Megane 225 to Z4 newbie coming through

Welcome to the dark side.

I'd strongly recommend a 3.0, fuel consumption is no different really, and you'd only feel let down after the megane. I'll reply to your PM over on CS a bit later, sorry I got caught up.

Alright Jimmy,

Sorry worded that badly. I meant get the 3.0 engine if you can (which is 6 cylinders), but if not the 2.5 has 6 also. I think I'm right in saying the 2.0 and 2.2 have a 4 cylinder engine, which just won't give you that same ear-gasm noise.

2.2 is also a six cylinder

As Carol said, a good checklist for what to look out for is here:
http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21281

A few varying specs which you may want to look out for:
- Heated/Memory Seats
- Parking Sensors (PDC)
- Xenon Lights
- Cruise Control
- Sat Nav
- Aux Input
- Carver Hi-Fi
- Multi Function Steering Wheel (MFSW)
- De-Ginger (You'll notice alot of older E85 models on here have the orange tint in the front indicators removed, to give a much more modern look. Depending on if you like that look and what your abilities are, it's often easier to look for a model that's been de-gingered then try to source and do the mod yourself)

Other than that it's just a case of looking for one you like, have you decided on the colour for example? Some common colours are Saphire Black, Sterling Grey, Titanium Silver, Imola Red, Toledo Blue, Maldives Blue and Montego Blue. You can have a look at what's for sale/been sold via this forum here: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=41

Good luck

aside from a logical decision based on specs etc...hear the sound of the straight six and you'll be sold immediately!

*jimmyj*, for specs you'll be needing this thread :

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=169415#p169415

2003-05 specs are first, 2006-09 specs are second. The list is very, very long, so there is a link to the 06-09 (facelift) specs at the very top of the thread.

Worth noting that the 2.5 and 3.0 engines changed when the facelift came in, from the M54 to the N52. 5 gears to 6, and an increase in power. Not sure about the 2.5, but pre- and post-facelift BHP for the 3.0 are 231 and 265 respectively. I have only driven the N52 3.0 so I have no idea how noticeable the difference is.

Come across these two on auto trader. One a cat d. Any advice?

Can't see any mention of cat D on either.

The silver one looks to be the better of the 2 and this is reflected in the price. If the silver one could be had for around £5,700 then that would be a decent deal imho. 8)

For me, I'd prob be more interested in the cat d one if there was proof of the replacement roof being cause. Hopefullly the replacement roof was done at same time as updated roof motor - well known weak point for a lot of z4s. The cat d has better spec, with sat nav which the other appears not to have. I can't remember but does the v car have 18 alloys too? Would save the need to upgrade at a later stage when z4 itis kicks in. I had a cat d with replacement roof and you'd never ever know it, no creaks or anything. The lower mileage would in my opinion far outway the insurance claim - I'd want proof of mileage. Some would have issues with a cat d car and selling on, but I sold mine to the first viewer with no problems at all!

And is automatic better than manual or vice versa, when choosing? Is that purely a personal choice.
It is purely personal preference, I am in the camp that a sporty car shouldn't be mated to an auto but owners with autos absolutely love them.

I bought my M3 specifically with a manual as I am old school whereas most other owners have opted for the DCT(twin clutch) it's just what you prefer yourself, I have owned an Auto & twin clutch too but they don't get my juices flowing but if you do mega miles or loads of commuting an auto is a no brainer. :)

@imp75 I hear what your saying that was my thought as well. Might be worth ahaving a look at might check it out.
@LeeZ4MR - again thats what I'm thinking lol, dont do alot of miles so Manual it is. Just wanted to double check as there are some car which seem to perform better being an auto.

Personal choice for sure but the 3.0i is perfectly suited to the auto box in my opinion. First auto I've ever owned (always thought they were for old farts or disabled people) but boy was I wrong! Makes the whole driving experience feel that bit more 'luxury' or 'executive' as you don't have to change gear yourself like the common people in their manuals do.

The things I didn't realise but now love about the auto...

you never stall the engine
you never roll backwards on hill starts
you never fluff a gear change during a spirited take off from the lights
you never need to touch the handbreak
cruise control is far better as it shifts up and down when necessary in addition to just adjusting throttle
You can hold your girlfriends hand if you're the romantic type without needing to let go for roundabouts etc.
Stop start driving in heavy traffic is way less frustrating and not as tiresome

In theory there is a slight performance hit, I can't remember what it is but it's something like 0.3 of a second 0-60 compared to a manual 3.0 but in reality if you did say 10 drag races between a manual and an auto I don't think there would be any difference in average performance as the auto in sport mode using kickdown etc. will be totally consistent in its behaviour whereas a human in a manual will inevitably be inconsistent to some extent and make mistakes at some point.

The cat D looks like a decent car if it was just the roof being slashed and not then stolen recovered but it doesn't have heated seats or Xenon lights like the silver one. It does have factory nav which people seem to like but believe me the factory nav on pre-facelifts is not great (in fact it's not even good - it is maybe half as good as my 6 year old Tom Tom).

Don't rush into anything there are heaps of 3.0 E85 Zeds out there to choose from and with prices now beginning with a 5 you can get a hell of a lot of car for your money when you consider these would have been over £30k new 10 years ago!

Good lick with the search. :driving:

Really appericate it guys. everyone has been great so far. Tyring to close myself down and not get too excited and buy the first one I see. Just need to take my time.

Good point. I had nt noticed the other one had xenons nor that the cat d didn't have heated seats. To be fair all three extras (inc satnav) are real indepth retrofits. I guess its what's important to you. Personally I'd rather have heated seats than satnav - more top-down time more of the time! Just a shame theres such a difference in mileages on the cars...... Makes the choice tougher!

Never done that in the manual.

Oh yes you can. :o

Slush box and spirited take off, I don't think so. :poke:

You need the hand brake for J turns. :driving:

What's cruise control. :P

Ok so there is one good point.

Move to Cornwall, stay in on the three weekends a year the roads are busy and never see heavy traffic again. :D

Welcome Jimmy, you may notice, some of us like to argue, just for the fun of it. :D

Are you looking for a roadster or a coupe?

Where are you located?
