My Brake Debacle

Ok so recently September 2012 I bought a complete brake disc kit from MTEC and BMW oem handbrake shoes as I though the Z could do with some sprucing up. I took it to my local garage Whitwell service station who appear to have be servicing my wife's 3 series without any major issues so I trusted them.

Anyway I called him at 3pm and he said 'were just fitting your tyres, will call you when were finished' He said they had already done all of the brake work. pm I call him to be told they have an issue with the handbrake adjustment, so I go down and they don't have the tool to do the adjustment which also means they never released it before they went ahead and replaced the shoes. So without much thought about this I then had to go to Sytner BMW in Sheffield to have the handbrake adjusted.

Roll forward 4-5 months and I notice a ticking sound when slowing down to a crawling speed, so I take the rear passenger wheel off and the disc and this is what I'm presented with:

On first view it looked like the garage had only done one shoe so I went back to them and they denied and then said that I should have known about it as this would have shown in some way. I asked what would be the symptoms and he could not specify so I asked if you cant how would I?

Anyway I went to BMW to ask if there was any recourse from them as they did the final adjustment and they said it was probably down to the fact the original garage did not use the correct procedure. So after 2 days without the car I have parted with £665 to Sytner BMW new discs/pads/shoes/handbrake cables as one had dried up and I thought it best to replace, 4 new exhaust studs and exhaust flange as you have to remove the exhaust to do the cables apparently.

Original garage have washed their hands and needless to say pissed about that but finding it hard to prove.

Feel better for getting off my chest now though. Watch who you get to do your work, I was lucky had the disc failed it could have been fatal

Were the shoes binding on the side where the disc has cracked? I'd be tempted to send your pic to the disc manufacturer as it could be argued the disc has failed. I'd have assumed you'd have noticed a binding disc...

Not good the fact the disc was cracking so soon, would look to supplier/manufacturer to refund your money.
Used mtec once on my prev z4,and wasnt too impressed...sent wrong parts which they refused to refund as was told the rear pads for an e39 5ser(as suppplied to me)were siutable for a 2005 3.0 z4...which they obviously are not!!
Push for full refund from them,as parts shouldnt fail that soon

Also goes to show you should always choose a good indy if not using a dealer/as i too had this problem with a local garage not doing handbrake shoes correctly, and had to get put right(again due to the garage not having the right adj tools)..i ended up taking to a good bmw indy which fixed it for me(again, this was my prev z4).
Hope u get some £ back.

Not good. I have used mtec dics on my last few bm's with no problems. Fitted them last year to my z4 again with no problems. Just got a price from them for my 335d & again thinking of fitting them. By the look of the pics the handbrake shoes on one side have not been adjusted properly. Did you not feel the car binding ? For the shoes to rub away as bad as that the haet could have caused the problem with the disc. Would contact them & show them a pic of the disc only ! Show them the hanbrake pads & i think i know what there answer will be. Good luck, but i think the problems been the fitting of the handbrake shoes & there adjustment.

Well guess wat I found today my wife's 3 series has exactly the same issue, all servicing done by the same garage
Gonba seek advice from citizens advice cause so far we are looking at about £1.2K between us to rectify. Sytnera wanted £850 to fix an she declined

Just picked my car up from my new Indy Swifts performance who was looking at another issue with coolant loss paid £253 which seemed good an the service was excellent. Anyway he quoted £380 for the same work sty era quoted £850 so guess he is getting more work from us
