metal clanking noise from rear of the car

Hi Guys,

I had the top down yesterday for the first time in a long time and when driving over bumps in the road I get a sound from under the car (I would guess the rear) where it sounds like 2 metal plates clanging against each other... It is not noticeable from inside the car with the windows up but really clear when you open a window.
I had a look at springs and they were fine and I wiggled whatever I would get to underneath and could not see anything obvious so just wondered what sorts of things can cause this kind of sound?

If it's over bumps, then possibly the exhaust is moving around and knocking on something. check the hangers are good. You could try moving it by hand. But it's quite a heavy lump, so only really possible to lift from underneath it.

Thanks, I will have another go moving it about Does sound like that kind of noise like something maybe banging the heat shield so I will have another look later

Haha funny story.... when i did the coolant sensor somehow I dropped a screw driver and it went through the bonnet catch hole and landed in the tray in front of the radiator After trying to fish it out for ages I suddenly realised that the grills pull out :roll:

With that kind of accuracy you should consider a professional darts career!

Magnet on a string. :wink:

Might end up attached to the rad though, so may be not.

Check the brake backing plates have not corroded through at the bolts and are free to rattle about. Also, there is a small aluminium cover over the diff that could have corroded or come adrift

check the back box heat shield...that was my issue.

I jacked the rear up last night one side at a time and its definitely something to do with the rear passenger side wheel as when it was jacking up it was making a lot of noise and then the wheel would make metal knocking noises when i banged it with my fist. I checked for anything loose but couldn't seem to find anything? :| very confusing!

Well I don't think I'd be driving it far until you've found it.
Next step? Wheel off and delve deeper?

Yea it's parked up now until I can figure this out, the noise its making is so odd all I can describe it as is 2 pieces of flat metal hitting each other so like a chatter of metal over bumps. But the exhaust seems fine when i wobble it and all the brakes etc seem solid so I have no idea what it is :lol: cars hey!

HAHA yea that could be fun luckily I got it out by taking the kidney grill out haha

check the back box heat shield...that was my issue.

I wobbled the exhaust but no noises were made at the backbox unless its more of an up and down motion as it is quite heavy to lift up and down, was yours a heavy metal on metal noise or a tinny rattle? :?

The diff cover as you can see in my photo is quite big but only thin aluminium.
Are the two diagonal tie rods secure ? Are you certain it's not a coil spring ? :?

I think I may have figured it out finally!
I think my brake pad is loose in the holder as I have been scouring youtube and the only videos that sound the same as mine is loose brake pads due to fitting incorrectly so i will be going back to Selectatyre to get them to check them for me as I only had them done a few months ago

Could try getting someone to apply the brake while you rattle the wheel again, to see if it goes away?
When you say loose, do you mean no retaining clip fitted, or maybe that the caliper is seized?

Check your caliper retaining clips; I misfitted mine when I did my pads when I first bought the car and although they were secured in, they were the wrong way round and just rattled when driving.
