Ok so recently September 2012 I bought a complete brake disc kit from MTEC and BMW oem handbrake shoes as I though the Z could do with some sprucing up. I took it to my local garage Whitwell service station who appear to have be servicing my wife's 3 series without any major issues so I trusted them.
Anyway I called him at 3pm and he said 'were just fitting your tyres, will call you when were finished' He said they had already done all of the brake work. pm I call him to be told they have an issue with the handbrake adjustment, so I go down and they don't have the tool to do the adjustment which also means they never released it before they went ahead and replaced the shoes. So without much thought about this I then had to go to Sytner BMW in Sheffield to have the handbrake adjusted.
Roll forward 4-5 months and I notice a ticking sound when slowing down to a crawling speed, so I take the rear passenger wheel off and the disc and this is what I'm presented with:

Driver Side:
On first view it looked like the garage had only done one shoe so I went back to them and they denied and then said that I should have known about it as this would have shown in some way. I asked what would be the symptoms and he could not specify so I asked if you cant how would I?
Anyway I went to BMW to ask if there was any recourse from them as they did the final adjustment and they said it was probably down to the fact the original garage did not use the correct procedure. So after 2 days without the car I have parted with £665 to Sytner BMW new discs/pads/shoes/handbrake cables as one had dried up and I thought it best to replace, 4 new exhaust studs and exhaust flange as you have to remove the exhaust to do the cables apparently.
Original garage have washed their hands and needless to say pissed about that but finding it hard to prove.
Feel better for getting off my chest now though. Watch who you get to do your work, I was lucky had the disc failed it could have been fatal
