Model shoot from the weekend

You could have at least got her to wear some soft white gloves to protect your bonnet :P

I've been thinkin of doing something along those lines actually as a bit of a side business. Who doesn't want pictures of their cars with a good looking girl over it :P

Hehe.. Not sure I'd pay though unless I got the model in the deal too.. lol

Must admit ive done something similar with my own beautiful girl and camera a few times.. oh but that doesn't involve the car and I probably shouldn't be talking about that here.. :tumbleweed:

Well If i ever need some shots for a portfolio I'll be in touch :P

An Imola Red Z4M would be just the ticket

Is it permissible to do a photoshoot like this without having a camera? :D I've got most mods done to my Zed, but this is one accessory I need to put on the wish list.

On a more serious note I'd love to be able to do more and better pictures. I have an eye for what works, but not the right equipment, nor skill to make the shots work.

Practice makes perfect...

A good SLR and a few nice lenses don't cost THAT much. Just get some nice 2nd hand gear off eBay. Nice 20D and some lenses, a few off-camera flashes and maybe a remote trigger and an ok tripod would be easy for £1000.

Don't worry about having half-naked ladies in your photos either, good skills/principles well understood will cross-over in time... and as always, a great camera/setup doesn't always make a great image. Some of the best photos are taken on relatively poor equipment but are done very very well, so don't be put off just getting a good compact and thinking about composition and atmosphere more, as they are key components you have to find and/or wait for, or just stumble upon all of a sudden!

My outdoor shots were just done with a digital SLR and metz flash gun attatched to the camera.

Admittedly the camera was a £5000ish Canon Eos 1ds Mk III with a £600ish flash (IIRC), bt it just goes to show that the perfect kit doesn't always produce the best pictures. I was a little out of my depth when it came to these outdoor shots with bright sunshine as its not something Ive done before. If your just using the camera for the odd shot then a Canon eos 1000D for £350ish from ARGOS is the cheapest deal around and should be plenty good enough for you.

Ive never taken any stand alone lights outside and Ive happily got on just fine using only a camera and a tripod.

As much as I think photoshop is overused and people should learn to take better photographs rather than relying on photoshop.... It does help to be fairly handy with it as it can get you out of some tricky situations.

Nice points there Tommo.. one thing people often miss is the fact that a flash can be a very useful tool, especially in bright sunlight. People tend to think that sunlight means no flash... not always :D

Thanks for the pointers guys  £1k of equipment sounds a lot, but £5k+ ouch. You need to be a keen photographer or pro to justify that.

For now I'd best focus on modding and driving and then get someone to photo it when done.

Sunlight can ruin shots because you have such a huge dynamic range of light intensity, and even a huge flash or reflective materials might not always fill out the dark areas enough.

There is always a 'best' exposure to be found though, and you move the setup slightly into the shade and find another good composition, or simple solutions like wait for the sun to pass behind some cloud a bit, or whatever...

The best bit about photography is there is no right or wrong way, just different ways. Ultimately it's just another art form/expression, and you don't need anything fancy at all to do that, if you know the shot you want to get and how to get it, then that is the hardest part over imho! I spent £1200 on clobber and simulate photography at work sometimes, and we do filming, so I've got a good idea, but my brothers wife has captured some STUNNING images with a 2nd hand eBay SLR and lenses for a few hundred quid, just by having a vision and the patience at the right time of day... sitting out waiting at sunset or sunrise with just the right weather conditions!

What the guys have said is so true. Equipment helps, but it's about having an eye for pic and a decent subject (like in these pics :D).

I've started with the cheapest of the cheap DLSRs - a Canon 350d which set me back £250 including the 18-55 "kit" lens. I've since spent £12 on a tripod from Aldi (does the job), £5 on a cable remote, but my biggest spend since £180 on a nice 55-250 EFS lens (which is just superb for close up action shots). Even my previous compact digital camera was more than £250!

The old 300D and 350D are not bad cameras at all.

Newer more expensive kit helps, but that is all it does. I wouldn't say any of them offer better outright potential to get the right pic, they just help you get there, and it's not many factors of 'betterness' more fractions... ie, D70S > D200 Nikon has colour temp white balance, but you can get round that with raw, has more Mpix, but 6.4 is ample for most photo prints to hang on a wall, and it has off-menu dedicated iso and auto/fixed focus buttons, but the main benefit I'd say is the nice big viewfinder.
BUT, all in, it only makes taking the picture a bit easier, it doesn't do things the much cheaper one can do outright. Ultimately all a camera does is expose light to a sensor via a lens. All the rest is just helping you get the light you want, but it doesn't do it any more effectively.

I have a D70s, and have used D60,80, 200, and 300D 350D, 20D and 30D, and to be honest I don't really see much want for a better one. Just more lenses and stuff :D

Took me about 2 mins to realise there wasn't a car in that pic...

...not that that's a problem.

Nice shot, but her hair is too blurry imho. And bring some brightness/color to those eyes. Good work.
