Mac v Windows

Would love a MAC PRO. but its 3.5k. Hell no.
I had an octo-core MacPro (the old alu cheese grater style) for years, and upgraded it just like a Windows PC...with the intent of swapping it for a TrashCan MacPro when they came out, but quickly realised the newer MacPros weren't that much quicker than my upgraded 6 year old Mac Pro and the promised breakout boxes to offload the work to were not exactly cheap or readily available (wasn't specifically a Mac issue though).

Ended up keeping the MacPro and supplementing it with a 21.5" iMac that I could take onto client sites to do their live Adobe/Quark work, after I realised that their idea of a graphics desktop tended to be a 'cheap' Dell Optiplex type machine, with a 15" monitor, with software that was about 3 versions out of date.

i agree completely,
i joined in because i know apple fans are so passionate, and i know nothing will ever change your minds.. so its poke a stick through the bars time again :)
and as you say pretty, and nothing thats pretty comes without a cost :) ,

I’m not sure what value the “my PC is better than your Mac” goading actually had in this thread, but so long as you’ve been kept entertained....

My main issue with Apple is that anything you put on one of their devices doesn't seem to be compatible with anything running Windows.

When Mrs Tidy and I parted the CD collection got ripped and copied onto both our Windows PCs, but had to be done a 2nd time in case she wanted to put them on her I-pod. :headbang: But maybe someone more tech savvy than me could have found a better solution.

Anyway after that I vowed I'd never want any Apple product!

And to be fair the OP should really have done his comparison using Windows 10 - it's definitely better than Windows 7!

It was purely to use as an analogy to show that an argument based on price alone, is meaningless. it could have been watches, jewellery, prostitutes, coke, etc. :P

so erm.. congrats on the psychobabble but as an ex national computer engineer..... is your apple twice as good and twice as fast - OFF THE SHELF to justify twice the price.. yes or no gents.....??
As a former Windows "partner" with a Degree in Computer Science and with a son who earns £500K plus shares per annum for the Oracle Corporation there's only one question - do either of us have a Windows computer? Erm! No!

Don't even ask why, 'cos it's pretty obvious (Mind you, I guess that you have to be able to afford it. :) )

To be fair before you get to the "afford it" question, you need to determine whether you need or want it - I don't, so cost is irrelevant!

As road warrior says, I am 'poking a stick' for my own entertainment value. This is how wars start and it's great to be in at the beginning. By the way, are you allowed to say prostitutes these days? Should it not be Social workers, sorry, Sex workers. And if you mention Coke, shouldn't you mention Pepsi. :poke:

His business model is brilliant - slate the product that is his bread and butter.

Interesting there seems to be little love for linux here though...

Linux is brilliant, this forum runs on CentOS! Pretty crap desktop operating system though, unless you live your life in text editors and terminal windows.

i think most people know android is linux in a suit and yes linux is wonderful, but as its open source, it will never get commercial like windows or apple, but its doing very nicely as android and is giving both windows and apple a bloody nose :D

CUPERTINO, California — November 1, 2018 — Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2018 fourth quarter ended September 29, 2018. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $62.9 billion, an increase of 20 percent from the year-ago quarter, and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $2.91, up 41 percent. International sales accounted for 61 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Some bloody nose!

I’ve had a few high end Windows laptops (Sony or IBM carbon/magnesium jobbies) and used to build the odd desktop. For years, DIY Windows boxes for gaming (and most other “power consumer” use cases) represented far better value for money than buying an off-the-shelf Mac. The notable exception being photography and media production, for which the software ecosystem and general level of investment in things like display calibration etc made Apple’s platform more desirable.

Now I prefer Mac. I like the industrial design and the ergonomics, and I usually work on remote *nix systems, so being to run so many things locally in a production-like way is great.

I’ve also always thought that MacBooks continue to support productivity as they grow older far better than an equivalently spec’d Windows laptop. Managing power modes, local UI responsiveness and feedback, and application state are all things that Apple invest heavily in and they can generally achieve a very high level of optimisation due to their fixed hardware platforms. If you’ve ever done performance engineering across thousands of platform permutations you will know what I am talking about. I also prefer the underlying o/s security architecture of *nix based systems, although Microsoft have done a lot of catching up in the past few years.

It’s a similar story with the iPhone/iOS, but perversely, I would go back to a decent Android phone in an instant! Probably because you feel a bit “closer to the metal” than with an iPhone. It just goes to show how personal and/or circumstantial these things are. Have an iPad too. Love it, wouldn't touch an Android tablet...

Apple make money not because more use them but because they charge insane prices and people pay up., whilst android and Linux is free. Do you seriously think apple don't wish android and Linux don't exist? 86 % use android - yes thats a bloody nose. :poke:
