Mr12volt - coding cdc?

I’ve joined the herd & ordered a mr12volt to get CarPlay integrated, being delivered in a few days.

My car has no CD changer, so this will need coding.

Anyone know how to do this with bimmercode?

Headunit -> Expert Mode -> 3000 HMI
Find CDMM_CHANGER_3 option and change it to mp3_cdc
CODE -> START CODING

Just because you don't actually have a physical CDC doesn't mean you don't have CDC Prep.
You need to check your VO to see what options you have. You would be looking for 694 (CDC, which say you don't have) or 672 (CDC Prep).
If neither are there then you need to add 672 to your VO and code to CAS, NFRM & CIC. But as I don't use Bimmercode alas I don't know if you can, otherwise its with NCSExpert and a laptop.

Just had a look in the car with the bimmercode on my phone, the cdmm_changer3 option is there & i can change it to MP3.

So looks like no computer needed (at least in my case). Maybe the newer z4 models are good to go with the mr12volt.

Will report back once fitted.

The headunit needs to know that the CDC option is there. The CDMM change to mp3 is so that it can read mp3's,but it still needs to know where to look.

I have the computer setup & ready just in case - not expecting the mr12volt until the weekend, so will update after fitting.

Expecting some fun & games.

I’ve put off the install for a couple of weeks till we get some nicer weather.

While I wait, I’ve got a small concern that someone here may be able to help with?

The cd changer was an option on pre LCI cars. But not available on the newer vehicles, mine is a 2016.

So no cd changer, no cd changer prep - you just don’t have one.

Am I screwed here? Has anyone installed a mr12volt into a post LCI z4?

The Vehicle Order lists all the equipment on board the car…you can add or remove items to the VO without necessarily either having the hardware there or in the case of removing something from the VO without removing the said hardware.

Technically a LCI car is identical to a pre LCI car from a logic / hardware perspective..in fact most hardware changes had no correlation to the LCI change.

So..probably your car will already have the CD changer prep coded into the VO or failing that you add that to the VO

So to answer your question yes it should work…you may have to fart with the VO coding..or you may not have to..

It will become apps when you connect the box up..if you go to CDs you should see a CD1 Mr 12 Volt there

Carplay is in - no coding needed.

Trickiest part was routing all the wires nicely TBH, placed the unit behind the aircon controls similar to how others have done it.

The pain in the arse wire is the one from the drive controller through to the mr12volt. Good tip is to buy a 3ft ziptie from Amazon & use that to get the wire pulled through.

2 hours from start to finish - feeling quite pleased with my efforts :)

Nice one 👍 did you have any issues with the initial startup of the unit or did everything work first time, I had an issue of it not working initially but after an hour of disconnecting/reconnecting/checking coding and several restarts everything now works well, one other issue I had was with the YouTube music app, it launched but wouldn’t do anything and no response from the idrive controller, the only way I could get out of it was by pressing the side button on my iPhone which activated the voice command and then the idrive would let me select settings and do a factory reset, I’ve now deleted the app from my phone, in hindsight perhaps if I’d simply removed the app and then reconnected car play it would have resolved the issue.
I’m really impressed with the unit though and it’s great to have Google maps on the idrive screen.

It does have some bugs when handing over / switching between inputs and between CarPlay and native bmw mode but I’m very pleased with the user interface and capabilities..brings the E89 up to date ish without looking tacky / bolt on

Only thing that foxed me for a few minutes was how to switch into CarPlay mode (you press the volume control the head unit).

I didn’t get any sound coming through until I went to the BMW standard radio & played something - after that perfect.

Otherwise after watching a few videos on YouTube it was pretty straightforward.

With regards to coding for the cd changer, my 2016 car doesn’t even have this option. There is no mention of the changer or the prep on the VO. But it worked anyways.

I did just code the SVS to get Siri working from the steering wheel controls.

Just realised that the large dash piece you remove for the aircon controls isn’t clipped in right at the vent on the passenger side - will sort that tomorrow.

Turns out that that it being wireless is pretty much bollox though - battery drain of about 20% an hour on my iphone 12 pro max. 2hrs trip to work (same coming back) would be a battery killer - so cable it is. Fine being wireless on the short trips - but a decent run needs the cable connected I reckon.

My discovery after the drive into work is that you cannot use the USB connector in the armrest to charge the phone - it connects up to the data bus & mutes the CarPlay audio :)

Just ordered one of those cig lighter usb adapters so i can charge & hear music at the same time :)

Getting there slowly!

Or you don't use wireless and plug it in

I built this purpose made dock for my Samsung phone. Its a desk holder, that has been cut down flat, then a sheet of perspex (to match the height) and the rubber mat on top. It's nice and firm, so I can just plug my phone in, shut the armrest and away you go :driving:

I can appreciate the tictacs:)

But not a fan of the modded phone holder, i change phone too often & don’t want to be tied down to my choices that way.

Happy with the adapter i found on Amazon & like to keep the fone in my pocket for the short trips, will only use the cable for my one big journey a week.

Pleased with the performance of the mr12volt today :) feels like the future.

I appreciate its not for everyone, but it is USB-C so the majority of current Android phones would work and fit nicely and there is a Apple version of the same bracket, although I just use a USB-C to Lightening adaptor for my wife's iPhone.
I like the wired as opposed to wireless because you are still keeping the charge on the phone, especially on longer trips. And no messing with cables as I can do this with one hand.

At the end of the day, it was just an idea I trialled for a year or so with a mock-up version before I ripped into building the proper version, just to make sure I liked it and it worked.

And there's always either TicTacs or a tin of Aldi mints there somewhere :D

I’ve gone for the flying lead with enough slack to be able to pick it up whilst still connected if I need to do something CarPlay doesn’t allow..obviously whilst parked

I’m an apple bigot so gone with a lightning connector..I know at sometime they will do usb c but I’ll cross that bridge later..
