Mystery car - 56 plate 2.5i

Hi all, I have just taking possession of my first Z4. Had quite a few BMW's in the past but this is the first Z4. So where's the mystery? Well purchased the car from someone at work and they have owned it for a few years but parked it after it failed its MOT on relatively minor (IMO) issues. Believe it or not, not much information after that, other than an attempt to get it going again recently failed after it was sitting for some 2 years. Now - I purchased it unseen other than some poor photos. Firstly sticking to the basics. Got the battery charged and it turns over but doesn't seem to want to fire. Not even a splutter. So removed a spark plug (they have all been replaced) and looks clean and dry. Found fuse 19 in the glove compartment box missing. This seems to be the low pressure fuel pump, filter & sender unit. Replaced with a new 20A and when you turn the key the rear pump sounds like a bag of nuts & bolts. Clicking etc. Anyway removed the fuel rail test cap & relieved the pressure. Pulled off the fuel feed pipe to the rail and ran it into a clean bottle. Appears to be petrol (good start!) and water free but not confirmed. Looks to be a good flow of fuel to the pipe so although the rear pump sounds crap, it appears to work. So now I am on the hunt again for next thing to try. Assuming the fuel is good (for the moment) I want to check all the fuses, to ensure we are making sparks. Does anyone have a fuse chart for the fuses under the bonnet please. Many thanks - already gained loads from the forum. Beat regards David

Welcome. :)

Keep digging it's just an engine, if it turns over it will fire up................... eventually

Check the plugs for sparking, you could have good fuses on the ignition circuit & still have no sparks if the coil packs have gone awol
Rob

I have now checked all the fuses I can find and all good. Have taken out 3 spark plugs and none appear to be sparking. Again engine turns over and fuel seems ok. I have checked the resistance of the ignition coils. They are about 0.6ohms.going to get a single new ignition coil and try it. If it then sparks we are a little closer to getting it going.

Euro Car Parts
A noisy fuel pump can often be sorted with half a bottle of Red X petrol treatment .Tesco have it on offer on a regular basis, about £2..
Is there a non std immobiliser fitted..

You will certainly need to replace the battery if it has sat for 2yrs...despite the fact that it charged. The plates will be completely sulphated.

As above, a new coil pack will eliminate a few things. If still no joy, start looking at EWS module.

Thanks. The car door locks open & shut on the key and the engine cranks at the moment so I assumed the EWS was good. The DME control unit does not come up when I connect INPA, it reads some modules but not the DME. Also by way of an update - new battery fitted and new fuel - disconnected the fuel line at the fuel rail and its gushing out. I am going to check that I actaully have power to the DME and other modules and see where it leads me.

Have you actually observed a spark yet with one of the plugs and coil pack removed (you will need to ground the plug thread to chassis with a flying lead or hold it against the block).

No sparks - I removed 3 separate plugs and checked with the coils by grounding well with a jump lead to negetive. Also checked the +posv. feed to the coils but no luck. I think this feed comes from the Integrated supply module once the DME gives it a signal. Going to go back to the basics at the weekend and check that I have the 12v to the module supplys. Many thanks for the continued support.

Welcome to Z4 ownership, be very satisfying once you get it going, you’ll get to know the car very well by then.

Quick update - after testing all fuses etc I am pretty sure the main control module DME is suspect. We connected the INPA software and a read of the vehicle reported many modules not communicating. However because the CAN-bus mainly supports the DME, DSC, instrument display & gearbox, looking at the DSC report it states the error is in communicating with the DME. So next step is to send the DME away for a test & report. Will let you all know how the test goes. If anyone wants to view the INPA error report and vehicle readout its in PDF, so PM me your email and I can send it that way. Regards David

Mystery solved - the picture above shows the upper corner of the DME module. I was hoping that the corrosion was just outside but we now know it got inside. The PCB was fried. Anyway new DME and programming today and she started. Pictures and updates on whats next to follow. :D

No, I agonised over DIY or not. The biggest issue for me was to find a good donor DME module. So in the end, and being probably being too eager to get in started, I opted to take it to a specialist. Went to BW Chiptune in Hayes Middlesex. Good service and very accomodating. Still cost me £690 all in.

No. My big concern was finding a decent DME module and prices seemed all over the place. So got a unit from BW Chiptune in Hayes Middlesex. They programmed and got the car started again. Module is warrantied as well. Cost £690 all in parts & labour. Very good service but is still an unexpected cost. Anyway now the fun starts getting everything else fixed :D
