Im getting an £500- 1k run around for work and the dreaded winter months ahead, i just cant bear to use the Zed in the winter with all the rain, snow and salt  so until i can afford my "Mini cooper S" before next winter im just gonna use the little run around until then as by end if the year i would have spent ALOT of money on mods and replacement parts plus the many hours detailing. :headbang:
The plan is this December to get a run around, then before next winter get a proper run around and then give the first car to my girlfriend as her first car as she is doing her driving lessions :driving:.....the Zed will stay on the drive from Oct-March un-taxed with a cover my girlfriend is getting me for Christmas.
So i will save money on 6 months Zed tax and petrol and getting her ruined over autum and winter, the cost in extra car insurance and road tax for the run around will still be more cost effective as using the Zed 12 months a year instead just the 6 months a year.
Will the Zed be ok as i plan to start her up whisk her around the block for a few miles then clean her, cover her back up weekly? I know some of you on here only use the Zed as a toy too so im not completly Zed mad am I
The Z will be OK - but, if you've SORN'd her to avoid paying road tax and are caught driving her, you won't be...

I would get a battery conditioner, and not bother driving her at all.

Presume it will still be insured.

Also if untaxed you can get caught on cctv too... Which will work out very expensive.

:withstupid:

...also, pump the tyres up to 40 psi to prevent flat spots

If you want to keep her pristine then you won't want to be driving round salty roads for any distance anyway I'd have thought ?

Presume you're keeping her insured, so I'd have thought that it's worth taxing for the full year rather than 6 months for hoons on those lovely crisp & dry winter days or if spring comes early - I could understand it if you were paying ///M VED rates but isn't a 2l £121 for 6 months and £220 for 12? So it's £99 to be able to (legally) use her whenever you want

I 'winter' #320 but tax her for the full year so my options are kept open and, if the conditions are right, I'm not constrained about when she can come out to play

I'd get your runaround before December. Early november maybe? Saying that, they probably dont start salting the roads until December down where you are

I would resist "small runs" I think the lack of real heat built up in the exhaust may leave moisture and rot the exhaust?, I use mine all year round. Put the hard top back on today. Not sure I would enjoy a run around knowing my zed was so close. I know younhave spent a fortune on your car but what about a professional detail in early spring to make it look excellent for the summer. Would work out cheaper.

My Z will be used for 6 months only, as per my motorbikes only taxed May to October.

A good trickle charger is essential. Indoor Dust cover,
The handbook says tyres to 50psi, unless you can put her on axle stands.

My question is about the Key that is charged when in ignition,do you have to start her up to charge the key ?

Or is there some other method of keeping the key charged.

I still struggle with the pack it away mentality. It's a modern car, a bit of dirt won't hurt it and cause it to melt a way, plus you seem to clean it most days. When you have a nice car why would you want to sit in and use a shitter? It only takes that one time and it doesn't have to be your fault for something to happen when out untaxed/uninsured and then you are in a world of pain. Imagine your face when the low loader turns up and the front spoiler is torn off :o "sorry mate not my fault it's to low"

Anyway more importantly, driving lessons for the girlfriend, how old is she? :o

Just my point on the pack it away mentality.
My car is a Toy I have run fully expensed company cars for nearly 30 years my car is my hobby.
It's a keeper I'm 56 years old and unless I win the lottery I expect to keep the car past retirement age.
Every year it will get some kind of expensive upgrade that it would not get if it was a daily driver.
Only taxing for 6 months is not about the money it's about not running it on salted winter roads and crapping up a very expensive toy.

Every one to their own some will run all year round and get rid after a few years when it's not as good as it could be. others like to tinker and enjoy the car being as good as it can be and enjoying roof down in the summer

You can't beat a blast on a frosty morning, hat and gloves on, heater full blast and roof down.

I've used all my cars through every winter, as said here already, they're modern cars unlike the rust buckets of past. Get a good coat of polish on before the winter, and frequent cleans. Any chips you get from salted roads etc, can be dealt with really cheaply with a fresh coat of paint after a couple of years.

Just use them!

I get the tucking it away over winter part, to avoid the gritted snowy roads. I avoid using mine if the weather is crap, I don't see the point as it can't be enjoyed. However my daily isn't exactly swish so even in the mid winter I will use it if I have somewhere nice to go, irregardless of roads and weather.

I would def keep it tax'd/etc if you can afford it. For the price of a night :icb: :bonk: , you can have the zed out on a crisp clear day, stick your beanie on and live the dream. I think I enjoy those days the same and sometimes more than a sweaty day getting sunburn.

Jonny as above dont dive it weekly, leave it alone. If you keep it taxed just use it for decent long hoons.

Mine will be garaged and tax sent back at end of Oct until Feb/Mar. But mine only gets used once/twice a month anyway.

Summer hot days... Tar gets hot, lose chippings, tar also sprays under the car and crap gets stuck to it. Flies get stuck on the paintwork, even worse at night with moths. Certain summer months the bugs eat sap from trees, berries and other acid stuff that kills the paintwork. The summer sun bleaches the paint, plastics and rubbers. Lack of rain causes gritty dust, one slight rub and scratches your paint.

Winter looks pretty good after this ;)

Just drive it and enjoy it, nothing changes!
Watch this vid about a Porsche 356 and the owner doing a million miles in it as a daily drive, he's owned it 40 years.

Lol - very true

I have a tree over my drive which has lots of white fly in it during the summer. Much to my annoyance I would wash the car, dry it, and by the time I finished the wheels off there would be little white sticky blobs on the boot and rear wings. Pretty sure it was white fly crap... Which then required quick detailer to get off :x

Mine gets used most days, but only do about 8k a year and that's set to drop again with my fiancé moving down.

I've got a spare set of style 201's with winter tyres for the, er, winter.

I normally wax up with a few coats just before winter hits and the car is easy to clean then right through until spring.

If its too horrendous ill leave Z in the garage and just use Gems mini.

I have winter wheels.. and even though i have a company car i still rather drive the Z, even in snow.

Just have to make sure i rinse it more in winter.

But glad you came to sense and decided to tax it.

Spending "£12K" on mods and then skimping on £99 road tax
