Missing service History

Hello!

Bit of a strange one this.. My Z4 was purchased a few months ago with the service book fully stamped etc.

The guy who I bought it off was overly cautious with everything and seemed quite paranoid about the whole sale. I did the Hpi check and checked the car thoroughly and was satisfied with the car and sale.

However, when I got back I went to find all the invoices for work completed and they weren't there. So I called the BMW garages where he had claimed to had work done and it all checked out. He had lots of work done but seemed too paranoid to let me have the invoices as they had personal information on.

Now my question is, how do I get some replacements? I can either call up pretending to be him to get them, or call up being the new owner and ask for the invoices. Would they not send them to the new owner as they aren't actually mine?

I have also contacted the previous owner and asked him to send any invoices he has etc but he seemed reluctant too and I'm not holding out much hope.

This is all VERY stupid of me as I should have checked for invoices but I was so excited about getting the car it's the one thing I forgot!

The only personal information on the invoices are his name, address and maybe telehpne number which you know anyway.

Sounds like he is being a cock.

Have you asked him what information he is worried about?

You mean I should not have given my invoices to Bing? That explains it .... :D

Very bizzare. I would certainly push the issue with the guy who sold it as you'll need that paperwork when you come to sell the car. A stamped service book is one thing but I'd be unhappy if the invoices weren't there to back it up.
It's not fair of him to withold those documents so I would question him on why he has....

Yeah he was so difficult!

His wife was forcing him to sell the car and he was making up every excuse not to sell it.

He said he was away working but I will pester him until I get it. At least I know the work has been done but it will just cause me problems when I come to sell it.

Such an annoyance!

Much as it's nice to have a pile of back up invoices, at least you have the BMW garages confirmation that the work done was real so not so bad.

You can ask the dealers for copies of invoices but no doubt they'll hide behind data protection

From previous checks I've done, I believe that dealers will only confirm normal servicing and take a little pushing to confirm what warranty work actually was and any non service work.

The guy I spoke to at the dealership basically said things such as "for that amount I'd say that was a roof motor replacement". So he was very helpful and told me what work had been done. He suggested calling another dealership who had better access to the invoices (change of system or something) to get copies.

I am quite tempted to call up posing as the previous owner as they can't say no surely? Or just be honest and hope the other person understands

When the car is sold on his name will still be there for the next owner (and the next.. and the next so on).
Maybe that's what he doesn't want.

The car is sold, so getting those invoices from the previous owner is difficult if he doesnt want that.

Maybe not but if you've got nothing to hide in the history then I don't see the problem.
If it was me buying it and the chap told me i couldn't have the history I would walk away, it's just weird and suspicious, plus I want a log of the all the work done over the years, not just stamps.

Go easy on the bloke..

His wife did make him sell his zed.

Must be a sad day when your wife takes your balls and then forces you to sell a car especially a z.
Should tell him to lose the wife too and go buy a Porsche

Ask him if he will photocopy all of the invoices and just blank out his address, etc on the copies he gives you. As long as the dates , Reg or Chassis numbers remain on them to tie them up with the vehicle, I would have thought that would be a good compromise ??

I don't get this. You have the service record and had verified it's genuine. Why do you want/need the invoices? I recently sold my 535 privately, which was an absolutely spot-on car with full history, etc. I handed over all of the paperwork, but not the invoices. I wasn't trying to hide anything (nothing to hide), but did not see the need to show them or to give them.

When I bought my Z4 a couple of years back I didn't even think of asking for invoices and if he'd given me them I'd probably have binned them (unless they related to parts under guarantee).

There's more in the invoices than in the service history (aka stamps in the booklet).
It gives a clearer picture of the life of the car and thus makes it more complete.
Some people value that. It will never devalue a car.

If it showed a propensity for repeat faults & unreliability it could easily devalue the value of a car, it would certainly unnerve me & make me look elsewhere.

Interesting to see everyone's opinions on the subject and how important (or not) you all deem it to

Anyway, if he doesn't send it to me, then I guess I have the service book stamped and don't have much choice but to leave it at that.

I drove a real hard bargain with him and got about £650-800 off what the car was really worth. Maybe he's just bitter..? Who knows!
