I have a Motorola V3 which I use all the time, it has a company sim card so I don't pay for any calls,

I am SHOCKED no one has pointed this out yet. The iPhone does NOT use a sim card so unless your company is willing to reimburse you or pay the total monthly bill, I don't think this is the way to go.

I personally use an iPhone for my personal mobile and also have a company issued Blackberry for work email. I rarely use the Blackberry for calls.

My iphone 3gs uses a sim card - it comes with a little silver key thingymajig to open the sim drawer on the top - perhaps the store put your sim card in for you when you were not looking :?

Rabman and Andrew - thanks for pointing this out, so if the sim won't work then I will have to keep the V3 and the iphone would become just a gadget. Hmmmm. Company is on O2 as well so I hoped it would just work.

iPhones are ONLY warrantied in the country of sale ie any warranty issues and the phone will have to be returned to USA
or any other country that you might be tempted to try to purchase from
AND US phones are locked to AT&T and at $199 you will have an AT&T 24 month contract not much help in UK
If in any doubt search through this Apple User Forum

Good intel

If you purchase a PAYG on O2, for £15 they will unlocked it but take away the free 12 months data access .You should then be able to use another sim but unless it is or the network is set up you may lose some of the iPhone features
All UK phones are locked to the supplying network only O2 offer an unlocking service

Iphones are great but contract and Ts&Cs are very different to other phones after all it is Apple

I just checked. You are absolutely right.  I have an iPhone 3g which is the second one I've owned and they never pointed that out. I asked about the sim card and they told me it didn't need one. I don't think At&T want people to know how easily interchangeable these are.

When we purchase the phone, they do not set it up in the store. We must connect to our computer for activation.

Errrr.....mine has a SIM Card. I put it in myself :) Maybe a US vs Europe thing. The SIM tray on ours is on the top, next to the power key.

Also downloaded a handy little application that you use for 0845 / 0870 calls....routes them through 01*** numbers so it comes off your free minutes instead of being chargeable. It works, now all I need to see is if the calls were charged on my bill....Googled it and seems legit.

Which App is that I can only find the one that seems to work like Saynoto0870.com although I have heard of the rerouting App

I couldn't justify the cost of iPhone monthly contracts...Might be worth a look if you want a cheaper option than the iPhone...
And that's exactly what I did in the end, got fed up waiting for news on the next iPhone so I bought an iPod touch in the meantime just to see if I like the UI etc, but in the end I got an HTC Desire on T-Mobile for £15/month including unlimited internet, paid around £160 for the handset. Works out at half the cost of an iPhone over two years. And it's pretty sexy, I think I prefer it, Android and HTC Sense.

:sweetheart:

My upgrade was due this month (have iPhone 3G was going to upgrade to 3Gs but decided to wait in case of newer better phone) They dropped my contract to a month to month O2 for £25 a month and almost the same as the £35 month before (still free browsing etc but pay for MMS) I have app that gives me it free anyaway :D
cant wait for 3G iPad though as i'm a sucker for Mac gear (24" iMac at home too)
