On my E24 I got down to -- but to be fair the lowest displayed figure was 10.

The tank is supposed to be 55 litres but I don't think you can get that much in.
I was playing Russian fuel roulette with blanks ( petrol can in the boot).
I got 27 miles after the readout went to the straight lines and ran out 200yds from the petrol pump. I tried to start the car but there wasn't enough fuel in to get it going. I poured just over 4 ltrs in, drove 200yds and filled it to th brim with just under 50ltrs.
The car is an M.

It is definitely a 55 litre tank....I've taken it down to about 1.5 litres left which was pretty scary to be honest as I know from previous experience cars tend to not be able to pull through the last litre or so in a tank. Once took on the challenge of seeing how many miles I could get out of a ford focus 1.6 ti-vct on my daily commute to work (33miles each way) over a week or so. Managed to get about 51.5mpg (610 miles when the engine cut out). Worked out the MPG/how much fuel was left in the tank from jerry can contents + amount I filled up with when I got to a petrol station.
I was pretty chuffed actually considering my dad routinely only ever gets about 42 and the best he ever managed was 44. He also did longer commutes as well.

I've played it many times but you don't half feel a **** when you play and lose. I still can't resist though but spend most my time either dreading the consequences of running out at some b*****d junction or imagining the car isn't running smoothly as it attempts to suck the last vapours out of the tank! Can't bring myself to fill up every week though - life's too short. This said, i love looking at the needle jammed to the right.
Had a 2000 focus with a "miles left indicator" it was indicating 14 miles left... I'm only popping down the road, it'll be fine. The famous words of "it's only a couple of miles there and back"

What's the behaviour of the miles remaining indicator on the zeds? My ford goes from 25 to zero in about 5 miles, which can be un-nerving. Last night it was at zero for about 3 miles then went back up to 8.

I don't think I've ever gone below 20 miles on mine. I'm sure the manual states you shouldn't go below 28/29 miles (probably BMW trying to cover in case people get cut short with the last few miles). The one time I went below the BMW recommendation, an ignition coil packed in the next day. I know it's not related but I now get edgy going below 35 miles in case it happens again!
Not that I advise it, but I've gone to zero then travelled a further 25 miles and still had 1.5 litres in the tank and I have a 3.0 si.

Youl probs find you will get 40-60 miles when the computer tells you its empty. Its a safety feature so you will get to a petrol station. But its not advisable to try, especially with an older car or an M as the gunk wont do the engine much good. But if your using premium there should be less gunk but you dont know what the previous owners have run the car on.
Does anyone remember the Top Gear efficiency challenge with the Subaru Legacy, Jag XJ and the VW Polo blue motion from Basel Switzerland to Blackpool on one tank of fuel? Jeremy XJ was on empty for over 50 miles and when he got there they took out the tank and he still had enough for another 120 miles.
Just another thing the car companies do so we get to our destination unscaved.
The lowest I went was 1 mile because I left my BMW for a service at the nearest BMW garage a 40 mile round trip and they drove it back... left it with 100 miles 1 mile F
