Massive rear end shunt - write off?

So, owned the car for 8 weeks.

Sat at a slip road waiting to enter a roundabout, stationary, car was hit at the back at i'd say 15 - 20 mph - pushed the car forward a few metres.

Managed to crawl home, but the rear bumper's ruined, rear crash / crumple bar's snapped clean in two - tailgate buckled too and looks like it's pushed into the bootspace.

Going to drop it off at Chartwells (prestige car care) for assessment tomorrow, but i'm hoping it's a write off - thoughts?

Aching like hell though, massive hyper extension / flexion of the neck.

Absolutely fedup.

Hope your ok, Z4 not the best car to be hit it with its fixed head rests.

Drop it into BMW if you want it written off there good a bumping up the numbers :D

I did that when someone drove in the side of me and the bill was over 5K, also used accident exchange so i didn't go through my own insurance who took care of everything for me.

Chartwells use Accident Exchange so hoping they'll do the same.

Was yours repaired or written off?

Feeling the pain now!

I would think if it's crumpled the boot floor it's possibly a right off. The diff and rear subframe what all the suspension hangs off is mounted to the boot floor. So possibly a new diff drive shafts suspension linkage. If it's damaged that then the prop shaft and potentially gearbox damage.

Main thing are you ok? Stiff and sore can be fixed. But book in at the docs and get a cheek up  we can loose zeds members can always by another if they are well

That's what i'm worried about. Drove home ok with no clunks / knocks / bangs.

But as CHartwells are a repair centre they're more concerned with it being repaired rather than written off :

http://www.chartwells.net

Their main clientele is Porsche / Aston / Ferrari etc but they dealt with my Clio 197 fine.

Better to take to Sytner BMW instead?

The main thing is make sure your take car of yourself and not worry about the car too much. I had a similar accident in my wife's car, I had pain but didn't realise I had full whiplash as it can take a couple of weeks to creep in and hit you. So make sure you don't do any exercise, lift stuff and anything excessive until you know how hurt you are. I made mine a lot worse due to running etc and it took me a long time to get over it as I didn't realise I had whiplash.

What a horror story. Complete nightmare. What did the other driver say happened?

Hope you are feeling yourself soon (Ooooer).

Well they've accepted full liability.

Been signed off work for 1 week minimum due to torn / ruptured ligaments in neck / spine / shoulder / upper - lower back and left foot.

The car's been dropped off at Chartwells who seem confident it will be back to 100% for me, using only BMW OE parts, any mechanical parts will be fitted by the BMW dealer of my choice.

The most concerning bit for me, is the crash bar behind the rear bumper snapping in two, and has pushed into the boot and pushed in the black plastic on the rear edge of the boot that contains that blue box of accessories?

Thoughts?

They'll send me a PDF breakdown of the parts needed and make sure i'm happy before proceeding.

Just got it in the back of my mind it'll never be the same afterwards :(

Hope your pain lessens soon. We had a rear end shunt at probably the same speed as you but in our 9 year old 330D tourer nearly 2 years ago. Thought nothing of it, more worried about the car as the repairs were heading towards that 50% of its value number, like you we thought it would never be the same, anyway it was repaired but we sold it, but I digress! I was a bit sore and achy that night and next day and went to the drs who did nothing just said take anti inflammatories. Less than a month later I couldn't move my shoulder or drive, and needed injections, physio and 2 lots of surgery to sort it, total of 14 weeks off work plus 8 weeks of phased return, just about back to normal now. So just saying don't just think you'll be fine, do get checked out. Good luck with it all and the car!

Cheers for the reply.

I've been signed off work for 7 days, and this will be reviewed in order to potentially extend it as my neck doesn't feel right. I have initiated legal proceedings towards the party at fault for loss of earnings and personal injury.

Did you sell because of the damage?

Anthony.

*Edit*

Just had a reply as I was concerned the car would be classed as a CAT D, therefore affecting future resale value :

No the vehicle will be repaired to the factory and manufacturers standards, using genuine parts ordered through the dealership and repaired by our technicians who have been trained by BMW. The vehicle and repair will not show up on any vehicle checking databases including HPI Check and will not be classed as a CAT D repair.

If the work is done correctly it will be as prior to the shunt. I don't think it will show up on a HPI check as accident damaged.
What year is the Z4.

It might not show as a Cat D but it will be registered as accident damaged on any HPI check etc.

No it won't. The only way of being able to tell if the car's been in an accident, but not written off is if the repair isn't top notch and there are tells. Otherwise, if repaired well, you'd have no idea whether your car had been in an accident.

I had a similar accident in a different car, sitting at lights in a 60 zone then whack some tool in an AMG mercedes hit me. Collision was hard enough to take his front wheel off the hub. Boot floor in my car was gone the impact was that hard but the car was still repaired. Repair job was good though so even if it's not written off it's not the end of the world although I'm in the same mind set as you where I'd rather get a new car than go through all the hassle with potential poor repairs and drive a tainted car.

Main thing is you're okay though! Hope you get the result you're after

No it won't - my RenaultSport Clio 197 was repaired by the same guys - the value of the car was £6500, the repairs came in at £5100 - entire side if the car replaced. It was HPI clear as this will be.

I have complete confidence in them to get it back to as new standard.

And when the reception looks like this :

I know it's in the best possible place.

It's only recorded if it's written off. Hence cat d or c write off. If they repair it, nothing shows up on a hpi check.

Sorry, yes indeed it's only CAT categories that show in HPI checks. I do hope they mange to fix the car fully including any creases in the boot. As long as you are confident with the place doing the work, that's the main thing. Looks like a great place to go.

Much better than one of the BMW dealers in Edinburgh who puts their accident repairs out to tender and basically goes with the cheapest cost whilst charging bmw rates to the customer
