May have been caught speeding - any advice?

We are allowed the use of radar detectors. I put my old Z unit in the new P car yesterday and it paid off this AM. Out on a 100 mile canyon country run the darn thing went off while sailing down a mountain road and sure enough there the bugger was 1/2 mile down the road. I have plenty of time to slow and saved me and the idiot on my arse a fat ticket. What they won't let us do is to use laser jammers although some do... :P
Laser is more prevalent in the city and radar in the county due to the costs.

Good luck, but travelling at "just below" 70mph entering a 50mph zone is asking for trouble. It's 50 from the sign....not slow down when you reach the sign. Not sure what the fine is in the UK, but here that speed would be considered a major infraction and likely end up costing you in excess of 500 pounds.

Does a disqualification mess your insurance up much?

I'm 22 and have 5 years no claims but have spent an eye watering amount on insurance over the years.

You might get an idea of that by inputting appropriate data into a price comparison site. My case was 30+ years ago (I was in my 20s at the time) and I had a company car so I had no personal motor insurance at the time.

Much appreciated mate

Does anyone have experience using radar detectors in the UK? Are they worth it? Best one on the market?

No excuse for it, completely my fault.

If I get a ticket may have to go to a rehabilitation clinic to get over the Z addiction and buy myself a little Nissan Micra

UK does not use radar anymore and a laser detector is really not that usefull as there is very little scatter.

Using apps like Waze is far more useful nowadays as traps are pretty quickly updated on that.

Thanks for the suggestion much appreciated

Not completely accurate.. Gatso (big square yellow boxes with an obvious flash tube) are radar based and its easy enough to get a warning with a radar detector if a preceeding car goes through..however..

Overall most detectors now are laser based or have sensors in the ground and the reflection /bounce is very small so diffcult to detect..

A regularly updated database appplication is your best hope but even that doesn't stop the camera vans pitching up in creative places..

My generation are so lucky to have had the freedom to enjoy our cars before all this tech was available to enforce the out of date speeding regs.
Another few decades and the car simply won't let you drive it for fun. Or may be the system will get smart and allow you younger folk to drive at an apropriate speed for changing condition. Judge dread on his way either way.

After my last ban all I could afford to insure was a 997cc Mini Metro so I feel your possible pain mate :headbang:

I chose a Uniden R3extreme detector after much research - It detects most every kind and wavelength including laser. They have front only or front/rear detecting models. Coppers love to sit on overpasses or freeway ramps here and shoot passing cars where it is easy for them to bolt out into traffic and fall behind the offending driver. My detector saved me from a radar ticket once and failed to indicate on another time when I did get the ticket. But ...
I figure I have gotten away with a lot of speeding around in my time. :driving: Any day I get a ticket I earned it.

I was in a similar situation a few weeks ago - I got away with it that time. I think it was possibly due to me slowing down, but I will never know. My reprieve has made me a little more careful now.

Fingers crossed for a good outcome.

Don't stress too much, if you were under 64mph you'll most likely get offered a speed awareness course, if you were under 76mph you'll almost certainly get 3 points and £100 fine.

Ref this info for Northern Ireland
30 mph up to and including 42 mph
40 mph up to and including 53 mph
50 mph up to and including 64 mph
60 mph up to and including 75 mph
70 mph up to and including 86 mph

I was done for 34 in a 30 in Wales by a camera van - offered course.
When I went on my Smart Motorway course I did 56 in a 50 slowing down on the M1 at Leeds.
We were told unofficially on the course that Speed +10% +2 is a threshold sometimes unofficially used,
So 30 would be 35 for a course which most of the attendees fitted - not 42 - 42 would definitelt be points
as would 79.
I would suggest , based on my experience that 50 + 5 + 2 or 57mph would be the threshold for a course but you already have points so depending how old you may get points.
My understanding is you cant get a /nother course within 3 years of a previous offence
I wish you luck!

I was doing 39 in a 30 in north Derbyshire a business colleague was doing 41 on the same road, we were both offered the course

I use quite an oldish radar detector and it always picks up the static cameras and will bark at me on possible safety camera locations but I think that's just the known locations, unsure on occasions when there is actually a van at said location as invariably there isn't. It will also shout at me if I'm going over the speed limit, coupled with using Waze and if in the Hyundai its system also shows the current road speed limit on the HUD although it seems to be not that accurate as I know for a fact that one village I regularly drive through I know it's 40 but Hyundai shows it as 60  So all my speeding tickets are forwarded to Hyundai UK HQ :)

Tim.

Good luck with that fella!

Joking apart, the BMW System in my 335 recognises the road sign Speed limits and is not reliant on sat nav location- it also sees village name signs in Germany and recognises them as 50kph - then converts that to 30mph.
