I've just phone the Apple shop and made an appointment with them to go in and do a final spec and order.

Are there any must have or must not haves I should know about?
If it was a PC there wouldn't be a problem but a Mac - Its all very new to me :D

Macbook, iMac, or MacPro?

I'm saving up for a new hexa-core Mac Pro for a Christmas present to myself.

I would recommend that you max out on RAM (unless you've opted for the 27" iMac)
It's hard wired onto the new mac motherboards so you cannot simply add more later if you haven't got enough.

Then get a pair of shin pads as you'll be kicking yourself for not having bought one years ago

iMac - its a Quad core i5 3.2Ghz -8Gb and 1Tb
Its a 27" monitor
I'm ordering an Apple trackpad - its all new to me!

Yeah
That's a reasonable base specification :)
You will not be disappointed

Good choice opting for the trackpad over mouse!

I would echo what Titan has said and opt for more ram. Given you can swap that yourself you'll have fewer problems future proofing the computer.

Oh and if you know anyone in full time higher education, you can save yourself up to 15% depending on their education institution's agreement with Apple.

+1 - that's the only thing in particular I'd recommend, now it's hard wired in, maxing the ram will probably extend the life of the machine significantly; which even at apple prices, will be good value.

Thanks, its a big step into the unknown for me!

It has to be quicker than my old Vaio laptop :D

8GB ram may be enough but my experience with Mavericks would suggest otherwise - especially with the conventional HDD. However with the 27" screens a RAM upgrade is still only a 5 min DIY job.

Welcome to the superior race.

Posted from my Retina macbook pro

Agree on the RAM comments to a point, but some of it is so over priced I couldn't face it.

Off the shelf will be ok. But if you want to add 8GB check the shop price knowing you can do if later if you want to wait.

I think I'm pushing my luck with the total package I've ordered!

As I am a mac virgin I have also gone for a one year tuition.

Brought the same one just before Christmas opted for the 16GB of ram and that was it.

First desktop machine I've had for a long time, love it

I've also spec'd Microsoft Office as I have tried 'Pages' on my wife's iPad and am not that keen. :(

What I have noticed on these posts is that nobody has been negative about Macs or suggested not to buy!

Good luck with the Mac and their are quite a few Mac user on here if you need any help...

None of the apps work particularly well on tablets
Having used Mickysoft for 20years I opted for iWorks just to try it ( i believe it is now bundled free with all Macs?)
I much prefer Numbers and Pages to Excel & Word but it is a very subjective area.
If you have lots of existing Microsoft Office documents that's OK
If you don't I would see how you get on with iWorks before adding Office.
Each have their advantages and disadvantages, and proponents/opponents.
If you need any help, give me a shout - I still have an outstanding fuel pump waiting for me at Coopers
