My poor car!! :(!!

Your insurance has to put you back in the same situation you were in prior to the incident. You bought acar of specific colour and spec. We all chose what we want. Presumably you bought at a premium for that combination and that's what they insured. You expect that, not just any colour and spec that they happen to find lying about in some second hand car sales. So, on that basis they will of course pay to have the one they found done to your colours. Like hell they will - easier to come back with a fair offer so you can get the same spec, mileage and history.

It had really nice wheels too.

Sorry bout the car Andy.

Was the other driver okay?

Actually spoke to the other driver yesterday (71 year old gentleman) when we first went over to the car he was slouched to one side but responded after a little bit and got himself out of the car with assistance.... He spent a night in the hospital then apparently had to return after the bank holiday weekend with complaints of being ill, turns out he had ruptured an ulcer so needed an pop and finally came out in the 13th (accident on the 1st).... So he seems ok, just need recovery time and aggravated an outstanding medical concern (albeit he was unaware)........... He got in touch as he had no memory of the accident so asked if I would explain it to him which I did... So at least he can get closure on it.... Turns out his car is getting repaired (14 plate Vw passat).

Can you accept their offer but keep your car as well as part of the deal?
If you can you could swap out things like the seats for your new car when you find it.
You may even be able to sell on your damaged car as a project and possibly make some money out of it.
The last accident I had in 2009 on my bike was sorted like this.
The assessor asked how much I thought it was worth before the accident, then how much it was worth after the accident, and thats what they gave me.
They paid me the amount I said it was worth minus salvage amount and I kept the bike.
I was then able to sell the damaged bike and bought another better one.
Bikes are obviously different from cars but it might be worth asking, the bike was kept on my property the whole time so this might also have affected the outcome as it would cost them money to transport it elsewhere.

Hi sorry to read about the accident, have you thought about asking them to return your car with the latest offer? Ther must be a good three grands worth of spares in it.
Greig
I see someone else is thinking along the same lines and at the same time

I have considered asking for the car back.... Fresh tyres all round, recent discs/pads etc just as a starter.... But they decided to recover it to one of their salvage yards which just so happens to be 2 hours!!!! Away from me! I was gobsmacked! So can only assume they'd charge an arm and a leg to get it back to me.

You can hire a flat bed transporter for the day for about £100

Cheers shelters I really appreciate that! The middle one is the one 8 miles from me..... But no msport seats! ;)

I did a "wise buyers" check and for the age/mileage it came through as £7,141.... And from the looks of those adds I should be pushing for circa £7k?

At some point you will have to cut your losses.

As others have said try and get the car or at least the seats and wheels along with anything else worth taking.

Upgrade to a 3.0 SI or a Tin lid Coo Pee.

You could always go nuts and get an M.

Just a wild alternative- try to get your car back plus their cash and repair yours- at least you know it's history!

it's not just as simple as getting it back and repaired btw, reinsuring it pending on the write off category can be a ballache , cat.c obviously the worst of the pair , and again forget about selling it on/trading it in if you do

(and if it's a cat a/b write off you can't buy it back anyway)

if more airbags than just the steering wheel one went off as well it's big money to fix in most cars, thats the main cause for a cat.d write off, soon as you say "airbags went off both sides" it's basically game over purely for the amount of the trim they destroy.

I understand this- hence the reason I am repairing mine myself after a minor bump as I feared they might write it off. All depends on the sentimenal attachment to the car and time of intended ownership.

So next call from the insurance company, apparently £6210 is their absolute final offer and then suggested forwarding me details of the FOS if I wanted to take things further.... Which I suggested they did! They also said they will send me that amount as an intermediate payment as the rest of the process will probably drag on! :-/. So now starts the replacement car hunt I guess (once cheque has cleared) as assuming courtesy car will have to go back soon..... I do have a car I can borrow from my dad so I can take time to find the 'right' replacement..... Current thoughts are with a coupe ..... Black with red leather maybe? ;) ...... Think I'd just feel too bitter having another car too similar to my old one after having to pay out more money etc

Morning all!

Weather or not you all fancied an update or not...... So first things first.... Churchill insurance.... USELESS!! My accident was on the 1st April, now the 6th May and no cheque to pay for my "written off" car.... the whole time they are paying for a rental car. Chased them up again today after a call to them last week when they said they would forward things onto the "pay-out" department... turns out nothing has been actioned and seeing as apparently they don't have a contact number for the other department they will have to email them?!??! Crazy!!

Anyways..... my hunt for a replacement car is going very slowly as what they were paying me £6210 is not enough to replace for same spec/condition/service history... So I asked them how much to have my car back (thinking at least i'll have the interior to put in another car/I know all the wheels/tyres/brakes etc are all good and recently fresh)...... they came back with a figure of £1552....... and they confirmed the car is a Cat C........ Fortunately I do have the space/mechanical know-how/tools to strip the car/investigate a repair... So wondering if anyone had any thoughts....? Basically giving me £4658 cash and my car back... to break/repair (time will decide).

The figure I had in my head before the conversation was £1k (as interior/wheels & tyres would easily be worth that) and the rest would just be a matter of time stripping/advertising/selling etc.... I'm fairly close to going for it at £1.5k... but worth bouncing the idea off you guys.... I don't have a huge amount of time at the moment, but I do have a classic car I could MOT and put on the road in the meantime while I take time on the Z4 recouping funds or repairing..... hmmmmmmm....

Personally, i'd be taking the money they've offered and moving on. It's going to suck - i imagine your premium is going to be a shocker now too, your fault or not. If it were me, i'd want to move on and forget about it. It's Cat C, so wont that heavily hinder resale ABILITY (nevermind price?), plus safety? If there's any chassis damage it just becomes a death trap?
