MFSW Saga

Cheers sk93. Good advice. And thanks to CJ for sending the PDF. What I still don't get though is how my car would need an aftermarket cable for the retrofit. It was made late 2004 and all the documents and threads I've read so far all say that it should be okay if its a car after September 2003.

Thats really what's confusing the hell out of me.

Because it's not ALWAYS the case; there's a few instances on here where people have gone to find their cd changer cable on their 2003, and it not be there... or some who come to fit the cruise control, only to find there's no wiring for that either (or even vice versa).

I think it's a case of "rule of thumb" rather that "definitive rule" :/

And there are instances where in the cars history things have been changed or altered. Until yo uucheck you cannot be sire that the lead 'h' in the pdf retrofit kit is correctly between the steering mount and the connector and not missing or unplugged.

Either check it carefully or give BMW at least £200 to diagnose, examine, fit and code'

Okay guys, I hear you. Its raining here now so I'll have a look tomorrow night after work :P

Okay, it stopped raining and I managed to get home from work before it got too dark. Took apart the cowling under my steering column and disconnected the green plug.

Shows two wires in the bottom row but not sure if they're in 9 & 10 or 6 & 7? Could that be the issue?

Or something else perhaps. Any and all ideas gratefully received.

BTW I also cancelled my BMW service slot tomorrow. Going to an indy back in Suffolk this weekend when Im home to reset the airbag light for me.

EDIT: Ahh - I just checked the image from the how-to and it shows this...

Which looks like I in fact DO NOT have the wire required and will need to retrofit it. Does that look about right? If so, where do I get one quickly so I can fit it this weekend back home in the shire??

I'd be confident if pre fitted they are in correct slots, but if you read the lug it has tiny markings to tell you.

More interesting is the other end on the connector.

Sorry - no easy way than checking both ends and if all good then off to the dealers.

BTW - I'd leave the airbag until the wheel is sorted else you'll probably trip it again

Doesn't PIC 9 above show wires in both 6,7,9 and 10 though CJ? If so it would appear mine is missing the refit wire anyway right as 9 & 10 are empty per my pic above that post of the plug at the same angle?

Comparison of the two (how-to plug and my Zed's) here:

So you editted the post so my reply looks out of place....

OK so the correct lead should be coloured red/white/yellow and violet/yellow according the the pdf guide I sent and the cable colour coding on the wiring diagram

You therefore need to go buy cable 'H' and fit it between the plug you have undone and light module connector X12 pins 21 and 27

I'm going back some time but I got the cable for <£5 from the dealer on 3 day order. I also recall fitting it to X12 is a pita as it's got so many wires

Yeah sorry CJ; our posts must have crossed. I'll order the cable 'H' tomorrow and hopefully get it for the end of the week. Will fit per the PDF through to the light module X12 and see if that sorts it. If so I'll then head to my indy for the airbag light cancellation!

Thanks again for all your help CJ, and keep everything crossed

I cant believe this whole saga is because you didnt have the retrofit cable inkey! What a deeeeeebacle :D  Ah well at least this might only cost you a fiver and an hours messing about. :)

Here you go - part number for the lead on its own B 61.12.0.394.848 cost £4.94 after discount (+VAT) I mention this as the standard BMW parts system may not show it and they have to look on some sort of sub system.

Imagine you'd taken it to the dealers in the current state - trousers down and over a barrel comes to mind. :)

Yes, I was trying to avoid any barrel activity where possible :o
Thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes after the weekend once I've got the lead.

Tell me about it Dreamer! Half of me is p*ssed off I didn't check the connections first and half of me because my Nov 2004 manufactured Zed isn't ready to roll like 99.98% of all others on here. On the brighter side of things, at least its not something major and has been relatively cheap (if you exclude my hourly rate of course :) )

You know what they say about Assume? :P

When fitting the end of the retro cable to the light module, make sure you peel back the loom covering a fair bit and crimp into the wire as far away from the plug as you can.
The reason is that when you re-insert the plugs into the holder, and then into the light module, it gets very, very tight on space.
I made my own retrocable (it's only two wires after all) but still struggled with space issues.

Glad you didn't get "serviced" by the dealer :D

Thanks sk93, I'll watch out for that on the wire covering...and never assume anything every again with BMW/German logic.
Retro fit kit ordered and according to latest update, now on way to my house ready for this weekends project

It's done....

At last my wheel works. Fitted the retrofit cable this morning, reconnected all and blow me down, it f@cking works!!
