I'm glad someone mentioned about discounts as I work for Local Government and I'm sure an office colleague mentioned a while back that we could get a discount off Apple products so need to explore that. I'm going to pop into PC World tomorrow as passing so will see if they have a Macbook in and can have a play with.

Tim if not used to the Mac OS, when you get hold of it in PC world it will seem a bit odd compared to a windows machine, and you'll think oh I don't like this, but it's so different to Windows and even an iPad but once you start to use it it does flow

Thanks Stuart, I do have an old iBook G4 that I use very occasionally but usure on the latest MacBooks, will see how it goes

FWIW, I'd hold out buying right now Tim. Also AppleCare is a must for the machine regardless of where you buy it from

You've got the whole of the first year to add AC on so don't feel pressured into adding it on asap (don't forget either)

The simple reason is out of warranty repair bills aren't cheap in the slightest and at least you'll have peace of mind for three years!

I'd strongly consider if you need the upgraded processor. Given the spec of the base 15" MBPR, it may be overkill to spend the extra there. Don't forget that there are many users still with older machines which are going strong.

The one good thing (though not being upgradable) is that there will be plenty of RAM for your usage.

My first few weeks on the iMac were not the easiest, it was ready to be thrown out of the window more than once I'll tell you. Now tho, I would never swap back to a PC

So when you do try a Mac book, try and keep an open mind and try not think PC - it really is that important - an as said above, it will flow !

Probably didn't explain it properly, you can extend the warranty at any point within the first year.

I've been thinking about getting a desktop pc again as having had only an iPad for the last 3-4 years I've not been able to do any proper work on it.

I would mostly be using it for photoshop design work and photo editing but i'd also like to do a bit of 3d modelling on whatever I may buy so (I assume) i would need something with a bit of grunt. Does anyone have any experience with using 3d programs on a Mac and do you have any thoughts on a suitable spec? At the moment I've been using Alias on a PC laptop at work but would like to learn Maya at some stage too.

I've now talked myself out of a pro and back to the std MacBook 256gb.

I no longer edit photos, and just try to take them better in the camera! From a storage perspective, my photos, files and music are only 60gb, so a long way to go before I fill it. And I've got a 2tb NAS and multiple 128gb sticks if required.

Laptop currently rarely booted up, mainly use an old iPad mini, but most of my web usage is forums, so like the idea of a lightweight small Mac instead of an air2 iPad as keyboard will be useful & can retire the Windows laptop for when a Mac isn't suitable, but like the uber old win2k machine for just in case emergencies :lol:

I'm only keeping a little notebook to link with the Smarttop module for the rare time a might need to change it!

After using a Mac and iPad for so long it's made me realise how slow the pc is !
