My 20i M Sport

Hey guys - I've been a member of the forum for a few years and mostly just reading up til now. In October bought a 2012 E89 20i M Sport to replace my 2007 E85 2.0i Sport (when I get round to selling it - PM me if you're looking for one!).

(plate obscured as its the previous owners)

I have a few ambitions for modding it, but I'm a newbie to modding so need some guidance from you pros! I'd like to:

  • Wrap the lower bar on the front bumper in black
  • Wrap/paint the rear valance in black
  • Maybe wrap the wing mirror covers in black
  • Tint all of the windows
  • Polish off the tail pipes down to their chrome layer
  • Lower the car to get the stance looking just right so that the wheel arches are nicely filled
  • Swap the grills for full black grill (either de-chrome or new all-black grill)
  • Upgrade Angel Eyes to pure white, either LUX or eBay job - looking at the can bus 120w bulbs
  • Paint brake callipers (Red I think to match interior)
  • Front and side splitters a la M Performance Style/3D Design style

So a few questions:

  • What sort of cost am I looking at for wrapping the front bumper and back bumper and wing mirrors, or would you recommend wrapping or plasti-dip or painting them myself? Anyone been to TLC Detailing in Stirling?
  • Anyone got the Canbus 120w led angel eye bulbs off eBay? How do you find them? reliable?

and mostly:

My biggest aim is to swap the 18" 325m alloys for something bigger and more aggressive, and get non-run-flats. I've looked at a lot of different wheels (such as veeman vfs24s - mrwilks' look so good, 326m, AVA Memphis, and 313ms), and though I wanted 326ms when I shopped around, but I think I'd like a set of M437s or replicas (since OEM is so expensive). They look really awesome on this Z that I saw on zpost:

What tyre sizes should I be looking at? I've tried to search the internet for clues but I'm a bit stumped as it seems to vary car to car and people seem to have mixed issues with rubbing on the wheel arches.

Also, I know it sounds stupid, but if I bought a set of alloys where would I get them fitted since I can't do them myself (which a lot of you seem to do). Just any garage? Kwik Fit?

I've also looked into stances on here but you all have such strong and varied opinions on what stance even means, so its hard to decipher how to get the right look for my wheels. If I look at the current 18" wheels, I'd like the rears to sit wider than they do currently. Fronts I think are ok.

Sorry for the long post and lots of questions, but I figure you all seem to know a lot about all of this so would be a great help!

Hi BeardyJon. Always liked 'em in white.

There are quite a few sites with wheel / tyre comparison info. Try this, although it does take a while to get your head around offsets (ET's) if you've not looked at it seriously before. http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-Size-Calculator/255-30R19/265-30R19/275-30R19

Just put your own numbers in.

Nice white and red colour combo
I wouldn't be bothering wrapping parts of it, however swapping out the alloys will really improve the look / stance of the car imo

Get the wheels right before choosing whether to drop or not . The E89 has large wings / arches & easily takes 19s & in my experience is no detriment to ride quality of you get the tyres right .
Blacking out body parts ? Personal choice I guess & again I would add wheels first before deciding .
Bulb upgrade is a winner & I went with the £20 ones Kugaman linked on other threads. Work a treat & easy to fit yourself .
Wheelchoice ? So many to choose from  scope through www.cmwheels.com looking through 3 series E90 for bigger choice .
I'm sure wherever you had tyres fitted they would change wheels over for you but maybe consider spending £30/ £40 on a wheelbrace & trolleyjack .

Nice change  Obviously opinions vary a fair bit but I like the way colour change changes the look. Wrap costs change depending on company, here is just bog standard idea - https://www.3domwraps.com/car-wrapping/car-wrapping-price-guide-uk/ I got a quote to redo all my current bits (in and out) and was £300. The look of mine with bits wrapped :) Z 7.jpg

Good choice with the white E89!

I’ve done a lot of what you want to do / about to do it, I think it makes a big difference!

  • Wrap the lower bar on the front bumper in black
(see pics below)
  • Wrap/paint the rear valance in black
(having this done next week)
  • Maybe wrap the wing mirror covers in black
(not sure about this - too much?)
  • Tint all of the windows
(I’ve thought about this but not 100% sure)
  • Polish off the tail pipes down to their chrome layer
(I really need to sort my tips out so good choice!)
  • Lower the car to get the stance looking just right so that the wheel arches are nicely filled
(tough one this. It’s one of my big bears as the Eibach kit doesn’t lower the front enough but the H&R kit lowers the rear too much. I have Eibachs and I have some rear spring perches to fit which I hope will get the stance just right).
  • Swap the grills for full black grill (either de-chrome or new all-black grill)
(massive improvement imo).
  • Upgrade Angel Eyes to pure white, either LUX or eBay job - looking at the can bus 120w bulbs
( mines a facelift so has white angel eyes)
  • Paint brake callipers (Red I think to match interior)
(on my list as well although I think I’ll go with Gloss Black maybe with a White carrier?)
  • Front and side splitters a la M Performance Style/3D Design style
(I’ve had a front splitter designed and produced and will be having side skirts done too - Splitter will be ready in a few weeks!)

  • What sort of cost am I looking at for wrapping the front bumper and back bumper and wing mirrors, or would you recommend wrapping or plasti-dip or painting them myself? Anyone been to TLC Detailing in Stirling?

£60-100 ish for front bumper. Not sure on rear bumper - my cousin does it for Venom Wraps so he’s doing mine.

They look great!!

Depends on widths of Wheels. I run 235/35 and 255/35 on a 9j and 10j. I’ll be going up a width on both next time round I think.

Also, I know it sounds stupid, but if I bought a set of alloys where would I get them fitted since I can't do them myself (which a lot of you seem to do). Just any garage? Kwik Fit?

Kwik Fit won’t apparently! But yes, any other garage will swap wheels over for you.

On my OEM Wheels I put 12mm spacers on the rear

Cheers guys!

Marekdawg / SteveSmith, love the motors! Especially love the black roll bar covers and from bumper on yours Steve.

I got the eBay LED halo bulbs and fitted them. They look brilliant. And at 10% of the cost of Lux bulbs I'm very happy with the result:

IMG_3595.jpg

Has anyone ever swapped the front indicator bulbs for LEDs too? Would be interested in finding some to finish off the look.

Ok well I took a punt and bought some LED bulbs for my front indicators, but doing some research, they're likely to flicker every 2-3mins when the OBC does it's cold checks on the bulbs.

Had a look at Carly and it looks like there's a setting to set the bulbs as LEDs. Am I right in assuming this will stop the cold checks on the bulbs?

If so, is there anyone in the Edinburgh area who has Carly and would be willing to help me code the car?

Can I run the 235/35 and 255/35 tyre size on my standard 326 wheels, that's what I've been considering when I change to non runflats in spring.

Yes, that’s exactly what I had on my 326’s  265/30 on the rear would also work with the 235/35 front.

Has anyone ever fitted the 35is rear diffuser to another M Sport?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Z4-E89-M-Sport-Rear-Bumper-Trim-Diffuser-Nozzle-Bottom-JS/263159249748?_trkparms=pageci%3A7c07e537-123c-11e8-935a-74dbd1806af7%7Cparentrq%3A990c183b1610a9c510ecf405fff9f773%7Ciid%3A1&_trksid=p2481888.c100678.m3607

I'm considering buying this, spraying it Alpine White and fitting it to my existing diffuser.

I've seen other variations that you can stick on with 3M Vehicle tape but I'd rather an OEM one if I can get it to fit.

Not sure it would sit right if the insert valance isn't a 35is one :?

Looking at it I also think you need the valance panel, unless you're going to get into some experimental cutting and filling.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Z4-E89-35i-Performance-Rear-Diffuser-Primed-51122158323-Germany-Genuine-New/301671474941?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

This looks like the package, but it's a bit more expensive.

Hmmm getting the 35is valance too would mean the exhaust cutouts aren't right. Maybe I'll look for a non-or alternative.

Been a while but I’ve recently made progress modding my Z.

I wrapped the dash trim in black carbon and traded the start button for a red one.

Next on the list is an M Performance diffuser which I need to get painted and fitted, and a carbon spoiler. That’s all I’ve got for now.
