Michelin Super Sport?

Yes, assuming you mean Michelin Pilot Super Sports, I have had 4 sets on the rear over several years after trying Conties, Vreds and some others. I found them to be perfect for me and have stuck with them. Simply the best summer tyres you can fit on an ///MR. I had to put PS4's on the rear last year, as I could not find a set of MPSS, would happily swap them back. Once they are warmed through they are wonderful on a dry road. Merely ok in the wet though, so bear that in mind for daily driving.

Good tyres but old tech now. See if you can get PS4S in your size (not to be confused with PS4) which replaced the PSS.

PS4S is best overall, this is UK so weather is so varied, PS4S is always one of the top tyres in ratings for wet braking grip.
If its good in wet its gonna be better in the dry

The PS4S is the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, which was launched in 2016 as a direct successor to the Pilot Super Sport (PSS), first sold in 2011.

I'm not 100% certain but I believe the PSS is no longer being manufactured and retailers are now selling old stock. If buying PSS, worth checking the production date on the sidewall.

Very happy with the PS4S, plus the upgrades in the sig. (Dr Obvious here, tyres are just a part of the equation.) Word is there’s a PS5 out, and presumably a PS5S soon. But I haven’t seen it in America.

Agree with plenty, I could not find MPSS for sale last time I needed tyres. MPS4S is the newer tyre. If that is available to fit your rims then that has to be the one to go for. However if you have found some MPSS at a decent price, then they are still great tyres.

Thank you, but for the moment I'm only interested in Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

Without question one of the worst tyres ive ever had from a premium make , the only worse being Pirelli Cinturatos that i wouldn't want on a wheelbarrow .
The MPSS is only any use to someone caning their car on warm dry tarmac , for the other 99% of users 99% of the year they are woefully inept , the PS4S is a massive step forward in that they grip like fury in the dry , decent enough in the damp & take zero warming up BUT , this comes at a cost ( not monetary ) in cabin noise  currently running a virtually new set of PS4S in 20s on my M4 & the road noise is intolerable .
This will be the 3rd car ( 997 C4 & 35iS ) ive bought with PS4S on that i've switched the almost new tyres on :| id love to love them but can't , just way too noisy .

 Should have bought a hearse.

My MC had 19" MPSS tyres fitted when I bought it in December 2019.

I collected it 150 miles from home and on a cold, drizzly, grey day they were hopeless - every roundabout had the Traction Control working hard. :o

But on a dry summers day they were great.

I swapped wheels to 18s last year and based on one of mrwilks posts had Kumho Ecstas fitted and they are much better in less than perfect weather.

I gather the ///MR is a more tractable beast than the ///MC in bad and bumpy conditions. So maybe an ///MR instead of a Hearst. Never had any major trouble with them. But then I enjoy sideways on the odd occasion without too much raise in heartrate. :driving:  and yes once it is dry and warm they are just amazing.

Rather a Hearst than a pram-top. :P

Thank you all very much, indeed.

Almost needless to say, I shan't be buying MPSS.

Personally I don't get the criticism of the MPSS, we had them on our M140i and found them to be an excellent allround tyre in the summer, rain or shine. We use winter tyres in the colder months.

I have them on z4mc and would happily have another set.

Another vote for MPSS. Got them all round on my Z4MC. I’m sure their newer tyres are better but as it will take me about 40 years to wear mine out and sidewall cracking will become an issue long before tread depth does, there’s not much point in shelling out.

I think Pilot Sport 5 is now out so that might be interesting. Saw a chap on Instagram with an Estoril Blue E46 M3 had just had them fitted all round this week.

The star marked MPSS fitted to the G29 is exceptional, however it only comes in two sizes 255 and 275, this tyre was developed by BMW and Michelin for the last M3 and M4 with a tailored specific compound. I ran MPS4S on the SL and I would say that the characteristics are similar to the star marked MPSS

I think that sums it up though. I've used my MC all year round so long as there is no salt about, and that's when I found the MPSS had limitations on colder days.

If it's any combination of cold, damp, drizzly, icy or salty I take the 3 Series that does get winters fitted.

Then I'm glad we agree :)

You can't expect a tyre that's basically set up for higher performance road driving to work well when it gets too cold, it's not designed for that. Does that make it a bad tyre, of course not.

Same as I wouldn't wear sandals to go out in the snow.😊

MPSS were frequently winning tyre of the year awards etc. So I am pretty sure they were and still are a decent tyre. The OP was a bit vague as to why they were interested, maybe there are some stock going cheap (and didnt want us to know about it  ) but something I would bear in mind is that they discontinued and they could be very old stock, you dont want to be buying tyres that have been sat around for years on end - check the dates on the sidewalls.
