The slower ones use less power, and it also forces buyers to upgrage their order to something useable. So a plodding £999 entry-level iMac becomes a useable £2000 iMac once you add the obligatory extra RAM, better GPU, higher-spec processor and either Fusion or SSD.djstan said:As a Mac-user, the problem I have with the hardware is that they ship their machines with such pitifully slow hard drives - I put an SSD in my 2012 Mac Mini and it absolutely flies now, but the HDD that came out was a 4200rpm one. Why on earth would they do that?? I like Macs a lot, and I like MacOS a lot (partly for the Unix underpinnings) but things like that just let them down in my opinion..

But at least Apple can keep claiming to be selling a sub-£1000 iMac.
I just buy mine from the refurb store with the spec I want, and then add more memory myself for about a 3rd of what Apple charge.
Unfortunately my latest intended purchase has been kiboshed as the RAM is not user-replaceable (without taking the machine apart and voiding your warranty).

No they're not, but I'm sure you're going to say that the materials/quality is better...same in the Mac world.
I need both Mac & Windows (and I accept I might be an outlier), so please feel free to build me a Windows PC that will do the job of my current machine (which cost £1800 from the Apple Refurb store):
- All-In-One
- 27" 5K monitor
- 512GB Blade SSD
- 32gb RAM
- 3.8ghz i5
- Radeon Pro 580 8GB
- 2 x Thunderbolt/USB 3 ports
- 4 x USB3 ports
- Runs MacOS
- Runs Windows
- Aluminium chassis & case
I'm not going to comment on reliability of the operating systems as I'd have the same Windows experience whether I was running it on a Mac or a PC.
My work machine (client supplied) is a £1800 HP Z-book workstation laptop (17" i7-6700 with 32gb RAM and Quadro 2000), but despite the spec, it's slower than my iMac 5k (running Windows).
i agree completely,Tinker15 said:road warrior said:so erm.. congrats on the psychobabble but as an ex national computer engineer..... is your apple twice as good and twice as fast - OFF THE SHELF to justify twice the price.. yes or no gents.....??

The first lines of the article you link to are “Those Mac computers sure look good — and they work great too.” I’ve used Mac computers for 19 years and the guy is right they look good and work great. As for price they are not cheap but they are reliable and they last. My MacBook dates from 2009 and looks and works just as well as the day I purchased it. I have an iPhone 8 and 6, an iMac which I use mainly for photo editing and 2 iPads. They have never gone wrong. If you can afford the best why settle for less!
If you are happy with Microsoft and Windows then I’m happy for you. We are all entitled to our own opinion.

I know this is a bit of a windup (and I use Windows more than MacOS), but most of those 'reasons' can work for & against PCs, e.g.:Tinker15 said:The first lines of the article you link to are “Those Mac computers sure look good — and they work great too.”
