Monkey mans power adder

It was also handy to see if it was going to fit. As I will eventually be using a flaper valve to feed my new plenum.

At the moment off boost the engine breathes through the intercooler a long length of pipe and then the turbo. The idea of the flaper valve is so off boost it would breath as normal. As soon as boost goes above atmospheric it closes the valve. And the turbo dose it’s job. Simples!

I may also try and play around with a rudernentry antilag system. First used on way old turbo rally cars. Where I would have an additional TB that closes off the feed to the compressor allowing the compressor to spin freer/quicker off throttle.

FI on these cars is a nightmare..... z4m included... they are all a nightmare. Well done for keeping going at this!

It’s all starting to sound a bit more complicated mate! :?

Yeah this is planing for the next stage and optmising things. Not just getting a decent number on the power torque front like now. But making it a refined and powerful car.

Never giving up on this. It’s my forever car. I have many many plans for it down the line.

I am also nodding an oil pump in the usual way. Unless I have a better idea?! It’s a know week link on the m54 especially if driven hard often at high RPM. The Center bolt that holds the drive cog on vibrates loose. And well your engine eats itself!

I am also talking to a local company about harmonic damping as that’s the route cause of the issue. And I want to raise the rev limit ideally somewhere near 7k rpm

Has the centernut on your oil pump shaft been unwound? (indeed that can happen, I know of 2 people personally that have had that problem)
I've replaced mine with a nut that has a locking wire (aircraft style  )

Do you have your oilpump dismanteled from your car right now?
If so, could you screw out the oil pressure piston and post a picture? (its held in with a lock ring on the side)
On the s54 its a wear item but I wonder to what extent that goes for the m54.

The oil pressure piston is #12 in the diagram:

I brought a second hand oil pump. I have no idea of millage on it? But yes I can do that and post the picture.

I haven’t had a problem. But my best mate Chris has just last weekend had this happen to his car. It’s been used as a track drift car. But he was driving on road not crazy when it went. I think i will be making a new shaft and using 3 bolts and dowels i may then braze not weld the bolts and dowels.

Also the harmonic damper needs looking at as its vibration that’s causing this. And i just have a feeling the BMW idem isn’t up to the job. And especially on higher horsepower cars that will be driven hard.

Yes looks pretty good from what I can see.

With the s54 this is somehow a wear item. Maybe because of the different rpm range or maybe slight difference in design, materials or sizes.
They can look like this:

But I havent seen any M54 pistons that looked like this (but that can be because this is not normally an item that is inspected, you can hardly find any pictures of used ones so its difficult to get an overview of this)

I will be doing my oil pump. And I will remove the oil pump from my mates toasted m54 and his new engine. I will know millage in all of them. We can then start to build up a picture. See if there is any ware to find out if it’s an issue?

This oil pump issue is one thing that's always in the back of my mind as something to have checked/replaced. Will be interesting to see what you do. Will it be along the lines of the upgraded oil pump.......(GSR??)

Got a link? I suspect it is similar there have been loads of people do various different things. I will have a spare oil pump at the end of this I can make you one up if you like? In return for you old oil pump and beer tokens my way?

Very much like this idea. I'll hunt a link out for the pump when Im not at work, everything gets censored in this place!!

This is a late night for me. I have to be up at 5.30! But I have been out in my car! Amazing so much fun!

The steering conversion is great!
The turbo noises are are as addictive as crack!! Good knows what I will be like when I actually have boost!!

Night night all
