My FOG LIGHT warranty drama...NEW FOGS FITTED

SO - i know that "misty" and "misted" up fog lights on facelift cars are a common issue and i know that various people have had mixed luck with dealers getting them replaced under warranty.

My car is in extended warranty and my claim for this is still under investigation.

BMW said "no" - this is not covered under warranty because the seal has gone and warranty specfically EXCLUDES seals - OK.
I then sent a mail to Mondial Assistance (who the BMW warranty goes through) -

I wrote this - using some words from somebody on here - thanks to that person, sorry i forgot your name!!!

1) 2 x Misted up fog lamps

I advised about both of my fog lamps being misted up recently so they were looked at during the Insp I.
Following the service, they advised this was not a warranty item since the misting up was due to corrosion. Diane went back to you to ask again, but it was refused - hence the need for this email!

Corrosion? Let's look at the problem - a sealed light unit, protected from the elements and not designed to allow the ingress of water etc etc is allowing water in and BMW state this is corrosion! Corrosion is the deterioration of a material due to interaction with its environment - I don't think the fog light was designed to interact with the environment. Based on this, do you think it's normal for a fog light to mist up and where in any BMW manual/service sheet etc it says that this is normal.

They came back with this reply:

Misted fog lamp: If this was due the ‘failure’ of a seal then it would not be covered as they are listed as an exclusion. Corrosion is not listed as an exclusion because it depends what the cause of the corrosion is.

I replied today with this:

My car is going back into BMW Sytner of Sunningdale on the 26th for some other approved warranty work.
Please could you arrange for the Fog Lamps to be reviewed at that time? I am part of an active internet forum exclusively for Z4's and there are many other people who have encountered this very same issue on post face lift BMW Z4s (post 06) and have had the affected items replaced under warranty.

They advised that the warranty company/BMW want to check if its the seal by turning on the fog lamps for 10 minutes to see if the mist goes (this proving the seal is at fault as the mist should go out the way it came in - via the faulty seal) - if this does not work, then the lamps are replaced.

I'll keep you posted with the progress and hopefully if i get a good result - everybody else who has this problem will be able to to use my course of action to get it sorted!

Cheers
Jamie

Yes good lucj Jamie, I had mine both changed just before the 3 years were up without any hassle, and just had 4 x 108's replaced under good will, so anything is possible.

How can they ever claim it is normal? By 17 year old Golf Clipper has the original lights and none of them are leaking or misting.

Yours never get wet though

I did ask the dealer same question when I had the E85. Replacement is only possible under new car warranty, but not used car or extended warranty.

I had the same problem, and the same script with BMW Wollaston Northampton. I was really hacked off as this is just not acceptable and I've seen so many Z4's with misted fogs that it's clearly an issue (along with springs, which I've had go on both Z4's I've had). I called BMW customer services direct, had a bit of moan, said I'd had 5 BM's including 2 Zeds - they logged the complaint and recommended that the dealer submit a "goodwill claim" form for the fog lamp. Dealer promptly did this and were authrorised by BMW to replace under warranty, although, apparently, the approved used BMW warranty isn't quite as extensive as the new BMW warranty (they never tell you about the small print do they?). BMW should be consistent on this. Anyway - take the initiative (as the dealer won't!) and give BMW customer services a call

Good luck

Hizza that is a good point, I mentioned to my dealer that if they had no luck with the wheels I was going to contact BMW UK. I think at the end of the day they would rather do that than me so gives them more on an incentive to get it sorted and less black marks from BMW.

I thought it was a well-known fact that the there was less cover with AUC & Insured warranties than with the New Car one.

The levels, with corresponding stars for the amount of cover they provide) are:
  • New Car Warranty (*****)
  • Approved Used Warranty (****)
  • Comprehensive Insured Warranty (***)
  • Named Component Insured Warranty (**)
  • Driveline Insured Warranty (*)

Whooooo hoooo. Car going in tomorrow for new fog lights under extended warranty.

This forum made that happen!!!

Quite chuffed with this actually.
Couple of emails with Modial Assistance and the next thing i know BMW is calling me to say its been approved....i shall wait for the proof and then post up what others in my situation need to say to get the same :)
