Mid range tyre recommendations

Hi,
Apologies as I suspect this topic has been discussed many times before, but I'm looking for suggestions for non RF tyres for my E85 running staggered 107's.
The sizes that I think are recommended are 255/40/18 and 225/40/18 - is this correct?
I had it MOT'd yesterday and was advised by my garage that the tyres are 14 years old :o and as hard as bakelite !

Most of my driving is around the back lanes of Somerset, so not looking for anything super sticky or sporting, just an everyday tyre with minimal road noise.
I'm happy to but online, but would prefer a supplier that lets you pick a local fitter.

Thanks, John

Recommended tyre for 18s are 225/40/r18 fronts, and 255/35/r18 rears. Though some encourage 245/40/r18 rears.

Personally, id look at goodyear eagle f1 assymetric 5s. Very highly rated tyre, but very reasonably priced. I also quite like hankooks, which are again very reasonably priced for their performance.

I'd agree on the GY Assy5s, having got them on my E89 for £400 a set.
I wouldn't say they were midrange, but the price certainly fitted that criteria.

I found the goodyears pretty noisy although in general a very good tyre, I'd recommend Vredestein Ultrac Vorti's as a great mid range tyre👍

Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2 are 'A' rated in the wet, excellent rating for fuel economy and the quietest tyre rating of 67. NOTHING at the price comes remotely close to it.

I'm running the Dunlops too at the moment and agree on its qualities.. Im not sure I'd put it in the mid range bracket though as its definitely closer to top end prices

Thanks for all of the recommendations, very tempted by the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2's, especially with the discount available at Blackcircles bringing them in at just under £375 for a set

Has anybody else on here fitted them? Thoughts?

Cheers,

Didn't realise you could pick them up that cheap.. Im assuming 18s? At that price I'd be all over them, I recently paid around 650 fitted for them in 19s

I really rate Dunlop Sportmaxx RT2’s, on my second set now. Very quiet, long lasting and with loads of grip. That price sounds great as well, I guess fitting is on top?
My new wheels just fitted to car with said tyres.

Another vote for Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 5's. Just put a full set on a few weeks ago and roughly £100 a corner fitted (via Tyreshopper) on standard 18 wheel dimensions. Don't look stretched, little bit of rim protection, not too noisy and great grip levels.

I don't yet have a Zed (still looking) but run RT2s on two other cars..they quietly (pun) get on with the job  :driving:

I am another +1 for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5. Had a set of PS4 tyres on it when I bought it (albeit 17" not 18" and quite worn). The PS4 tyres are a tiny bit more grippy to the point its barely noticeable. Meanwhile the EF1A5 tyres are much cheaper, especially if you buy when there is a Blackcircles discount on. Next time I need new tyres I will not be going back to PS4 and will be fitting another set of EF1A5.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy here. Great value and most importantly for me (after grip) is that they're comfortable. They're generally regarded as having a compliant ride. So yep, Goodyear gets my vote.

Another vote for Goodyear F1 Assymetric 5s.

Superb grip wet or dry, very quiet, nice ride and well priced.

Thanks All,

I eventually replaced the fronts with Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2's and am planning to get the rears this month. Not ideal doing one end at a time I know, but needs must.
Cant believe the difference this has made already, no more twitchy steering and crashing over bumps :D

As comfort is a priority, is a change to 245/40/r18's on the rear worthwhile, has anybody that has done this found that it makes much difference?

What about looks? I have to say that I prefer the look of a 'filled' wheel arch.

On another note, whats the highest MPG anybody has seen on a 2.5? On a long and boring motorway trip recently my trip computer showed 35.3 mpg which is the highest I've ever seen, although this was on cruise control and a very steady pace.

Cheers,

J

The Dunlop's are just about the best for comfort tyre out there so not sure you'll benefit a whole lot from the extra sidewall especially as you'll get very little going down in width to from standard 255 to 245, 255/40 will give a little more sidewall and arch fill, personally I dont think you need it but I'm no tyre expert

I've gone with Toyo Proxes Sport, replacing my Vredistiens. they don't look as "square" but the grips is great all round and they are way quieter, especially on the awful part of the M25 near J10-13.

18” Goodyear’s work out at £380 fitted at Kwik fit of all places, for my M135.

Currently 15% off if you buy 4
