My old zed is dead.

I brought my 2.0 in march 2013 and immediately fell in love with it. It was religously serviced and looked after like a pampered wife, anything it needed it got.

I kept it in the best condition possible and drove it everyday for 12 years, it only failed a few times on me but nothing serious. The worst thing was VVT failure which was sorted immediately then rear brakelines failure which caused the only MOT fail in my ownership.

It also was one of the first zeds to have the roof motor moved to the boot, this was in 2014 and i am proud to say it was me and a bloke in germany that started the whole phenominum, it is documented on this forum back in the day.

When i got it, it had 56 000 on the clock and when i sold it, it had 170 000, not bad for a well looked after 4 potter.

In march of this year i sold it to a work mate and bought myself a Jag XF the only reason was, i started to struggle getting in and out of her, getting on in years etc. So wanted some luxury.

So, this "mate" was driving round in the zed untaxed for 6 months. Now just recently they caught up with him and clamped it then transported it away.
I no longer work there so did not know this untill a few days ago when i was told that the zed has now been CRUSHED!!!!

I am gutted to say the least, if i had known this when it happened i would have paid out for any fines etc just to save her from this fate.

Thanks for reading this, as i have been a member here as long has i owned the zed i thought i would let you know.

Cheers all, tug.

Feel your pain mate. Regardless what people say you build a bond with cars that are in your life and to hear they end up as scrap is gutting

People who see cars as a basic means of getting from A to B. Don’t realise that they can become part of the family. My wife gives names to all the cars we buy.

I never understood why you guys do this in the UK. Seems unusually wasteful and cruel to do. Why not sell it off again at auction for instance to someone who could tax it?

And @tug, sorry to hear man. As others above already mentioned, for some of cars are part of the family.

That's such a shame tug.

It does seem crazily wasteful to crush cars just because an idiot owner won't pay for Road Tax.

Totally agree about auctioning as you describe. It is a ridiculous waste to crush a good roadworthy vehicle because of owner stupidity. The DVLA would benefit from the sale, the new owner would benefit from the sale. And crushing a car... is it dismantled and parts recycled beforehand? I'm curious to know.

It is a strange situation for sure.

Jeez, it's pretty gutting just to read this sorry tale.
I can only imagine the hurt you must feel.

Yes, that is a waste and very annoying to see someone didn’t care at all about your old car.

Thanks all, strange, but its like i am mourning a close friend. I don't blame my mate, he didn't have the connection to it i did.

But yes, the DVLA don't give a toss. My mate is also gutted too to be fair, he knows he was risking it like a lot of others in Leicester.

I did leave all the stuff on her for him like Stormworks knob, handbrake handle. Sony Xplod head unit, active sub in the boot, newly refurbished MV2 alloys, the tyres where only 4 months old all round. When i sold her she did look the bollox to be fair.

I only found out by chance when visiting my old workplace afterwards, like i said i would have paid all the expences to get her back and stored her off road untill he could have got his finances in order if i had known.

I admit ive got a 4 pot but love driving it about. bought it on my 51st birthday and love pottering about doing little jobs on it.

They crushed the car because he didn't pay the Crown for 6 months?! That is pretty extreme, don't ya think? Geez, pay a late fee and move on with your day, but don't destroy the car. Who decided that law was a good idea? In the US, you can drive around for YEARS without paying for a license plate, and when you finally do, they just add fines and late fees, which aren't that much money (less than $75.00 per year for most). When my state used to have annual inspections (which was a joke and only cost $5.00), an expired inspection sticker just got you a fine of $156.00, IF you happened to get stopped by the police. They stopped annual inspections years ago, as the mechanics often didn't actually inspect anything.

As George Carlin used to say, we don't have rights, we have temporary privileges.

Confused... are you saying that was a good thing or a bad thing? Seems like letting people drive around in death traps might be a bad thing?

Here in the states, they don't do any MOT type inspections on cars for safety. They just make you pay to check emissions in more strict states like California and reregister the car biennially. I've seen many cars on completely bald tires, heard cars with metal-metal rotors/pads, missing lug bolts/nuts, and malfunctioning headlights or taillights. If there aren't multiple crashes on the first wet day after summer, something is massively wrong.

Why do we need the nanny state to dictate to us which of our personal property deserves to exist, and literally destroy what the crown deems as unfit? Police here pull over cars that fail to meet road standards, such as one or two headlights or taillights not working at night, and give them a ticket. Worst case, they have it towed. Either of those cases are remedied by paying a fine. At no time is a car destroyed. What if it had been an even more rare car? A McLaren, for example? Some of their models are limited to 106 cars. Is nothing sacred?
