My Z4M CSL - Stage 3 Mods

Performance BMW Feb 2013 edition, out on sale on 3 Jan 2013. There will be a small follow-up article in a later edition about rear bump.

Have to say the m3 draws allot of attention on the road, Joe Blogs on the street just thinks it's a BMW special edition of some kind. Have had many a conversation in a car park where people have come over an asked loads loads questions, lol. Even at the main dealers they all come out to marvel at both cars (M3 and Z4M), lol. Parked together its the Z4M that draws more conversations...

I must admit the Stage 3 head, larger incol values etc on the Z4M is pretty amazing, would love to go the full NA hog with s65 engine (Stage 3 head, flywheel etc). Or drop a V10 in it, LOL. A great project would be the new Z4 e89 shape with a BMW V10 engine. It would look great, sound amazing and go like stink, :D Me thinks a new project on the horizon..... oh just woke up, lol.

Well I hope people get chance to read the article in Jan as it tells the story of my journey from Z4M to M3, where I was then and where I am now, where the M3 e92 was the Z4M's enemy and now is its closest friend....

My M3 has made the front cover of February edition of Performance BMW Mag, LOL

"Riotous" - love it 8)

Think I may have to go out and buy this for the first time ever

Thanks Bing, Thanks SweetRide. It was a fun day out.

Also planning to go the Performance BMW Magazine Track day at Brands Hatch on the 25 February. So if there are any fellow Z4-Forum members attending would be good to catch-up.

Its a good read actually. I was really sceptical but its a hell of a lot better written and researched than one of the BMW mags (car I think, can't remember...) Sow a low riding E6 which was just magnificent and hav"e bought the mag a couple of times since. Its interesting to see what poeple do to their cars.

When i first read this post last week i thought well at least somebody is thinking along the the same line as i am regarding an engine transplant into an e89, so today i phoned Manhart Racing in Germany for a ballpark figure on a V10 transplant into my own e89, sit down, ready, 80,000 euros and 500 hours of work. There must be someone uk based that can do this for a more sensible figure, anyone know of any V10 or V8 E89`s.

I spoke to Simpsons a while back about the idea and they said it would be very costly and something they haven't done before.

I will give them a call on monday, if it is too prohibitive cost wise then i`ll look at the supercharger route if that is a possibility, but i have heard somewhere this engine is not suitable for supergharging due to the complex valve gear, don`t no if anyone can correct me on that. But i definately want/need more power, as much as i can get from this engine/ transmission. If not then i will look at changing to the 3.5i/ 35is and go the remap route etc.

Rayz4, how did you get on? I must admit the upgrading to a 35i/35is route and upping the turbo's pressure sounds it would be a cheaper route to get some good performance. Its a shame BMW never made the e89 with the M3 4.0 v8 engine, now that would go, sound and look fab!. Real shame, :-(

Bought the mag today - mostly for the article on your cars, but there's some other good stuff in there too - and really impressed. It was nicely written and even though it featured your M3 in the main, your devotion to your Z4 was clear! Congratulations.

I REALLY like the VMR 710's, dare i say more so than oem CSL's as they have more dish on the fronts and the spokes seem more defined. Do you know how they compare on weight? I googled them and quickly found a pic of a white Z4MC with a set....beautiful.

Yes was surprised how much coverage I got in the mag, LOL. Having the CSL's one's on the Z4M I wanted something a little different. I notice this but the CSL type wheels on the M3 e92 competition edition pack are different to the e46 CSL wheels. Also one of the reasons I went for the VMRs was I wanted more grip at the back. The standard ones are 19x9.5 (265) and I've gone to 19x11 with 305 on the back, LOL. Also having the grey colour on the Z4 I wanted something different. The Hyper silver colour is really nice.

Not sure about the weight differences between the OEM 19's tho.

Spoke to simpsons and although they have not done any E89 transplants they say it could be done but would be so costly it would be prohibitive on that alone, you are talking in the region of 10k for the engine alone plus transmission, electronics, software etc also the 3.0 n/a engine in the current E89 is not suitable for much in the way of big tuning anyway but they were going to contact ESS about supercharging the E89 3.0 n/a engine and as yet no word back from them. It looks like i will have to go the 35i/is route afterall, cheaper option allround really. Having said that the 3.0 E89 is no slouch but for me it really does need a greater input of power especially on take off even in sport+ mode. Hmmm GTR looks tempting. :)
