My First Zed Thread (2003 E85 3.0)

Turns out the airbag light was on for the left hand side, so whatever I did it was during the first membrane replacement and not the second (didn't drive the car between, so wouldn't have noticed the light if on).

2 mins with Inpa and now turned off again.

Gaptech also functioning normally again - odd :-|

Here's the real mystery. There were a number of scratch marks on the inside of the door skin, but also a small area of metal that had clearly been cut from one of the reinforcing sections next to the outer skin - leaving some sharp metal flaps folded in towards the car. And get this, someone has written 'oops' in marker pen just by it. WTF??

I folded the sharp bits in as best I could, this photo is looking into the door through the hole where the airbag sits:

Sound deadening added, seemed to be a bit easier today and used more 'complete' sheets without jigsaw puzzle cutting, even remembered to take an 'after' photo :)

So now have 2 doors that shut with a resounding CLUNK, just like a Golf :rofl:

Hello Tim.
What thickness and total coverage of the 30 sheets were? Doing the doors with sound deadening is something that ive half heartedly been wanting to do for a long while, but been put off by laziness and the uncertainty of being worth the hassle. I see you're very happy with it. If i eventuality decide to go for it, while I'm at it i might add the 4" door speakers and a pair of 6" x 8" speakers in the rear bulkhead cubby holes, which id probably line with the sound deadening material. Thus, the question about total coverage of your 30 sheets.

The sheets I used were 2mm thick. Have a look at the 2nd post back on page 1 of this thread and you'll find the exact product I used with dimensions (silent coat), of which I had 7 sheets remaining (and was by no means careful with minimising waste).

If you think of the inside of the door as a rectangle, I covered the largest back section pretty much completely (there is a ridge of metal at the top - up to this), then the bottom, left and right sides as much as was practical while still being able to use reasonably big pieces; so there are a fair few small patches inside which are NOT covered, but it would have a) taken ages and b) been very fiddly to get it perfect.

I also overlapped pieces quite often - not by design, just because it was far quicker and meant I didn't have to worry about creating an exact jigsaw puzzle. If anything, having some overlapped areas (which are hence 4mm rather than 2mm) is probably a good thing.

I was also pleased to see everything is still perfectly in place when I had the 2 door cards off this week - great product.

Definitely recommend it - Wonkydonkey recommended it to me and he was 100% right. Cheap to do, just takes some time, lovely result you see/hear every drive.

I'm tempted to update the door speakers too (already have the subs fitted behind the seat). Door card removal is easy by following the video - I could have one off in 2 minutes now I think :D
 
Had an airbag warning light pop up out of the blue, the day after finishing the 2nd door membrane so assumed I'd disturbed something.

Having read the code with Inpa (which would re-appear after removing every time the car was started) it gave error: 98E0 Resistance,firing circuit,belt tensioner,front right,too high.

Removed the driver's seat today, gave all connections (including those to the pretensioner as the error message seems to indicate has the fault) a good clean and blow, put everything back together, clear the fault once more and it is now staying off - including after a 40 mile drive. Not the best result as it means there is probably some dodgy wiring somewhere but at least the light is off for now.

The car is bone dry inside after a fair amount of rain since doing the membranes, so hopefully that has cracked it - although I'll wait until actually using the car in heavy rain to declare success.

Also managed to pick up another black, MP3 compatible head unit from an X3 on Ebay for £80 and swapped that over today - so the car is now pretty much perfect, with no lights and nothing broken - for now :D

I also had a slight leak in my drivers side and thanks to this post I realised it was being caused by water running down the inside of the membrane and dripping through an area where it wasn’t properly secured with that horrible black beutyl stuff

After smearing more of it around and creating a proper seal it seems to have done the job

Yes as long as your membrane is intact, the butyl stuff is so sticky you should be able to restick it (either to itself or back to the door) and create a watertight seal. Hope your leak is sorted!

It's quite clever actually. It pairs with your phone as a standard headset, which means you can skip tracks (e. g forward or back) using steering wheel controls or head unit controls, as long as whatever app you're playing music from supports it. I use 'Amazon music' on my phone which works perfectly, also gives you the benefit of voice control through Alex's.

Only complaint so far is that the Bluetooth connection drops if no sound is sent through for a while - so if using Google maps for example, and you're on the motorway for a while (so hence no instructions being read out) with no music playing, the connection can drop and the head unit will switch to another input like the radio, which makes me jump! I think the answer will be to download a long, silent MP3 and play that if using maps - haven't tried yet though.

For the price I'd definitely recommend it.
 
Yes that's the one, lovely lady she is too - got a load of grief on FB due to the wheels and grille, some real tools on the various FB Z4 groups unfortunately in amoungst the normal people.
 
Just want to say thanks Tommy, like you I have a DSP system, I like it a lot, it does everything I need apart from Bluetooth music. After reading your thread about the adapter, which I had already dismissed as it says NOT FOR DSP SYSTEMS, I looked at your picture and wondered if I have the same connections in my cd changer, oooww look it's the same!!! Amazon sprang to life, primed it, next day fitted it....happy bunny.....so thanks Tommy you're a star! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Yes I found that whole DSP thing confusing too - I think my conclusion after some helpful comments from other members, is that if you have the DSP amplifier fitted then depending on the year of your car you will either have the 6+2 connector for your CD changer (as we both have and needed for that Amazon bluetooth adapter) on earlier cars, or the Co-Axial connector (which is not compatible with the Amazon adapter without adding e.g. an additional DSP decoder box) on later cars.

As you say, the best bet for anyone thinking about buying that adapter is to get in the boot and have a look at the connector (worth checking the original options on your car beforehand to double check the CD changer wiring will be there) - not difficult to do, just a few trim fasteners to come off and the vertical boot carpet can be pulled towards you to give enough room to have a root around with a torch. I know some people (without a CD changer fitted, like me) have struggled to find the connector but mine was just sitting there waiting for me.

Glad you're pleased with the adapter - for the price it's very good.

ZHP, Z4M wheel, cruise control, facelift stereo/vent, euro rear light and Gaptech now removed - everything else will remain on the car.

Removed my private reg and added some fresh plates with the updated registration - a clean later and it will now be tucked away in the garage ready for a new owner (which I think has now been found :()
