t broke…..

Sometimes your hand is forced- where the o ring fails. However experience is that usually is the top one from the OFH to the expansion tank

Did my N52 waterpump and stat a few weeks ago. Peirburg pump and Mahle stat. Wasn't looking forward to doing it. Did research on here and watched loads of youtube videos. Go with Bigwinns guide and allow plenty of time. To help a few days before starting I premixed the new coolant, got out the tools I needed and wrote down the torque specs for all the fixing bolts. Went better than I expected. I'm no expert and nothing broke or went wrong, but a bit of planning and patience getting the old hoses of helped me along. Good luck!
