My FOG LIGHT warranty drama...NEW FOGS FITTED

Hi All,

I know this is an old post, but I now have this issue an I am being given the run around by BMW UK and the Dealer.

Can you confirm which warranty you have? You mentioned Extended Warranty. By this so you mean the Approved Used Warranty scheme? This is the one I have and both the dealer and BMW UK are stating that they are not covered due to seals... etc, however, the condensation remains, even if I keep the lights on for an extended period of time.

BMW warranty

Just use this wording:

Corrosion? Let's look at the problem - a sealed light unit, protected from the elements and not designed to allow the ingress of water etc etc is allowing water in and BMW state this is corrosion! Corrosion is the deterioration of a material due to interaction with its environment - I don't think the fog light was designed to interact with the environment. Based on this, do you think it's normal for a fog light to mist up and where in any BMW manual/service sheet etc it says that this is normal.

They came back with this reply:

Misted fog lamp: If this was due the ‘failure’ of a seal then it would not be covered as they are listed as an exclusion. Corrosion is not listed as an exclusion because it depends what the cause of the corrosion is.

I replied today with this:

My car is going back into BMW Sytner of Sunningdale on the 26th for some other approved warranty work.
Please could you arrange for the Fog Lamps to be reviewed at that time? I am part of an active internet forum exclusively for Z4's and there are many other people who have encountered this very same issue on post face lift BMW Z4s (post 06) and have had the affected items replaced under warranty.

They advised that the warranty company/BMW want to check if its the seal by turning on the fog lamps for 10 minutes to see if the mist goes (this proving the seal is at fault as the mist should go out the way it came in - via the faulty seal) - if this does not work, then the lamps are replaced.

I had both mine replaced at just under three years old under manufacturers warranty. If your car is AUC but over three years old your only luck would be good will. Extended warranty also will not cover, but again good will may.

Good luck.

Mine was extended warranty and they said nothing about good will to me - they simply could not argue with my evidence!

Guys,

I've just split a pair of fog lamps (taken the lens off the metal body) that failed due to a "failed seal" and I can tell you for almost certainty that it is not the seal that has failed. It is due to corrosion.

In the channel where the lens sits and is sealed/glued to the body the seal had come away from the body as the slivering had peeled from the body. The seal (+ silvering) was still attached to the lens.

If it was seal failure the the seal would have come away from either the lens or the silver.

Also, these units are not hermetically sealed. So turning the lights on to de-mist them and thus proving seal failure is nonsense. If you look at a unit there is a round plug. This covers a hole that goes into the body to allow venting of moisture. You can pop the plug out or pop the top off it. You can see small gaps around its edge. Pop the top off and you'll see mesh to stop big bits of crud entering.

So it's corrosion for sure. The silvering is failing for some reason. The corrosion is the getting stuck in making it worse.

Only the dealer knows if this was done under warranty then. I agree with you though regarding the evidence, as I feel this is why my wheels have been replaced twice, once out of manufacturers warranty as I am able to provide information that doesn't really give them a leg to stand on.

I tried this route with my 08 Coupe with my fully comp warranty.

They just replied back saying that the gradual deteriation is not covered and is listed in the excusions. Sure enough, it is.... it was worth a try.

I am tempted to complain that other customers have been treated differently, however I doubt it is worth the effort.

These rectangular post facelift fog lamps are crap. It's either a design/manufacturing fault. I bet no round pre facelift lights have failed in the same manner. My round fogs on my Series I car are in A1 condition.

Mine fog up bad too. I might mention it when the car is next in but I doubt it will get me anywhere.
