Mac v Windows

Ive just had to look for some old / redundant files on an old Samsung Netbook which is running Windows 7

I can't believe how slow it is compared with my iMac - Ive forgotten how to drive it as well!

I like Macs, and have 3 desktops, and all are dual-boot with Mojave and Windows 10 via Bootcamp.

In every case, on the same hardware (various generations of Mac Pro and iMacs from 2008. 2012 and 2016, but all with SSDs and at least 16gb RAM), the same software on the Mac side is slower than on W10.
  • Office 365 is 2-3 times slower in Mojave vs W10
  • Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign is half as fast in Mojave vs W10
  • Quark Xpress is better looking on Mojave, but a bit slower
  • Games (that are available on both platforms) run at about 50% of the FPS on the Mac
I now only use the Mac versions of the apps to guarantee 100% compatibility with the client's operating system.

I realise it’s not really a fair comparison but i found it difficult to remember the basics of the Windows system.

I’ve only retained the machine for the possibility that I might need to change a setting on the Smarttop module.

Smart top supports Mac now.

As a Mac-user, the problem I have with the hardware is that they ship their machines with such pitifully slow hard drives - I put an SSD in my 2012 Mac Mini and it absolutely flies now, but the HDD that came out was a 4200rpm one. Why on earth would they do that?? I like Macs a lot, and I like MacOS a lot (partly for the Unix underpinnings) but things like that just let them down in my opinion..

The slower ones use less power, and it also forces buyers to upgrage their order to something useable. So a plodding £999 entry-level iMac becomes a useable £2000 iMac once you add the obligatory extra RAM, better GPU, higher-spec processor and either Fusion or SSD.

But at least Apple can keep claiming to be selling a sub-£1000 iMac.

I just buy mine from the refurb store with the spec I want, and then add more memory myself for about a 3rd of what Apple charge.

Unfortunately my latest intended purchase has been kiboshed as the RAM is not user-replaceable (without taking the machine apart and voiding your warranty).

Yes - annoying isn’t it!

I’m a big fan of the reburb store too :)

Thanks for the heads up!
Unfortunately the windows notebook is the only portable machine I’ve got. I don’t think the iPad would work.

I suppose if push comes to shove I could always use Mrs K’s Mac book?

so erm.. congrats on the psychobabble but as an ex national computer engineer..... is your apple twice as good and twice as fast - OFF THE SHELF to justify twice the price.. yes or no gents.....??

remember.. the worlds fastest graphics cards are not made by apple, the worlds fastest boards are not made by apple, the worlds best monitors are not made by apple, the fastest chip in the world isnt an apple ,and the worlds fastest operating system is not made by apple. so what ya got gents ??
for windows - its upgradable flexable better faster cheaper
for apple. but its pretty..

but check yourself..

Is a BMW twice as fast as a Fords for twice the price?
No they're not, but I'm sure you're going to say that the materials/quality is better...same in the Mac world.

I need both Mac & Windows (and I accept I might be an outlier), so please feel free to build me a Windows PC that will do the job of my current machine (which cost £1800 from the Apple Refurb store):
  • All-In-One
  • 27" 5K monitor
  • 512GB Blade SSD
  • 32gb RAM
  • 3.8ghz i5
  • Radeon Pro 580 8GB
  • 2 x Thunderbolt/USB 3 ports
  • 4 x USB3 ports
  • Runs MacOS
  • Runs Windows
  • Aluminium chassis & case

I'm not going to comment on reliability of the operating systems as I'd have the same Windows experience whether I was running it on a Mac or a PC.

My work machine (client supplied) is a £1800 HP Z-book workstation laptop (17" i7-6700 with 32gb RAM and Quadro 2000), but despite the spec, it's slower than my iMac 5k (running Windows).

You can't say one is better than the other. They both have different purposes somewhat.

The first lines of the article you link to are “Those Mac computers sure look good — and they work great too.” I’ve used Mac computers for 19 years and the guy is right they look good and work great. As for price they are not cheap but they are reliable and they last. My MacBook dates from 2009 and looks and works just as well as the day I purchased it. I have an iPhone 8 and 6, an iMac which I use mainly for photo editing and 2 iPads. They have never gone wrong. If you can afford the best why settle for less!

If you are happy with Microsoft and Windows then I’m happy for you. We are all entitled to our own opinion.

dont want to break your heart but i could build better than that for around 1000 ish - the weak point in any laptop is its fixed graphic and processor - laqtops will never beat a case 32 meg of ram is wasted - nothing will ever use that much

I know this is a bit of a windup (and I use Windows more than MacOS), but most of those 'reasons' can work for & against PCs, e.g.:

1. You can get a Windows PC for much cheaper than a Mac.
  • or, you can buy a Windows PC so cheaply that you can afford to throw it away and replace it rather than repair it when it slows to a crawl

2. There are far more Windows PC options to choose from
  • There are so many manufacturers building Windows PCs that you don't really know what quality of components you're going to get, until it's too late

3. You can easily switch out parts in Windows PCs and most laptops to customize them for your needs — and give them extra life.
  • Completely agree - but your Mac can be traded in/sold for a higher value than a used PC as they hold their value longer

4. If you want to play video games, Windows PCs are the best option, by far.
  • Completely agree - if all you want to do is play games, but I can do that by running Windows on the Mac via Bootcamp

5. Most Windows laptops still come with commonly used ports.
  • Because no PC maker (other than Apple) seems to want to take the risk on bringing in newer/faster interface technologies

6. Windows PCs are updated with new specs much more frequently.
  • Windows PC box-pushers have to rely on volume of sales against loads of other PC to make their small profits, niche manufacturers don't

7. Microsoft's Office Suite — the most popular productivity software — works better on Windows than it does on Macs.
  • You can't blame Apple for that, blame Microsoft - it's been getting steadily worse on Mac since Office 95.

8. The Windows operating system is more customizable and allows for more extensive fine tuning than macOS.
  • or, Windows has lots of hidden customisations that you'll need to find and turn off to avoid letting Microsoft/laptop manufacturer collecting personal info; and every piece of hardware seems to have 1000 different versions which makes troubleshooting 'tricky'

9. While it's easier overall to get a Mac repaired, it can be a lot cheaper to get a Windows PC repaired.
  • But, less likely for the Mac to need to be repaired in the first place - jut look a the reliability indices - and you're more likely for Apple to fix your machine for free, without having to go to PC World, or find out the returns process of your little one-man-band PC-builder

10. Windows laptops have more reliable keyboards than Apple's latest MacBook Pros.
  • Can't disagree with that, from what I've read, but I've never used a Mac laptop

i have no idea about the tech behind it...

tried windows
tried mac..

prefer mac.

the end.

Would love a MAC PRO. but its 3.5k. Hell no.
