Motoring questions you've always wanted answering

Anyone have any questions they have always wanted answering?

I will start this off...

Q. How fast can a car go in a reverse gear? Say for example, an auto.

Also depends on whether it's a single reverse gear or a gear that reverses the whole gearbox.

In all the cars I've had, it seems to be about half way between what you'd get in 1st/2nd gear, but backwards).

Heres mine
When rolling down a steep hill - even with the engine (fuel deliver) limiter cutting in - would a manual car in 1st gear destroy the engine or would the engine braking effectively prevent this?

IMO, if the hill was steep enough that the free-wheeling velocity, after allowing for the engine breaking effect, over-revved the engine in 1st gear then, yes, you could do some serious damage

I guess the same as down shifting and over revving the engine?

Q. How do little old ladies see the road through the slot-like gap between the top of the steering wheel and the top of the dash?

It's maybe the same as some people can't see the end of their car, and just need to make sure there are no cars around them.....find a very short person and ask them!!

Q. Why is undertaking an offence in this country but not in others....is it justifiably as offence?
A. Because that's what the law says in this country.

And whoever`s idea it was either doesn't drive or just likes increasing congestion as it works so well every where else yet we have to make things more difficult for some reason.

Q. Not all of us need tyres changing all at once, ie all 4. But when some want to change from run flats to non run flats, what would be the problem with say two run flats to the front two normal tyres to the rear?

Q1. Why do certain people - especially on motorways - not understand to keep left when not overtaking?
[if they did there would be no need to try an undertake] 8)

There are certain circumstances when you can legally pass vehicles on the left on a Motorway providing you don't change lanes in order to do so.

If say the person in the middle lane is driving ridiculously slow, or you are coming off at a junction to the left and the other lanes are driving slower.....

Check out paragraph 268
Which, for you lazy barstewards says

"Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake." [p.s. my bold :) ]

But if the pr*ts in lane 2 moved to lane 1 there would be no problem
